3/14 DLD: for the hell of it

Hello Fellow ANers, let's get things going.

SI, for once, has decided to take a break from covering Johnny Damon, Curt Schilling, and Pedro Martinez to throw us A's fans a bone.  Actually, John Donovan wrote a pretty good article about Thomas and included a few notes about other A's players:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/john_donovan/03/14/big.hurt/index.html

Here are a couple of excerpts from two recent ESPN chats.  The first is from Gary Gillette's chat:

"Brandon (PA): How do you think Frank Thomas will do in Oakland?"

"Gary Gillette: Poorly. While it's possible Big Frank will be healthy, happy, and productive, I'd give 3-1 odds against that happening. I think he's done. "

http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=11062

The second is from Rob Neyer's chat from today:

"Tre (Chicago): Can Rich Harden nab the Cy Young this year? The only real difference betw. him and Johan Santana is one has played a few full seasons."

"Rob Neyer: That's one real difference, and a pretty big one. Here's another; in 2005, Santana walked 45 hitters in 232 innings; Harden walked 43 in 128 innings. I love Harden. But Santana's in a class all by himself."

http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=11078

And finally, Mychael Urban returns with another edition of "A's Mailbag," addressing our relative abundance of catching prospects, what's in store for Juan Cruz this year, and a few other goodies:

http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060313&content_id=1348706& ;vkey=spt2006news&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak

Sorry this DLD is short; I just wanted to get the DLD rolling for today.  When the boss is away, the mice will play, but the boss won't be gone for long.

No Subject
...Frank Thomas soon will start playing in minor-league spring games, where he will not need to run the bases...

I know the A's dont preach running in their system, but to have minor league games where nobody runs the bases is going too far.

They don't have to hit or catch, either
Basically, they just sit in the stands and ask the fans, "What's everyone waiting for?"

No you couldn't.
You could never handle all that sitting...day in, day out...one minor league town to another...always sitting, sitting, sitting.

You said hell in a diary title.
Gets ahead of hitters early and then doesn't fuck around with the corners, just Shull-shocks them by burning right through their wheelhouse-Oz on Jimmy Shull.

Red Sox to win it all in 2006
Well, at least, they're rated #1 in Perry's debut Power Rankings:  Red Sox Look Like Team to Beat

I don't know what Perry is smoking in picking the Red Sox, but he does rate the A's #5.

Urban's rosy predictions
Comeback Player of the Year: Frank Thomas, A's
Cy Young: Rich Harden, A's

Damn, that's an optimism smoothie. I will be excited if neither of them spends time on the DL this year. And I don't mean "On The DL" either.

ps. Kk, I thought your Dump was just fine. They don't all have to be dissertations (Sal or Sharon) or photo albums (jlaff) or pro web layouts (eamb). Hell, I posted two Dumps in one day with no links in them, and I haven't been BaNnEd YeT.  Pony up!

Besides, you could never top me...
I hold the world record for the lamest link dump ever. It was a dump so small, it was no dump at all. You couldn't even call it a dumpling.

suggestions?
I need to pick 10 essay topics that I would be willing to write an essay on and I am trying to find a way to make all of them baseball related so that I can write about something that I like. Does anyone have any suggestions what topics I can use? So far I have: Moneyball, Oakland Athletics, Spring Training, World Baseball Classic. Any help at all would be appreciated!

I'm actually writing a paper on ID vs. evolution right now and I just finished one on the PATRIOT act, so you and my professor think alike. Thanks for the other ideas though.
