Kielty to Sac

Bobby Kielty optioned to Sacramento.

A's optioned Bobby Kielty to the RiverCats so they could have a 12th pitcher in case of doubleheaders this week due to rainouts.  How can he still have options???

Star-divide

Bobby Kielty to the RiverCats???  There's something wierd here.  As I understand it, once you're on the 40 man roster anywhere for 3 years, you're "out of options", well at least as long as the 3 years start with your 4th year in pro ball, or something like that.  Best I can figure, Bobby K's been on a 40 man roster at least 5 years, possibly 6, and was in the minors for 3 year - either way, he's long since "out of options" so how can he be sent down.

Not that I disagree with the choice - with the number of outfielders the A's have, he wasn't going to play much in the first few weeks anyway, and it's almost a certainty that opening night will be rained out - weather.com says the thunderstorms start at just about first pitch!

No
I think that an option year is exhausted if you actually use that option. Like Bynum, for instance. He was never on the active 25-man roster for the three years he was on the 40-man roster, so in each year we had to use an option year. In the case of Kielty, he was only optioned two out of those three years, and after that he made the Bigs and never went back, so he still had an option year remaining.

Correct
You only use up an "option" is if you are sent down to the minors that year.

If you are up the whole year, that means you don't use up an option.

I think
Minor-league rehab assignements don't count as using an option either, but I'm not 100% positive on that.

A player can be sent to the minors
on a re0hab assignment regardless of the "option" situation, but I think he has to be on the DL first. Kielty is not on the DL according to MLB.com, therefore his demotion to AAA is using an option.

I think.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.
