Ted Lilly wants to come back

According to the SF Chronicle, Lilly wants to come back to the Bay Area because his wife is in grad school at UC Davis and, well, he likes it here.  Says he's looking at the Giants and the A's...Giants are more probable, but who knows what happens?  Anyways, here's linkage:

(Also, thanks to mlbtraderumors.com for the tip).

Thoughts?  Possibly a good replacement for Zito in the rotation?  Just a thought.

I could see the Giants signing him.
A solid lefty like Lilly actually WANTING to go the Giants?

...Actually, that's why they won't sign him. They'll wait for another ten years.

The Giants would be dumb, IMHO, not to pick him up if the price is right in the offseason. Though that's the question, given the cost of lefty pitchers.

I said it in the other thread, and I'll say it here. Leave Loaiza in a cardboard box on the street like an ugly runt kitten and bring back Ted!

Plus, if he really IS a packaged deal with Zito, that'd help. ;-)

I was really sad when we traded Lilly, especially given how he made several comments at the end of the season about how determined he was to pitch even better the next season, and how he was looking forward to being a part of the Oakland A's again and how optimistic he was about the team. :-( Plus, he always looks like someone shot his puppy. Just plain lovable.

"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

And let us not forget
his performance in Boston one particular year, when a particular team managed to lose with particularly baffling running errors, despite Lilly's centered, focused pitching.

After that game, I hated the A's (for about a few hours) but I came away with a very hearty respect for Lilly, whatever problems he had shown in the past.

red sox
that's the very day that i lost all respect for the red sox (players, that is).  i had long not liked the fans, long not liked the front office guys, but that's when i lost it for the players.  standing on the top step of the dugout w/ "LILLY" taped to their warmups...as unclassy as can be.  and leave it to fox to think it funny.

but that was a painful game.  though i was 2000 miles away, i really felt like i was there.  it was intense--even to watch.

let's also remember that lilly carried that rotation in 2003 after mulder got hurt in august (ironically, in boston).

but he might be too expensive to have in oakland, unless zito goes, and if i had my choice, zito stays.  but billy has never called me asking for my opinion.

before you insult someone, walk a mile in their shoes. that way, you'll be a mile away from them, and you'll have their shoes.

Eeeew. Yes.
I thought that was pretty slimy on the part of the players. Or, very high school, immature type stuff. Made Ted look all the better for being able to concentrate on great pitching with tens of thousands of people chanting his name.

Personally, when I'm at work I find the tens of thousands of people screaming my name to be distracting, but then that could be because the cubicle gets so crowded....

I still don't understand why ...
... those jackasses didn't get fines, if not suspensions, for that stunt. That's the single most unprofessional (not "worst," just "most unprofessional") thing I've ever seen on a baseball field.

I would throw in a Milo ...
Just go get that deal to go through... hell, I'd send him Vasili Spanos + a 6pk of LeBatts along just to dump Lose-iza.

Also within that notebook
Haven't checked the linkdump, but it says that Jason Windsor has been promoted to AAA.

About Lilly. He might be a good replacement next year for Zito (providing Meyer can't do it). Also, if we could trade Loaiza, adding another lefty would be nice.

At this rate, we'll need him this year...

Do you know when Windsor will be
making his first start?

No team
in their right mind would trade for Loiza. He's worst than washed up seaweed.

So.. the Giants, then?

Considering Lilly's Rap Sheet Against the Red Sox
The Yankees might take that special offer

"Lilly's former teammate, Barry Zito, also will be a free agent and Lilly said the two have joked that they might go somewhere as a package deal, a special two-fer deal on left-handers."

But of course, no facial hair has to be included, and apparently, you can't play poker either.

Funny
I thought I remember a lot of people complaining about Lilly a lot when he donned the green and gold.  Do I remember that accurately?

The gold is always greener...
"The first night, we were right there," Bradley said. "All we needed was a couple of touchdowns, and we would have had them."

There was hate.
But it all seemed to melt away once Mulder went down and UberTed came out. I mean, the guy went out on a hell of a high note, it's fair for people to feel Lilly-love after that.

Personally, I liked Lilly a lot (though I had an eerie loathing creep upon me for most of May '03 and a couple nights in June) but my taste in players has never had much to do with their on-the-field performance.

Windsor
Anyone know whose spot he is taking in the River Cats' rotation? Is someone being promoted to Oakland or demoted to relief, Midland, the waiver wire?

If platoon OF's
Weren't a need the A's would have a solid #3 with Lilly right now but meh I'm not the GM, you do what's best for the team.

Trouble is,
the A's let Lilly go not only because he was about to get more expensive but also because they got his younger, "on the rise" years. Now, maybe they could afford him again (if it weren't for Loaiza), but he is probably a guy you would be paying more for past performance than for future performance. Not the type of guy the A's tend to sign (except for Loaiza. Grrrr...).

given Beane's track record ...
... I'd be wary of any FA he signed.
