Hate-ability

I'm going to attempt to access the current "Hate-Ability" some Franchises. If someone says they hate the Yankees, their reasoning is that they go out and "buy championships". So to be as hate-able as the Yankees you must a)spend alot of money on FA and b)not draft your own talent. To be likeable you must a)draft your own talent and b)keep your talent for a long time. So here you go. Also players with bad reps would make a team hate-able.

Massively rich players (9mil+/yr)
Bos:5
Atl: 4
NYY: 10
OAK: 2
Sea:3

LAA:4 TEX:1 Bad reps:
Oak:Payton,Loaiza,Bradley
BOS:Manny, Schilling,Wells, Foulke
Atl: no one...anyone...Bueller?
NYY: Jeter, Sheffield, Arod, Giambi
Sea:Carl Everett, Matt Lawton

LAA:Colon,Erstad,Scoscia, K-Rod Tex:Frank Francisco Self drafted players
Bos:4
Atl:10
NYY:6
OAK:9
SEA:10

LAA:8 Tex:5 Tenured players (5+with the MLB club)
BOS:4
Atl:4
NYY:5
OAK:2
SEA:6

LAA:6 TEX:3 So adding one point for each rich guy and each asshole and subtracting one point for each homegrown or long time player these are the "Hate-Ability" scores:

Boston Red Sox:1
New York Yankees:3
Atlanta Braves: -10
Oakland A's: -6
Seattle Mariners:-11

Texas Rangers:-6 LA Angels of ANA:-6 What do you guys think? By the way this is in no way completely serious, just amusing.
Update [2006-4-23 10:31:29 by pbruins92]:Added Rangers and Angels to rankings. Angels are low, so my theory is obviously flawed

Maybe you could normalize
with respect to the Yankees on one end, and 0 on the other, to calculate a Hate %.

You could also track down events that made a team more or less hateable (Yankees acquire A-Rod..oh, wait, they hold steady at 100%), and calculate the BabyHateExp for each of these events.

I can't remember what I was going to say, but I assure you, it was brilliant!

Jeter has a bad rep?
I would switch him with Randy Johnson.

Interesting study, though. I hate the Red Sox largely because of their fans. Is there any way to assess the obnoxiousness of a fanbase?

Jeter
doesn't have a bad rap per se....just alot of people hate him.

Wells
I'd also add David Wells for the BoSox

where do the angels rank on this scale?
I can't believe you left them out.
I miss Bill King :(

Can we see some
VOCB stats to solidify the rankings? Thanks.

Anybody see Senor Smoke drill Omar Vizquel tonight?  Beautiful...stemming from Vizquel's book. Notice how the Giants weren't exactly backing him up?

I saw it.
Vizquel sure kept a calm head. gotta admire that considering how close the game was.

Well, he kind of had it coming,
in the sense of the ballplayer code of taking things off the field/clubhouse and into a book. I'm not so sure he would want to take on Mesa man to man. He took his medicine and went to first without even glancing at the mound. Retaliation could come tomorrow I guess but this is an Indians thing, nothing to do with the Rocks or Giants.

I think retaliation will come...
but it might be in a later series. Depending on the score and situation. Too bad that Some Rockie team mate will take the pain instead of that wild eyed Mesa.

Angels hateability
It comes not from lack of home-grown products and high priced superstars, but more of a personal misery. I.E. Watching them celebrate a playoff berth on our home turf the last two years.

Plus the fanbase
When >75% (my estimation) of your fanbase has sprung up in the last 5 years, due to a combination of Arte Moreno and the rally monkey, your team's hate-ability has to shoot up.

I grew up in southern California during the 80's and 90's, and Angels fans were simply non-existent then.

I think I should add
a new catoragory:Mischilianeus Hatred.

Covers anything. Rally Monkeys, Steinbrenner, Ted Turner...

you're right
being an angel fan in the late '80s/early '90s was a lonely existence. but i'm cool with all the bandwagoners, simply because you can't eventually have a strong, knowledgeable fan base IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY FANS TO BEGIN WITH. there's nothing more depressing than going to a game in which you can shout across the stadium to someone, and they can hear you.

welcome, angel-fan bandwagoners -- now shut up and watch the game.

The Braves have Huddy and Smoltz.
THAT is high on the lovable scale. :-)
