Fans recognize A's defense?

Ellis and Chavez lead fan voting for Gold Gloves on ESPN.

http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/sportsnation/ballot?event_id=2561

Not surprising about Chavez, as his reputation is well-established.  And although the 2B voting is close, it is interesting that Ellis is getting some props nationally, especially since he missed the ALCS.

Kotsay is toward the bottom of the OFs.  No other A's listed.

Kind of on-topic
Whatever happened to the Ellis D sign? That was my favorite.

It would be fitting
if Kotsay, after years of being one of the top 5 defenders in the league and never winning won this year after being among the worst ...

Elli is the only one who really deserves it this year, but Chavvy is close enough that you can excuse the voters from not going through the effort of finding someone to switch their vote to.

One of the worst?
So you are saying that Kotsay falls between #8 and #14 among AL Center Fielders?

While he is not quite as good as he has been the past couple years, I completely disagree that he was one of the worst in '06.

I agree with this disagreement
Kotsay gets a better jump on the ball than any other player in baseball.  His instincts are phenomenal.
Hard work never hurt anyone, but I'm not taking any chances.

And almost never misplays the ball
and has a great arm
and is smart with his throws.

In addition to seeing many other center fielders, I see plenty of our own other 'centerfielders' - Payton and Bradley.  While they are good outfielders, they are not even in Kotsay's league.

My friends (to both AG and ER)
I'm sorry to say that the same defensive metrics that consistently rated Kotsay among the best and that led myself and others among the more statistically inclined to tout him as a perennial Gold Glove candidate over more flashy fielders say that he fell off tremendously in '06. My own eyes agree.

Hopefully health can renew his range but in '06 he was not his heroic self.

by devo on Nov 1, 2006 1:24 PM PST up reply actions

FWIW, quite a few defensive metrics
do not rate Kotsay highly. Chris Dial, whose stats are based on ZR, has Kotsay at -6 for Rs / 150, only ahead of Sarge Jnr and Coco Crisp.

BPro has him at -9 FRAA (fielding runs above average) and 7 FRAR (fielding runs above replacement). For comparison, Coco Crisp is -1 FRAA and 12 FRAR. Sarge Jnr is -8 FRAA and 10 FRAR as a CF.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

When Ellis got hurt at the end of ALDS#2...
...one of the things I thought was DAMN, now he won't get any national attention!  But thank you, D'Angelo Jimenez, for sucking -- it gave the national announcers lots of opportunities to pay attention by saying, "Here is where the A's really miss Mark Ellis..."

The poll misrecorded my votes
So that could say something about its accuracy.

The choices they provided suck.  Cabrera, Young and Jeter for GG shortstop?  Where's Alex Gonzalez?

It said my choices were in bold ...
but none of them were in bold ... a few were italicized, though ... but not my choices ...

Did I not push submit properly?

Can I vote for Kotsay 3 times
Instead of chosing 3 Outfielders?

Yeah those picks are kinda lame. When I voted, it said Ellis was second at 35%. I am really glad the fans don't vote, cause there would be some ridiculous people getting GG this year!

Maybe Elli could get the runner-up award.
