no 1st rounder for zito, right?

because the giants had one of the 15 worst records in baseball last year, they keep their #1, right? we get a sandwich + the giants 2nd round pick, correct? if that's true...well, that blows. i never liked that rule. considering the parity in the middle of MLB (the top teams usually stay the same), there isn't a hell of a lot of difference between having the 10th worst record and the 17th worst record. i understand protecting the absolute worst teams - limiting it to the 5 worst teams makes sense. oh well, at least the giants 2nd round pick will be a high one.

2nd round pick
No better than 70th overall.

Dammit,
the Giants couldn't even not-suck enough to give us a decent pick!

Curse youuuuuu, Sabean! <shakes fist>

"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

As I've said before
this new rule sucks.
Two-thirds of the earth is covered by water, the other third is covered by Kotsay.

this compensation thing is ridiculous
we lost miggy a few years back for a crappy pick...and now get crappy picks for both frank and zito. of course, teams like the red sox and yankees get high picks for losing their guys and turn their farm systems around quite rapidly. granted, we'd have worse picks if zito signed w/ the mets, but not getting a 1st rounder is not cool.

hold up - giants got mets 1st round pick, right?
when alou signed w/ them (how he's a type A free agent boggles my mind)? that's definitely not bottom 15. are we entitled to that pick? god, i hope so, because if we zito, now the richest pitcher in baseball history, for a sandwich and 2nd round pick...

Life isn't fair
Sabean gets to keep his own 1st round pick (#10) plus he gets the Dodgers' 1st round pick (#22) and the Mets' 1st round pick (#29). He gets 2 Supplemental 1st round picks (#34 and one in the mid-50's).

He signed Bonds, insuring sold-out crowds for at least half the season.

And he signed Barry Zito.

so what do the A's get ?
Their own #1, three supplementals (Zito, Payton, Thomas) and two seconds (theirs and the Giants)?

A's get...
Their own 1st rounder (#26).

Two Supp. 1st round picks (#35-ish and one in the mid-50's).

Giants' 2nd round pick (low-70's) and their own 2nd round pick (mid-80's).

Nothing for Payton. (No Arby offer, remember?)

dammit all!!!!
i was really looking forward to beane having a few #1 picks this year - instead, not even one extra #1, in spite of losing a top 5 MVP vote getter and the most expensive pitcher in baseball history. wtf, man, wtf?

Yeah, me too
Of course, last year we had NO first round pick and NO supplemental picks, and 2006 may go down as a great A's draft based on the early returns on Mitchell and Sulentic.  Let's hope that 2007 will be even better.

I guess we A's fans can still be glad
that the A's are still much better than the Giants.

Not a bad winter for Sabean
He's set up well to prove his GM chops in the post-Bonds era.   If the G's can learn to draft.
