He Could Do It In Oakland
He is a controversial figure, to say the least. Amidst numerous steroid allegations, a "Book of Shadows", and Babe Ruth's Home Run Record, is Barry Bonds. The saga continued Saturday, as Barry went 0-2 with 2 base on balls. A record almost as big as this mans forehead has ellipsed the baseball world. Felipe Alou says that Barry will sit tomorrow's game in Houston, and then play the last two games of the series. Most likely, Barry will come to Oakland on Friday and DH all three games. Also very likely, Barry comes to Oakland stuck one home run shy of The Babe Himself. Could you imagine Mr. Bonds breaking the record in our McAfee Stadium? A packed house of Bonds haters: There couldn't be a better scenario. I, as most of you, do not want him to break the record at all; however, I would enjoy booing the shit out of the most hated man in sport. Would it be a negative or a positive to see him break the record in Oakland? There is definitely a huge point counterpoint to this argument. Fellow ANers, to Bonds, or not to Bonds? It definitely would be a story to tell the grandkids...

If Bonds is smart
Personally, I would like him to get it over with in Houston so that Giants don't feel compelled to make the trip across the bay on the hopes of seeing him break the record and take up precious seats that could otherwise be filled with A's fans, but that is probably wishfull thinking. Oh well.

He is part of Sports History
This is the little detail that is leading to my personal conflict on the matter. I don't like Bonds, I don't like the Giants all that much. But I have spent the last week watching Giants games because I want to see it. I want to watch it live as it happens, because I know what it means. It is bigger than the steriods issue. It is bigger than many of us have seen in our time. In 20 or 30 years when someone else is about to pass Bonds, or the Babe, or Aaron, someone in our life is going to ask us what it was like when Bonds passed the Babe. And as much as I will want to tell them about the Steriods and about "Bonds on Bonds" and all that, what I will most like to tell them about is the moment, the exact moment when that ball went over the fence.
Because of all this, I would love to be present at the actual game when it happens. I will be one of those fools who takes a picture of every pitch. It would be an amazing thing to be there when he does it. The problem is, as much as I want to be there when it happens, I don't want it to be off A's pitching. My dad said, "Well, that is one way to get into the hall of fame!" And I got this scary picture in my head of Danny and the look on his face as the ball went out. And don't even get me started on the media field day that will be had if this is the actual course of events! I could start a whole diary on my issues with Bay Area Sports media right now, but I won't.
So this is where my issue lies. I want to see it happen, I just don't want to see it happen off A's pitching. We can sit here and say we don't want him to pass 714 till we are blue in the face, but the reality is, it is going to happen, it will forever be part of baseball history, we might as well enjoy it and know that it is something that happens once in a generation and we will be lucky to see something so historic again.
