Around SBN: Miikka Kiprusoff Wins 300th Game, Buffalo Crushes Boston

Just A Few Bullet Points

  • Twins gave us this game with their mistakes and impatience at the plate.  Zito threw 92 pitches over 30 batters.  Santana 107 over 30 batters.  Despite throwing only 56% strikes, Zito walked only 3 thanks to Twin impatience.
  • The first three batters going 1-for-16 is one reason this game could have been a lot less stressful for A's fans.  At least one of those Thomas home runs should have been a multi-run affair.
  • Street's arm angle is still problematic- it's almost a sidearm.  I think Macha should have let Zito pitch the 9th.
  • Joe Morgan is a terrible announcer- he said 2x as many words as he needed to, repeating some points 3 times.

Zito should not have been left in
Zito was finished.  I would have preferred seeing Duchscherer in there, but Street got the job done.

Are you another Boston-based A's fan?
I think 02115 is Brookline.  The ranks are growing.

I'm not too worried about the 1-3 hitters in the lineup.  Going 1-16 against Santana happens.  All three of those guys have had strong second halves, so I wouldn't worry about them just yet.

"The first night, we were right there," Bradley said. "All we needed was a couple of touchdowns, and we would have had them."

this is johan santana pitching
the poor game from kendall, kotsay, and bradley isn't that shocking...santana was pretty damn filthy today. you basically can't tell the difference as a hitter between his fastball and changeup, and considering the speed difference, that explains a lot (just watch kendall's first AB - he was helpless).  they all had pretty decent swings throughout the game, santana was just better, and he's a rare breed.

I'm more worried about a rebound
by the heart of the Minne lineup.  Those guys are getting put up as the goats all over.  Hopefully, they'll press and chase.

Morneau worries me...
but Mauer?  Trying to bunt with 2 outs?  WTF?  Power will always worry me...Morneau hit a couple long flies today...but Mauer doesn't scare me at all

not that I disagree with you on everything but...
Point 1 and Point 3 seem a bit conflicting.  I agree Zito wasn't as good as his numbers and had he been facing his own lineup he'd have gotten knocked around walking batter after batter, but this being the case, why then would you want him in the 9th?  I'd have preferred Duke for the 8th & 9th but we won without using anyone but Street for 1 inning so we go into tomorrow well rested.  To me, that's as big as beating Santana.

Was in Class/Work all Day
But to someone who missed the game, 3-2 means a win, ugly or pretty, still feels good.

This is what amazes me . . .
Minnesota blew a game today by doing "anti-Moneyball" things.  They gave away outs on the basepaths, and they displayed the plate discipline of a drunken Ruben Sierrs. And yet, if they continue to play this way and lose this series, you won't hear anyone really criticize their philosophy.  If, however, the A's lose the series, you will hear repeatedly that they lose because "Moneyball" doesn't work.

Didn't say Zito pitched badly
#1 and #3 are not in conflict.  Zito pitched well, and well enough to beat an impatient team, the same one that was batting in the 9th inning.  I was just worried about Street not getting the ball down, and there you go, a ball went to the warning track in the 9th.  I simply thought Street would not be as effective as Zito in the 9th.

Only ugly if you're a twins fan
The A's played well, but it wouldn't have been well enough to win if the Twins had executed.

U ever think...
maybe Kendall noticed the Twins were gonna be aggresive and him and Zito played to that effect?  I think so and that's what I heard some analysts say.  Give credit where credit is due.  We outplayed em today IN THEIR CASA!!!
