I know its over for us....

but I was wondering if anyone else around here is extremely frustrated with the world series.  I know we could've beaten Detroit...whats happening to them now happened to us.  And everyone knows that an 83-79 club should not win the World Series...crap shoot, schmap shoot...hot club or not St. Louis is an awful team from an awful division (although I'll always like LaRussa, Dunc et al).
This diary entry in no way proposes any solutions to fixing a playoff scenario where the worst team wins the championship...and I dont dislike the Wild Card.
But I think we are all pretty astute baseball fans around here and we may be looking at another year of the WS being won by a vastly inferior team, with many other teams grossly more talented and just plain better.  Is this what fans want?  I know I dont.
Maybe the Tigers, a legitimate team, will get rolling and win this thing as they deserve...but i will certainly have a bad taste in my mouth if the Cards win with their record, and thats nothing against St. Louis...

That's what crapshoot means--
It doesn't mean that winning a short series is a matter of "luck". It means it's about being better over such a small sample size, it's necessarily the way it would come out 10 series out of 20.

If the Tigers played the Cardinals in 20 7-game series, the Tigers might win 13 of those series. It just might not be this one.

Woulda Coulda Shoulda
Gotta beat the teams that are in front of you one at a time to reach your goal. The A's didn't do that.

I remember many people saying how it was bad luck that the ALDS was against Minnesota because Detroit was the team the A's could beat and that they were sure to go down in the first round again.

We nailed Minnesota to advance and then got nailed by the team we were supposed to be able to take.

It's all about winning and right now the Cards lead the series by 2-1.  If they win it all they won't be a "vastly inferior team", they will be the 2006 World Series Champs.

Yeah, it is disappointing
to see the Tigers seemingly replicate the behavior of our A's in the ALCS. The things that are absolutely crucial to having a shot to win the series they're having a hard time with, namely pitching to their ability, playing solid defense, and taking good at-bats. They gave away at least one run in game 1, and at least 2 last night in game 3. They gave away countless at-bats in Game 1 and didn't look a whole lot better last night. Game 2 was a lot better, but even then they were doing 2005-2006 A's re-enactment theater by leaving so many guys on base with legitimate scoring chances.
I dunno... it's both refreshing and frustrating at times that the "best team" doesn't always win, especially when dealing with a small sample size like a play-off series. Refreshing in that a team who supposedly doesn't have a chance on paper can rise to the occasion and outplay their rival, and frustrating that a team you know is much better than they're playing seemingly can't get it together when it counts the most.
The only solution would be to just give the championship to whichever team has the best record at the end of the regular season, I guess, and not have play-offs at all.
But I don't think anybody would go for that, including myself.
Maybe instead of having a DS and CS they could have a round-robin of the 4 teams in each league making the play-offs, and then a longer World Series between the two teams winning the round-robin for the AL and NL?
Still not very realistic to imagine, and would things change that much over 11 games vs. 7, for example? Perhaps. Probably not.
In the end, if the play-offs weren't structured the way they are, or didn't exist, we wouldn't have the emotional excitement of championship-clinching hits or strikeouts or whatever. And that would probably be a shame, 'cause didn't we all grow up imagining those scenarios in our heads as the most awesome dream?
"Bottom of the ninth, 2 outs, two men on; they trail by 2 and they're down to their last strike... he steps back in the box... the pitcher stares in, and comes set..."
(I would usually strike out at that point in whatever backyard or park we were playing, which is why you don't see me in an MLB uniform these days...but it sure was fun to imagine!)

to be perfectly FRANK
We were completely dominated by Detroit and I think using "what ifs" is a disservice to them.  I agree that it would be pathetic if the Cards won the series but I'm surely not counting the Tigers out yet.

I sure can't cheer for either of them and I have actually "dreamed" about the A's being in the WS... unfortunately I always wake up.

..one of the things that i love most about sports
...is that the worst team can sometimes beat the best team...that's what makes it so much fun....

I like the Cardinals
They have always been my NL team. So I really can't help but disagree with you on just about every point! I hope they KILL the Tigers! =)

Yeah, I don't have anything against the Cards
but I've been saying all year how the AL is so vastly superior to the NL. I'd just like a sample size of 1 to back me up every once in a while so stupid people don't say things like, "If the American League is so much better, then why can't they win the World Series?"

Hey now ...
don't you two know that by supporting the Cardinals you're hurting the A's?

The A's are currently tied with the Cardinals for #2 on the all-time World Series list, do you want the Cardinals to break that tie, subjugating our beloved green and golders to third place?

In the AN fanasy league I was in ...
I took third place.

It was a head to head league, with three rounds of playoffs.

Long story short, if I had been seeded one slot lower, I would have won the league and none of my playoff matches would even have been close. The team that ended up finishing second in the finals got hot in the semis and beat me. If I had finished one spot lower, I would have been in the opposite bracket, beaten the ultimate champions and then beaten that team in the finals.

What can you do?

by devo on Oct 25, 2006 4:17 PM PDT reply actions

The format is the problem
Has anyone noticed that aside from the Mets winning their series against the Dodgers, every other team which had the homefield advantage lost.  Aside from the AL domination in the past few years in the World Series it seems an inordinate amount of Wild Card teams are winning the playoffs.  I think it is almost a disadvantage to have the first two games at home in a short series, it puts tremendous pressure on the home team to sweep both, whereas the visiting team just wants to win one.  I don't know of any solution or even know if there should be a solution, the reality is that any team that gets in the playoffs is a good team, and they are as likely to beat the other teams as to lose.  It is all about pitching.  The A's didn't have it against Detroit, it is that simple.
