baseball and Music

as a big music fan, and a huge dylan fan, I have always enjoyed "catfish" by dylan, about our good ol' pitcher which some of us know better than others (I am not so fortunate).  its worth a listen (its on the bootleg series Vol. 1-3).

So it got me thinking, does anyone know of any other examples of baseball/A's in some songs??

The band All, which is the Descendents with a different lead singer, have a song "Vida Blue." I also know of is a band named Rube Waddell, but I've never heard their music.

the vida blue
there used to be an awesome post-hardcore band called "the vida blue", but then some dude from phish wanted to have the name, so he paid them $10,000 for it, and they promptly changed their name to ten grand. unfortunately the singer had an aneurysm and died a couple of years ago.

please don't send anything to that address
the label was killed off long ago...and that band owes me money! They are real good though...the good old days...

Well...
The executive vice president of the A's until 1980, Stanley Burrell, had a fairly successful musical career for a few years.

there's a Belle and Sebastian
song called "Piazza NY Catcher" that is in part about going to see the Mets play the Giants in San Francisco. One of the lines is "San Francisco's calling us, the Giants and Mets will play.  Piazza, New York catcher, are you straight or are you gay?"

I think the band is from Scotland or something, but one band member is a big baseball fan.

I was just introduced
to Tigermilk, which is a pretty good album.  It's a little bit jangly, but the wiki entry that describese them as "cuddlecore" is spot on.

maybe
if the A's take their adorable, fun-loving brand of baseball to the big time we'll get to introduce "cuddleball" to the lexicon!

That song came from Dear Catastrophy Waitress which has some of their zippier offerings.  I've not heard Tigermilk.

I doubt that's a neologism
I'm afraid to Google "cuddleball" to find out, though.

You should watch their "Fans Only"
but cuddlecore is perhaps the most obnoxious description of a musical style I've ever heard. The music is whispy enough!

sorry
"Fans Only is the title of their self-made DVD. Excellent companion video for people looking to snuggle up next to a love one and cry!!!!

Belle and Sebastian
"Tigermilk" was nice, but "If You're Feeling Sinister" was a huge leap forward, and is probably their best album.  "The Boy With the Arab Strap" is also crucial.
To their credit, they've continued to expand their sound (e.g., incorporating elements of glam and dance music), rather than revisiting their first couple of albums over and over again.

Layup...
"Centerfield" by John Fogerty has got to be one of the more famous ones.

No A's in there, though...
...unless "Casey" is Casey Beane...  does she even play?  ;)

Are you sure it's not about the A's?
"A-roundin' third, and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man" ... I mean, what other team could that possibly be describing? haha

Obscure....
The late 80s and early 90s Michigan base surf band the Goldentones have a little b side called "Jim Essian", the A's catcher of the late 70s.

What about Hammer?
That is a complete entourage developed by an A's personality.  Okay... probably a reach.

yea
that's who i was referencing above, aka Exec VP Stanley Burrell.

Old School
I thought I was old school but never knew that was Hammer's real name.  Thanks for the clarification.

I am ashamed that I ever claimed to be a fan of Hammer.  This bud's for you Mr. Stanley KIRK Burrell!  Check it out-- he also "doubles" as a Seton Hall basketball player...

MC Lars often wears an A's cap too...
but I can't think that any of his songs mention anyone.

umm
"Baseball" by OZMA is kind of about baseball. It's an OK song.

On a diamond in the rough I spent my better years
I still see her in the crowd
with diamonds in her ears.
And it's depressing that
I can't forget the tune the organist played--
la da da da da da da...
la da da da da da da...

Is our season over?
No four leaf clover
I feel it's getting colder
Now that it's late fall

But can you still remember?
April to november
You and I were members
Of the best team in baseball

Kinda neat.

Forgot about that one.
Rock n' Roll Part III is a pretty good album - lots of clevel wordplay.  I hear they're getting back together for a reunion tour.

A question regarding music at games......?
Does anyone out there know the title/Artist of the music that's played in the games when:

Example: bases full, pitching coach has just visited the mound late inning and the A's are sending a hitter.

It plays with bells and drums but, I've always wanted to hear the whole thing.

I was once told it was WWF music.

Does anyone really know?

Thanks!

Jets to Brazil
the band Jets to Brazil mentions Catfish Hunter in their song "Chinatown". The line is:
"I missed the catch
last of the pitchers Catfish done hunting Harry Lundt"
"Trust me there are No Angels on our team" - Ken Macha
