AN Demographics - where are you from

I know the geographical composition of AN is tremendous varying from local Bay Area to national visitors. I wanted do a poll though of the demographics of this site, especially those that are from Oakland/Alameda themselves. I know this is not an accurate cross section of the A's fanbase, but I think it's suffice to say, other than the season ticket holders, AN does represent one of the more vocal and exuberant fans that follow the A's. So let's see you vote!

Clearly you've never seen any posts by
FormerHuntsvilleStar, or seen his AN Census.  It's pretty cool stuff.

With that being said, I wonder if I take the award for furthest ANer from the Bay Area, living in Estonia for the next 7 months.  Can anyone beat that?

Seven from my count...
See the bottom of this page.

I just realized I don't have ohad on that list...hmmm...better remedy.

Southeast Asia essentially puts you high in the distance rankings.

AN Census

by FormerHuntsvilleStar on Feb 1, 2006 3:47 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

thanks..
but the data looks either skewed or outdated:

Top 10 California cities:

Oakland - 20
Fremont - 6
San Jose - 6
Berkeley - 6
Pleasanton - 5
San Francisco - 5
Belmont - 4
Novato - 4
Walnut Creek - 4
Concord - 3
Hayward - 3
Los Angeles - 3
Sacramento - 3
San Leandro - 3

I cannot believe there is only 6 south bay people here on AN, when we show 5 already in the poll for duration of a few hours.

by ST on Feb 1, 2006 5:47 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I can't argue against that...
It was done mostly during the regular season last year, and I got over 400 responses -- out of over 4,000 registered AN members, most of which probably have never seen it (or have and don't want to participate). There were two parts:
  1. Where are you now?
  2. Where are you from? (As in where are AN members born and raised.)
The list you quoted was from part 2, which I started by request a week after part 1. About only half responded to that.

Also, participation in mine involved actual posting -- which isn't totally anonymous and not as easy as simply voting in a poll question.

I think the only real way to do this semi-accurately is to have location part of the member profiles of this site, and have some page on this site that can compile the data automatically as it is updated.

So yeah...I can't say my survey is complete by any means. Just a little fun is all. :)

i still really applaud your effort, and am sorry i didn't recognize it earlier.

the tabulated graphical layout of respondents in the bay area was particularly good!

Too many people from Oakland...
in that poll, frankly.  Not to say those in the city limits wouldn't be well represented, but the highest concentration of our fan base probably sits between San Leandro and Fremont.

Which then explains why so many get all hot and bothered even at the thought of moving to Fremont.  All you Oakland city residents need to instill such pride in Mayor Brown(and whoever suceeds him)

Basically...
If it isn't Fresno City, Fresno County, Fresno County Island (i.e. Mayfair District), Selma, Sanger, Parlier, Easton, Sunnyside, Herndon, Pinedale, Friant, or any of the above, AND you are East enough and North enough, BUT not too far North or East, then you might just be in Clovis. Maybe. Go Central San Joaquin Valley A's Fans!!!!!!!

Side note: I remember growing up, I had a girlfriend who lived in Selma that I'd go visit occasionally. I thought she was joking the first time she told me everyone hung out at McDonald's....

WHOA!
SWEET!!  By no means was I trying to claim any title, more just trying to to find out a little more about the community I love being a part of.  Actually it's pretty nice knowing that I'm not the furthest away A's fan; makes me feel that much closer to home. And when you're dealing with only 5- 6 hours of daylight and -25 degree weather, you'll take anything you can get.  I lived in Australia before this, and that was cake compared to now: friends, sun, surf, language I speak, etc.  Estonia = snow, language barrier, no daylight (yet, waiting for summer!), etc.

Can't wait for the season!!  elcroata, you're from Stuttgart, right?  My close friend Raphi's from there and I might visit in the next few months!

PS- how did they measure the distance to Estonia from Oakland- was it by going over the North Pole?  Cuz it definitely wasn't that easier to get here...

estonian winters
are the reason estonia has one of the highest suicide rates in the world ;-)

but just wait for the summer. i haven't been to estonia yet, but played a tournament in sweden in june. it's INCREDIBLE - it only gets sort of dark blue for a couple of hours after midnight and the rest is pure daylight.

yep, i've been living in stuttgart for almost a decade now. if you can, come during a world cup in soccer (june/july), it should be something. pitty that none of the brasil games will be played here, their fans rock.

if you do come around, let me know, perhaps we can get together for a beer. i promise it won't be a bud light ;-)

- A day without sunshine is like a day in Seattle -

by elcroata on Feb 2, 2006 3:17 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

haha yeah,
bud light and most American (non-small brewery) beer in my opinion really just sucks.  Especially after living abroad.  In fact, Estonian beer is actually pretty good!!  Saku or A Le Coq (get your mind out of the gutter, people!) are quite tasty.  Yeah, I'm actually coming down to Berlin on the 19th, but only for 2 days-- my sister hooked me and my friend up with some concert tix.  Then it's off to Oslo, Norway on the 22nd!!

You're absolutely right about the summers here.  People apparently just go off and party like crazy...so I guess the moral of the story is that if you can make it through the winter, you're golden.  Luckily the days are getting longer.

The New York Times actually just did an article on Tallinn and the party scene that I recount on my blog, so if you're interested in reading more about what I'm up to, check it out:
http://estonianwifi.blogspot.com
</shameless self-promotion>

I'll let you know for sure if I get down to Stuttgart...do you get any A's games in bars there?

Baltics
I'm going to be passing through Riga, Latvia this summer. Too bad I won't have time to see Estonia too.

by OaktownTribesman on Feb 2, 2006 10:55 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

when will you be in Latvia?
There is a small chance I'll be there at some point this summer. If there's any chance you can get to Estonia, let me know. It's not a long busride and you could see Talinn in 1 or 2 days.  I'd even show you around if I'm here....

Go A's!

I'd only be in Riga for one night (on my way to Moscow), though it's not set in stone. Have you been to Russia yet? Do you know how's the train ride from Talinn to Moscow?

by OaktownTribesman on Feb 2, 2006 5:54 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Cool
I'm also going to be in Germany for the World Cup. I'll let you know if I'll be in Stuttgart for any of the games. And BTW I guess you can say I'm a Brazil fan, though only by default, as my parents are from there. Though I prefer to root for the underdogs (Brazil already has 5 titles, do they really need one more?) :)

best of all is
that bud light is some "golden" sponsor of FIFA (soccer governing body), so gues what? only bud light can be sold in german stadions during world cup, no german beer. the people here are going nuts, lol

"do you get any A's games in bars there?" that's a good one. apart from the fact that most of  them would be aired at 4 AM, you mean? ;-) very rarely, they show 1-2 games a week on pay-tv and then mostly east coast stuff. mlb.tv rules...
