Street injured

Sigh.

By JANIE McCAULEY
 AP Sports Writer

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Huston Street has a slight muscle strain on the right side of his chest that will keep the Oakland closer out of action at least through Friday.

The reigning AL Rookie of the Year felt tightness beneath the armpit area of his throwing arm on the third-to-last pitch he threw during his save for the Athletics on Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers, the fourth outing in five days for the right-hander.

The A's are taking no chances that this could become serious, though Street said he is virtually pain-free now. If it were later in the season he would probably pitch through it.

Macha
Many of us in Sections 129 & 130 were puzzled as to why Macha put Street in last Friday night's game when the team was trailing by three runs in the 9th inning. It ended up being the first of three straight games where Street pitched, and now look; he's hurt. The Friday appearance was totally unnecessary, and now we're without our All-Star-caliber closer. Great.

He's out for 2 games or so ...
he needed to get some work in - Macha had no way to no what was coming but he needed to keep Huston from getting rusty - be reasonable.

AAAAHHH!!!
"It's my pec minor and it's minor,"

Does he mean it's his pectoralis minor or that the injury is minor?

I think a puppy-killer
reached into Street's chest and ripped out his heart. :-( At least, that's my translation.
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

I just hope Street gets repaired
faster than the ones in my neighborhood.

I think there are many female fans that
would like to assess for themselves exactly how minor Huston's pecs are.

oh, pick me! pick me!!
never have I wanted to quit my job and become a trainer for the A's as much as I do today....

Well,
that explains why he wasn't pitching.

I was cursing Macha for not putting him in the game, then was steamed when he let duke face that last batter after going on 30 pitches. It was evident to me that he didn't have his best stuff and Mach left him in.

I blame this
on the World Baseball Classic.  Throwing players into a big competition without giving them the gradual adjustment of Spring Training is just a plain bad idea.

Street's Sunday appearance
I certainly hope Street's injury turns out to be as minor as the A's are claiming.  But it does add another argument for the folks who didn't think he should have pitched on Sunday.  (We can debate the Friday thing too, although I think Macha's reasoning was pretty sound there.)

Several posters, in the debate over whether Street should have pitched Sunday, talked about how many pitches he had thrown Friday and Saturday.  And they said he should be treated carefully, because it's early in the season, and because he didn't get a proper spring training due to the World Baseball Classic.

I disagreed, defended Macha's decisions, and said Street needed to start closing on three consecutive nights when the situation warranted.

Now, maybe this injury is a big coincidence and would have happened anyway.  And it's difficult, for us and Macha, to know the future.  That said, this development is certainly a compelling argument for those who criticized Macha's use of Street on Sunday.

Another "maybe"--
Maybe Street already felt something and it contributed to his poor pitching performance. Maybe if 100% healthy he closes out the game successfully and it's no big deal to go 3 days in a row. Maybe he didn't tell Macha about the problem until after the game, and Macha was going on bad information when he put Street in on Sunday.

In that scenario, it's a Dan Meyer redux, and the blame falls squarely on Street, IMO.
