New Year's Resolutions - A's Style

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone has big plans tonight. Feel free to share!

Today, for an open thread, lets talk about New Year's Resolutions for A's players. I have compiled a small list, but I think everyone should add their own. If it's anything like Christmas' Which A's Player Would You Want To Be Stranded On A Deserted Island With, I think we could have a lot of fun.

  • I think Mike Piazza should get a better television agent; or whoever picks the commercials he does. Just not Palmeiro's.
  • I think Bobby Crosby should find a new doctor.
  • I think Joe Blanton should buy a blog.
  • I think Marco Scutaro is just about ready to challenge Milton Bradley's stranglehold on the board game market.

Keep 'em coming!

Oh, and here's the countdown for tonight...

10...9...8...

Done.  Now I can go about breaking all the other ones.

WHOever
Ever since Nico jokingly chided someone for failing to use the word, I've been seeing all sorts of misuse of "whom" on this site.

<lecture-rant>
For those who want to know, here's a tip:  Turn your who-phrase into a sentence.  If the who/m becomes he (or she) then it should be who (nominative); if it becomes him (or her) then it should be whom (objective).

For example: You would say "he picks the commercials", so it should be "or whoever picks the commercials".  On the other hand, you would say, "want to be stranded on a desert island with him", so it should be "whom do you want to be stranded with?".

That brings us to rule number two (very important):  If the correct term is whom but it would sound too prissy, it's OK to say who in place of whom.  If the correct term is who, it is not OK to say whom instead of who.  That's just wrong.

Practical corollary:  If all of this sounds confusing to you and you don't know what's what, just always use who and never use whom and you'll be fine.  Some dialects of English don't use whom at all, and there's no shame in speaking one of them.  If you do use whom, make sure you're using it right, or you'll just sound ignorant to those for whom use of whom feels natural.

thanks...
I'll take ur advice...if in doubt I'll go with who

Hmm...AthleticssFanatics4ever,
you really need quotation marks around "who". Otherwise, it's an open question sorely lacking in punctuation at the end, but should really read "if in doubt I'll go with whom".  :-}

I think Bobby did find
a new doc who figured out what his real injury was to his back. That part's good. Now he needs to figure out how to get healthy and stay that way.

Billy Beane's New Years Resolutions
  1. Tie Larry Davis' contract to incentives on how many days players spend on the DL.
  2. Offer players a bonus for home runs and wins against Barry Zito.
  3. Hire a team chiropractor and assign them immediately to Kotsay and Crosby.
  4. Offer Adam Melhuse a part-time role on the coaching staff, to earn his keep.
  5. Separate Joe Blanton from Nick Swisher, to prevent future alcohol-related issues of all kinds.

My resolution is as follows:
#1 Find Nick Swisher when I go to AZ in March
#2 Make Swish realize how he can't live without me
#3 Post bail before my departure date for home
#4 Get a 2nd job to pay for the therapy and medication I need to get over my delusions of Swish love

Sad news...
Day after getting eliminated from the playoffs, CB from the Broncos Darrent Williams was gunned down in Denver by a drive-by shooting.
