Four Biggest Surprises So Far This Year.

Two quick points.

  1. Frank Thomas may not be hitting well, but he's sure helping the team. Swisher gave Frank credit for helping him with his swing, and there is no doubt that his presence is giving Chavy the protection he needs to truly thrive.
  2. Loaiza may need Kendall's help. Maybe Melhuse should switch to Zito, who can use a change of pace.
But now for the main point of this post: What do you think has been the four biggest surprises so far this year?

Here are my picks:

  1. Frank Thomas is on pace to hit over 35 homers, yet has a batting average under .200 and an OBP of less that .270.
  2. Swisher is on pace to break the Roger Maris steroid free home run record, and Chavy is right behind him.
  3. Ellis has an OPS  of less than .500.
  4. Kennedy has been outstanding, and if he continues like this will get us another pair of draft picks to go with the pair Zito will be getting us.
If anyone has a different top 4, I'd love to hear it.

For me, it's probably
  1. Swisher's level of success
  2. Kendall's throwing
  3. Loaiza not even eating up innings
  4. DJ surpassing Two-buck Chuck's season opening futility
Honorable mention: Kennedy maintaining his 0.00 ERA so long, Street being so wobbly, Crosby only missing half the games so far (wow, way to go Iron Man Bobby!).

the two biggest surprises
  1. .305 team obp and .225 avg as of yesterday
  2. the eras of 2/3 of the pitchers (harden, witasick, haren, saarloos, blanton, street, zito, and loaiza).

My surprise
Swisher's growth and maturation as a hitter.  It seems that he has grown out of the free-swinger phase of his life.,

Hmmmm...
  1.  Tie - The Cincinnati Reds and The Colorado Rockies
  2.  The Giants tied for 1st Place this late in the season
  3.  Only 1 team below .500 in the NL Central
  4.  Only 1 team above .500 in the AL West
Oh, you meant A's surprises....
  1.  Joe Kennedy
  2.  Nick Swisher
  3.  Kendall not being in the 9th spot
  4.  Macha not being fired
The rocky starting pitching gets honorable mention.  As does the bottom-dwelling offense.  But, I expect those to turn around.  Slow starts by Ellis and DJ are disappointing, but not all that surprising.  They will come around, too.  Not surprised at all by Kendall, or Frank (I expected him to play almost every day), or Barry (he is what he is).

My list includes...
Everything already mentioned plus the addition of Halsey to the pen with his 1.42 ERA; 2/5 BB/K; 0 HRs;12.2 IP. Trade working out for us so far.

Quick check of the stats shows Juan Cruz has 3.00 ERA; BB/K Rate 10/14; 2 HRs allowed; 12 IP that is better than he gave us.

biggest surprise for me
Macha's outstanding strategic personnel management and (2 or 3 glaring exceptions aside) tactical in-game choices.

Followed closely by the suckitude of the rotation and FT's health/durability.

For me, I think it has to be
  1. The excellence of Macha's in-game managing.
  2. The ineptitude of Macha's in-game managing.
  3. How unremarkable Macha's in-game managing has been.
  4. The contradictions, and lack thereof.
