Sounding tough for Frank for Opening Day...

Not surprising, but sounds liek Frank clearly has a ways to go to be ready.

The A`s will release the results of Frank Thomas` (ankle) bone scan and MRI on Friday, but admit that Thomas may not be ready by Opening Day according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "We`re going to take it very slowly," trainer Larry Davis said. "Our objective is to see if it`s possible for him to be ready Opening Day."

yeah, great...
from sfgate.com:
Thomas' tests: New DH Frank Thomas went for an MRI and bone scan at 6:15 a.m., but despite the early wake-up call, the A's won't announce the results until Friday, when team orthopedist Dr. Jerrald Goldman will be in camp to examine Thomas.

Thomas, who has broken the same bone in his left ankle twice in the last year and a half, will receive treatment today but will not participate in the workout. He might not be allowed to hit for some time, much less run, putting his availability for Opening Day in serious doubt. Davis said there is no timetable for Thomas to hit.

I don't know about you, but for me that sort of begs the question: What, exactly, were they checking out during the whole time Thomas was on the verge of signing?

the question it begged for me
was who the hell goes to the doctor at 6:15 AM?!?

Sadly, they couldn't check out anything during the great verge.  They were so dazzled by the gynormous diamonds flashing off the man that they forgot to do anything but murmur softly to themselves "ooooh, sparkly."

if they had that reaction ...
... to a lady who was with the male progeny she bore, would it be "Ooooh, sparkly and her son"?

As a youth I had a long talk
with a priest about going blind.
the great playoff miss of 2004 followed by the good try of 2005 but we got the fix for 2006.

Its ok
Its important to not bring him back too early.  He said last year that he came back when he was only about 70%(whatever that means) then got hurt.  I dont want him to play at all until hes been running consistently and the foot is completely healed.  If thats even possible.

Big talk from Big Frank
From Mychael Urban's update today on www.oaklandathletics.com
Thomas, who is 37 and said he'd like to play until he's 41 or 42, admitted that he probably tried to come back too soon from his first injury last year, and that his haste likely caused the second injury, reducing him to little more than a cheerleader as the White Sox rolled to the World Series title.

"I could see there was something special going on with the team, and I wanted to be a part of it," Thomas explained. "So I came back maybe a month or so earlier than I should have, and then I got hurt again."

Thomas senses that something special might be brewing in Oakland, too.
I'm looking forward to staying healthy and getting 400, 500 at-bats."

In 105 at-bats last season, Thomas hit 12 home runs and batted .219. On Thursday he said he expects his average in 2006 to be somewhere between ".285 and .305, with a lot of home runs."

"If I'm healthy," he said, "you're going to have a special player on your team."

Ah the dreams of Spring training
Even though I can't seem to seriously expect that type of production from the Big Hurt, it is still nice to think about it.  If he really did put up those kind of numbers this team would be amazing.

must keep hopes in check

It's too bad if he's not ready
for Opening Day, but for fans were only hoping he could play in 100 games, it doesn't matter which 100. If he misses the first 12 games, but can then play in 2/3 of the remaining games, it will work out fine.

The key word, as always with FT, is "if".

Don't get your hopes up, everyone
The stuff I've been reading today doesn't lead me to believe we are going to see Frank Thomas anytime soon.  And if we see him, he may be a sad shadow of his former self.

I agree that it doesn't matter if he misses the first two months of the season if he comes back and plays well later.  But this injury sounds serious, and there is every reason to doubt that he will come back strong.
