Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

AP Confirmed: Ellis has broken finger

His status to be updated tomorrow.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/10/04/sports/s151342D21.DTL&type=as

I think this is a pretty big loss for the A's - he's the ultimate pro.

Oh well, it's the playoffs. Keep fighting...Does anybody know how Crosby is doing? We just may see him figure prominently IF this thing gets to the ALCS.

Right Index Finger
Thats bad. If it was his Glove Hand, it would have been much better. He might have been able to wear a cast.

But the throwing hand... damnit.

That's his bottom hand for hitting.
Couldn't swing a bat with any degree of effectiveness that way, either.  Players need fingers.

weren't they saying he could be back for the ALCS?

if so, jimenez can fill in for the rest of the ALDS, and then scutaro can move to 2B when crosby comes back.

Losing Ellis is terrible
but I feel better with Jimenez there than Perez. In the brief look we got at the end of the season, I thought he looked decent in the field, and he had some success against major league hitting in the past (albeit a couple of years ago). But maybe it's just a case of preferring the poison I don't know to the one that I do.

Ginter looks like the only choice
Anyone who was in the organization as of August 31 is eligible to replace an injured player. After Jimenez and Bocachica, Ginter seems to be the only middle infielder we have with any major league experience. Next best choices:
Scott McClain, a DH masquerading as a 3B, who has had 34 ABs in the majors.
Kevin Melillo, who repeated AA this year.
Yikes.
(Pennington spent the year at Stockton (A) and was hurt for half the year and terrible for the other half)

by FreeSeatUpgrade on Oct 4, 2006 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm pretty sure andeux is correct
I did some checking into this when the question of including Jimenez on the postseason roster came up.  I had thought being on the 40-man roster on August 31 was a requirement for postseason eligibility, but all evidence indicates that the club can select anyone who was in the minor league system on August 31 to replace an injured player (except that an injured pitcher MUST be replaced by a pitcher and similarly for an injured position player).

One of the best articles I have seen regarding this issue is found here.  The text of "Major League Rule 40(a)" referred to in this article does not seem to be available to the public; I guess it's in a 3-ring binder in Billy Beane's office.

Is that how K-Rod was
able to pitch in the 2002 playoffs?
AN apeshit!

by Jennifer on Oct 4, 2006 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I think so
I seem to remember some people complaining about him being allowed to pitch in the playoffs because the angels used the injury-replacement loophole for him. I imagine we could do the same if Ellis is out.

Hooray! If we can call up the offensive juggernaut that is Keith Ginter, finishing off the sweep of the Twins should be a piece of cake.

by TempletonPeck on Oct 4, 2006 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, that was the K-Rod story
From the article I linked above:
The most notable example of a team taking advantage of this loophole in Rule 40(a) is when the Angels got Francisco Rodriguez onto their playoff roster in 2002 even though he wasn't a big leaguer until Sept. 15 of that season. He'd go on to win a huge five October games for the club, rising in a few weeks from anonymity to stardom.

As stated above, the Commissioner has to approve a team's attempt to activate a post-Aug. 31 player for the playoffs, based on it having an "eligible player ... unable to render service in a postseason series because of a specific injury." In the Angels' case, the "eligible player" in 2002 was evidently right-hander Steve Green, who had pitched in one big league game in his career -- 18 months earlier. Green had shoulder surgery after making one April 2001 start for Anaheim and missed the entire 2002 season. For the Commissioner to rule as the 2002 season ended that Green was an "eligible player" under Rule 40(a) seemed to be a bit of a drastic relaxing of the rules.

Here are a couple of more links I found when I did a diary on this subject two years ago, when I was wondering if Swisher would be eligible for that year's postseason:

http://mikesbballrants.blogspot.com/2002_10_06_mikesbballrants_archive.html#82867490
http://kmbumb.people.wm.edu/roster/glossary.html

As someone mentions in the comments to that diary, there is a slight mistake in the first link: a position player can be replaced by any other position player, not just one at the same position.

Jiminez
His stats don't look that bad. According to baseball prospectus, he's an average defender (-2 FRAA at 2B,  58 FRAR). Throw in a .349 career OBP and you've got yourself a pretty good third string second baseman.

by Nick86 on Oct 4, 2006 4:51 PM PDT reply actions

Jimenez: decent Zone Rating and Range Factor
His career defensive numbers at 2B are (Ellis' in parenthesis):

Fielding %: .984 (.987)

Zone Rating: .829 (.873)

Range Factor: 4.99 (5.19)

DJ's numbers would have put him right in the middle of the AL 2B this year.  There's hope he can be adequate.

That being said, I fully expect for MaEl to be the gamer he is and take the rest of the ALDS off to recuperate and hoping that we advance is in there for game 1 of the ALCS. The aforementioned article said its just a fracture too so i dont know which to believe but a fracture sounds better to me.
