With their win today in Game Two against the Minnesota Twins, the Oakland Athletics are once again on the verge of moving on to The American League Championship Series with one more victory(knock on wood, ladies and gentelmen).
Whether they do it or not, it is disheartening and in my opinion embarrassing on the part of the national media. After the comensing of the game today, the attention was not to the Athletics doing what they do best...Pitching, Defense, and.....AND.....TIMELY HITTING. The Athletics did catch a break on the Torri Hunter's ill advised dive on a clear base hit on the part of Mark Kotsay that turned into a 2 run home run.
ESPN and other national media outlets never pointed to the fact that the Athletics manufactured two of their runs by moving them over, not trying to do too much.
Nor did they point out that the bullpen's line: 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, and 5 K's.
The bottom line is: This is the 2006 Oakland Athletics. They are a very gritty and smart baseball team that does the little thing right. Apparantly the brain trust in Bristol, Conn. doesn't stay up past their bedtime of 11pm, because they have been missing a lot of good baseball coming out of the East Bay for the last 6+ months.
No worries though, the Athletics know that they don't receive the credit at the national level they certainly deserve.
THEY DONT CARE. NEITHER SHOULD WE!!!
We got the best kept secret in Major League Baseball, if the 2006 Athletics play THEIR GAME...and yes ESPN, pitching and defense is their game. The great secret may find its way to facing either New York or Detroit in the next round (again people, find a piece of wood to knock on).
We get past this first round, we have a real good shot at World Series Title numero diez.
But one thing at a time, 3 to win one has been difficult in recent memory for this franchise.
Here's to more October Baseball!!
Go A's!!! Lets rock the Twins to the golf course!!!
