roy steele

does anyone know the status of roy steele?  I live on the East Coast and can only hear home games via the MLB pkg. and havent heard his voice in a long time.  I know it was previously discussed that he was ailing, but was expected to return, but I heard his stand-in today against anaheim.  This guys voice takes me way back and losing him and Bill in the same year would be tough.  I know everyone on here is a brilliant A's fan, so I just wanted to get caught up.  Any updates would be greatly appreciated, as I have not heard a home game live in way too long.  thanks.

there's very little news
and the little there is isn't encouraging.

He is reportedly suffering from an undisclosed throat ailment (since late last season). There is no timetable as to his possible return.

He really is a "true treasure".
Thank You for posting the link, Brodie.

the "voice of God" is missed dearly
along with Holy Toledo.  Hopefully his throat ailment clears up, but I believe he is a chronic smoker.

The A's are so secretive
about injuries, they won't even tell us what's up with the public address announcer. Sigh. Hope he's ok, but my instincts say otherwise. Out too long, info too hidden, not a good sign.

Nico, your instincts on Roy in March were wrong
http://www.athleticsnation.com/story/2006/3/4/214745/8547

You took me out to the toolshed for suggesting Roy was sick and asking AN to do something nice for him.  He's so good at what he does.  Hearing him announce Eric Chavez is one of my favorite things about being an A's fan.  No, I don't need to hear a 12 year old trust fund kid announcing my players.  How bout some investigative journalism on this Bles, Nico, Brodie??

eshock, all I said
in that thread was that the original title didn't match the content of the article referenced. I didn't have any instincts one way or the other about Roy's health because I didn't--and still don't--know what's wrong (though if I'm a betting man, I'll put my money on throat cancer, unfortunately). I love Roy Steele too, by the way. Being without Bill King and Roy Steele is disconcerting.

You just don't piss off the collective
Admit you were wrong and live with it.  How do ever expect to get an invitation to the Tofu-fest at Chez Nico?

He's been announcing since 1968, hasn't he?
Did he ever do Raider or Warrior games at the Coliseum?

How about "Days On The Green"? (Can you just imagine him announcing The Rolling Stones?)

But I think we better be ready for another tribute.

Since Day 1...
He's been the only PA announcer the A's have ever had in Oakland.  He started with the very first game in '68.

It was hard enough losing Bill; I don't know how I'd handle losing Roy as well.
