I didn't hear. Did Bonds hit a homer yet?

It's just insane how much attention the media is paying to this "story". I don't have tv, but I was over at a friend's place last night watching ESPN NEWS, hoping to catch Swisher's grand salami. Over the course of a couple hours, they played the same loop of stories a number of times. No Swish, but I must have seen Bonds' homer 15 times in that span. What a joke. TV sucks. ESPN moreso.

The only history being played out is that...
..a drug cheat is being allowed to continue to play.

Oh, and that he can only hit dingers in Colorado now.

Don't you miss the days of martinis and greenies?

Anybody know how many homers
were hit by Josh Gibson, the great Negro Leagues slugger?

by OaklandSi on Apr 23, 2006 10:14 AM PDT reply actions

Just looked it up
Historian John Coates credits Gibson with 823 home runs in 22 years, including the pro winter leagues.

http://my.execpc.com/~sshivers/gibson.html

He died at the age of 35, of complications resulting from a brain tumor.

That math ain't right
If he bagan playing semi-pro in 1927 and died in January, 1947 there is no way he played 22 years. I don't know how many HRs Gibson actually hit, but I wouldn't trust any historian who bungles his facts this bad.

not saying I believe this guy or not
his was the first report I found on the total homers hit by Gibson.

Here's another account:
http://espn.go.com/sportscentury/features/00016050.html

"In various publications, the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder has been credited with as many as 84 homers in one season. His Hall of Fame plaque says he hit "almost 800" homers in his 17-year career. His lifetime batting average was higher than .350, with one book putting it at .384, best in Negro League history."

and ThinkQuest has him hitting
over 900 homers in 17 years. Clearly there are lots of legends about him. But I think it's safe to say that he probably hit at least as many homers in his career (including winter league ball) as did Hank Aaron in the majors.

Safe to say
But you'd think there'd an accurate account to how long he played, and in particular when he started to play professionally.

Eh.

Guarantee you he was a better hitter than our current backstop.

...and, if it helps...
...a clip of Swish's slam is now up on the Top Plays page...

I hope they're not finished loading yesterday's highlights to that page -- there were quite a few great defensive plays that belong there, too...  :\
