Radio call of the year

This needs to be said:

Vince Cotroneo's call of Kotsay's inside-the-park homerun was unbelievable. It was as good as it could possibly have been, and the most memorable call since Korach's call of Tejada's homer for the 18th win of the 20-game streak.

If you missed it, listen to the warm up on Friday to hear the call.

Cotroneo's been criticized some this year, but this is definitely a time to praise him.

You're my hero!
Thank you so much!

I also listened to the call while "trying" to work... and it was unbelievable!  Vince has annoyed the heck out of me at times this year, but that call was really amazing.  Very exciting moment.

It was a great call,
but Fosse's "color" of Kendall's home run is my personal favorite.

During Kotsay's homer, I was driving, stopped at a stop light, pumping my fists like a complete idiot and looked over and saw a guy in a truck doing the same thing. October baseball rules. Go A's!

yea...
what a tough job for Vince.  I mean, he obviously knows theres no way to replace him, but <sigh>.  I agree.  Nice call by vince....but...I miss bill king.

by CyZito on Oct 5, 2006 7:41 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can probably guess...
"The pitch...<crack> line drive to center field, Hunter coming in, he dives, HE MISSES THE BALL! <moment of stunned silence> It's rolling to the wall! Kendall's steaming around third, he'll score easily! Kotsay's turning at second. White gets to the ball in center, he's gonna throw it in. And Kotsay's coming around third! The throw from Bartlett...off line! Mark Kotsay collects an inside-the-park home run and the A's retake the lead 4-2!"

and because it wouldn't be Bill King without one:

"HO-LY TOLEDO!"

Perfect. Absolutely.
Oddly enough, or maybe not so odd at all, I thought about this this morning as I picked out my shirt to wear to the game tomorrow (AN Bill King shirt...six rows behind the Twins dugout - check me out).

Anyway...what I concluded was that his call would be something like this, but we never would have heard it.

Would have been a Ken Korach inning, no?

props to Vince
That call yesterday was great - his best all year.  I listened to the post-game show just so I could hear it again.  (before that I would have to say my favorite Vince-call was the Antonio Perez home run.)

One of the best this year has to be Korach's call of Street striking out Bonds.

by miguel on Oct 5, 2006 8:12 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That's my favorite call of the year
as well.  Here it is:

KenKo:  This is quite a scene.  Street taking his time, now climbs to the top, Bonds waiting at the plate, deep in the box, waves the wood a couple of times, an even stance - and the windup.  Here's the 1-2 pitch to Bonds...  SWUNG ON MISSED!  And The A's have BEATEN THE GIANTS!

Excellent
Though not quite as awesome as the Tejada bomb of Eddie G to extend the streak. Korach has an excellent approach and voice that Viince will never come close to in my mind.

But this was one hell of a call... I made everyone who works for me (30 people) listen to it this monring!!!!!

by jeffro on Oct 5, 2006 8:37 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The play itself...
is still truly amazing. I had looked away from the TV for a few moments just before Kots' AB and when I looked back, I suddenly felt like I wasn't even watching Game 2 anymore. As the ball skipped by Hunter I thought, "This is an archived highlight, right? This can't really --" and then the other side of me blew up as I screamed: "He's going to do it! That's an inside the parker!" I was jumping up and down like a fool 'til my wife and mom came in from the dining room. As Kots touched home plate I gave my dad a high-five and started dancing around the room screaming, "He did NOT just do that! Tell me he -- YEAH-YEAH-YEAH!"

This is why, though I got my degree in radio-TV broadcast, I'm no longer pursuing the field.

Vince also did an excellent job
on Scutaro's game-ending flyball in the 12th (11th?) against K-Rod that first game of the Angels' series at home -- both the fly to right that fell just foul, and the game-winner itself.

So it seems that, whatever his other limitations, he has the ability to rise to the occasion.

And as far as Bill King is concerned, if Bill were still with us, wouldn't that have been Ken's inning?  So the question isn't what Bill would have said, but what Ken would have said.

Good for Vince
Excellent job on that call.  Of course it would be great if Bill were calling the game, but nice for Vince to get a classic call under his belt so soon.

Kudos to Vince
He may not be Vin Scully, then again Scully isn't even Scully anymore. I went back and heard his call on that unbelievable 11-10 Dodger comeback win against the Padres (four homers to tie it in the bottom of the ninth and then a walk-off homer in extras by Nomar). It sounded like he was half asleep.

by Peter in Montreal on Oct 5, 2006 10:04 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Scully completely botched the call
at home yesterday, when the two Dodgers were tagged out. He butchers it entirely. The Mets guys get it right.

Having MLB radio allowed me to listen to both.

And, yeah, he was asleep on those homerun calls.

by RLangford on Oct 5, 2006 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

YES
That was a totally magnificent call, the way he ratcheted it up as the play developed mirrored Kotsay's acceleration as he circled the bases, a difficult parallel to achieve.  First the minor excitement of what seemed at first to be a harmless 2-out single as Kots jogged to first, then the dive and miss as Kots turned it on, then a little lull as Kots began to run out of gas coming into third, then the last push of adrenaline as Wash sent him in.

All perfectly described, and certainly the call of the year, kudos to VC.

IIRC
Didn't he do a pretty sweet call on Swisher's inside the parker in Yankee Stadium as well?  Maybe that's his thing.

Great call
I thought the same thing, Rlangford. I had just stepped out of my building (in which I can not get a radio signal) and turned on the radio before Kotsay hit it to center. Cotroneo did a great job ratcheting up the excitement in his voice as the play unfolded. I was seriously pumped for the rest of the day after that.

I remember
listening to the game at work and jumping out of my seat screaming go, Kotsay go, being fed by Vince's call.  It was beautiful.

I had picked up my 11-year-old daughter...
from school where she had a half day due to parent-teacher conferences. We were listening on the car radio on our way to Sports Authority to buy her some volleyball shoes and kneepads. My first thought when it got by Hunter was that there was a chance for an inside-the-park HR and the excitement grew. By the time Cotroneo said Kotsay was rounding third, we were yelling "Go...GO...GO KOTS!" and as Vince called the slide by Kotsay "SAFE!", my daughter and I were whooping and hollering and high-fiving each other.

A few moments later she says, "Dad...are you crying?"

"Stop it. You're weirding me out."

Bill King's Call
A friend of mine says he never heard Bill King's call when Hatteberg got that hit to extend the Streak to 20. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a recording of it anywhere online. Does anyone know where I could find this?
