This may have been discussed already, but what is the point of DHing JP when you can put him in left and have Swish play 1st and DH Johnson? Isn't the current set up less defensively sound?

NICE inning by Haren
Didn't realize he was only at 75 pitches. You know, 4 times in the last week or so (Harden twice, Zito, Haren today), Macha has been vindicated for his decision to stay with a starter for at least another inning. And that's not even counting Haren settling down after Batista's HR in Minnesota.

Just a note:
This game, increasingly, looks like it will be decided in part by Scot Shields vs. the A's. (I wouldn't be surprised if he's asked to get as many as 6 outs.) Shields is arguably the best set-up man in the AL; he has also had a history of implosions in this stadium. Stay tuned...

This is so depressing and frustrating.
I want to jump through the screen and throttle the Angels bullpen. And then go take a cozy seat in the second deck.

Come on, Frank Thomas. Let us live the dream.

This is painful.

Well, who would've thought we'd be in it?
That was a sub-par outing by Danny by most accounts, despite settling down in the end. 5 runs is tough to make up against the Angels, especially with that solid bullpen.

by nycfan @ Athletics Nation on Apr 22, 2006 3:41 PM PDT reply actions

Seriously guys.
Our offense...is NOWHERE near how i thought it could be this year. Neither is our pitching. Our team is not that good. I doubt we win the west. I doubt we even get 2nd place. We can't win 2 games in a row. Sorry, but our team sorta sucks.

Rodriguez
is very good.  He's especially effective when he is able to throw a 96 mph fastball on the outside of the plate.

What are you going to do?  That's the Angels bullpen.  You can't let the game get decided by those guys (Shields, K-Rod).  You lose almost every time.  It's memorable when the A's pull out a win (Hatteberg's hit, the Sulk-off).

by bear88 on Apr 22, 2006 3:43 PM PDT reply actions

For starters
Your SP can't give up 5 runs.

And it would have been nice if the line-up had treated Jeff Weaver like he was, you know, Jeff Weaver.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

by grover on Apr 22, 2006 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

weaver pitched well
his best outing so far. he made one horrible pitch, and he paid for that. but other than that he looked like he had good control and was cruising.

by yeswecan @ Athletics Nation on Apr 22, 2006 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I just get tired
of watching RH SP get shelled by everyone but my A's.

I actually like the Weaver pick-up for the Angels, I'd rather have him than Loaiza.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

by grover on Apr 22, 2006 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

he's been less-than-dominant
even though he's done well (i.e., he's blown one save in his last 25 or something), he's struggled alot in games, which is why angel fans start sweating when he comes into games with less than a 3-run lead. but he pitched really well today, so for us that's very encouraging.

by yeswecan @ Athletics Nation on Apr 22, 2006 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

On the bright side
I already have more confidence in Halsey coming in than Rincon.

Not a good start by Danny today unfortunately. It's tough to keep fighting back when you're SP puts you in a hole and the team isn't really clicking offensively.

by nycfan @ Athletics Nation on Apr 22, 2006 3:46 PM PDT reply actions

Swish's heroics gave the A's some hope
but the fact is -- as has been pointed out -- if you spot the Angels a lead and they can line up their best BP arms for the last three innings, most likely the Angels will win that game.

by OaklandSi on Apr 22, 2006 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Best shot was in the 7th,
against Donnelly. Once you're into Shields-KRod territory, the odds plummet. Hopefully, "Northern Loaiza" (aka Loaiza) will put it together tomorrow. We should have Duke, Calero, and Kennedy fresh for up to 4 innings as needed. Good game to "go for it" if the window of opportunity presents itself.

by Nico on Apr 22, 2006 3:53 PM PDT reply actions

it confuses me that
Thomas was rested today but still is on the bench and can pinch hit in the 9th. Is DH that difficult?
I have zero confidence in Payton, didn't want him on the team, and the more at bats he gets the less I like him.  When he first came over last year, he had a nice little run, but after Sept. he did nothing, just like DJ, it occurs to me that the league has found their weaknesses and they are no longer effective.
The simple fact is that neither one has hit the ball hard all spring.   DJ is worthless if he has no power, 3 bloop singles is of no value for a first baseman.  As strange as it seems I think we would be better off with Swisher at first and Kielty in left.
Ellis has to be moved out of the lead off spot for awhile at least.  He looks awful at the plate.

Re: Thomas sitting
Well, I guess you use the following logic that Frank was 5-23 career against Weaver, Payton owned Weaver, and Frank had played 8 straight games, plus this was a day game after a night game. As I have professed in my other posts, I am a monster Frank fan, and even I understood him sitting today.

by compy75 on Apr 22, 2006 6:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel sorry...
...for Johnson and even though he had 3 hits today, he looked really bad on the last at bat.
He needs, IMO, to return to AAA (instead of running Kielty back and forth). Johnson has to think they found a BIG hole in his strike zone - and it looks like they have. Also, I don't understand the Crosby PR move. Not easy to score from first to the plate on a double, even if you are running on the count, but there had to be someone on the bench faster than Crosby. Finally, it's time for Loaiza to show up to play

by doubleplayer on Apr 22, 2006 9:03 PM PDT reply actions

I thought pinch running Crosby
was a great move. He's fast, he can't do anything else right now, and it allowed Perez, Melhuse, etc. to remain available. A free use of a roster spot that otherwise was useless.

by Nico on Apr 22, 2006 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Excellent point
Melhuse was going to come in for Kendall (as Thomas had just pinch hit for him).
A's branded at birth.

by ColiseumIsMyHome on Apr 23, 2006 2:15 AM PDT up reply actions

You could...
...be right, but much depends on the kind of injury Crosby has. Sliding (to break up a double play, for example) may not be the best cure for whatever is bothering him now. As for the 'free use of a roster player', I think this situation might have a solution in the bullpen. Can't any of those guys run with reasonable speed? If not, get them going. It will at least keep them in better shape.
