DLD 10/17/07: Gumchewer 2007? + Diego 3.3

Everyone wants to know who the America's Next Top Macha will be. Presumably Beane is going to haggle hard on the contract with whomever he gets, since we're paying Macha $2M to chew gum without authority.

Star-divide

Another flip-flop? Only on Beane's feet (Ostler)
Ken Macha was a good fire. A's mastermind Billy Beane fired Macha at 11 o'clock Monday morning, and by half past noon, Beane had recovered sufficiently to face a firing squad -- media people firing questions.

Washington is first, best and only choice
It now can, should, and must be said: Billy Beane needs Ron Washington to be the next A's manager more than Washington needs him, and in more ways than either of them knows. And because Beane's the one who can make it happen, well, tick tick tick.

Gwen Knapp thinks Macha-flip-flop poisoned his relationship with Beane.

Bruce Jenkins votes for Dusty Baker as the new Macha.

Purdy says Frank put the Hurt on Macha, Wash better be next and Macha was extremely competent at Xs and Os, but loveless. Agree about Hurt, not about Macha as XO mastermind and not about Macha as a joyless stub.

Killion thinks Macha was a nonentity and Leyland is a "truly great manager".

I don't get the Leyland is God mob. Yes, the Tigers kicked our butts by pitching lights out and hitting the snot out of the ball. Was Macha God for having the A's win much closer games versus the Twins?  The Tigers are young and talented, and that's what happens when you draft well as the worst team in baseball for a couple of years in a row and make good deals to bring in good veterans. Leyland is doing a good job, but how much value is he really adding here?

Finally, part 3 of The Dialogues of Diego Chavez.

I don't believe that Leyland is GOD
To Leyland's credit, neither does he. He's no TLR, hyping himself up as a genius.

Leyland has shown with Pittsburgh, with Florida, and now with Detroit that given good players, he can succeed. He has shown that he can work with good players.

I should also point out that guys like Brandon Inge, Marcus Thames, Craig Monroe were not exactly highly touted prospects, or stars, by any definition. A few years ago, Inge was arguably one of the worst everyday players in baseball. Right now, he's one of the best 3rd basemen.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

Item!
In an article about Mr. Kos, the original Wonkette reports that ANers are lonely and pathetic:
That got him thinking about the formula itself. One element was partisanship, certainly, but another ingredient, he suspected, was loneliness - like what he felt when he started Kos. It reminded him of how homesick he felt as a Chicago Cubs fan in the Bay Area.
She also preemptively uncovered the impetus for Macha's dismisal:
Not only does legendary general manager Billy Beane actually post to Athletics Nation, he has given fellow bloggers credit for helping to shape his thoughts.
Clearly, Billy sat down to read AN after a long season, and thought to himself, "Golly, I guess I need to get rid of Macha."

  1. The NRAFs are lonely and pathetic.  We RAFs are sexually prolific and lead robust lives in all aspects.

ned lamont...
i was shocked by this:
The day after Lamont's win, Moulitsas came to lunch in a Lamont T-shirt. But he fumbled when a woman walked over to our table, pointed at his shirt, and said, "Can you tell me anything about that guy other than he's antiwar?" He couldn't.

he didn't know anything about the guy the day after the election victory?  that's not very impressive for a political junkie.
but maybe kos had spent all his time reading up on the more famous members of the lamont family, such as corliss lamont and thomas lomont...

Two bad myths being perpetuated:
1) That, because small-market teams have had comparatively more success recently (though the big-market Yankees, Mets, Cardinals, and Dodgers all made the playoffs this year), that therefore the problem is solved. It's not solved. It's not right to give one team $200+ million, match them up against other teams that have less than $50 million, and call the process "fair."

And if you think that Detroit's beat-down of New York shows that money doesn't matter, then you should have no objection to a $100m salary cap, because New York would be no worse off, right?

2) That the Yankees winning is "good" for baseball. Try telling that to a Blue Jays or Orioles fan.

"The A's are boring because all they do is win."

Dusty Baker: Call Me, Billy!
Dr. Lewis Yocum puts Huston Street on speed dial, as Dusty is interested in our managerial opening.
Also, 20 years ago, Baker wound up a splendid playing career in Oakland. So he has an understanding of how the A's organization works.

"I do know him," he said of A's general manager Billy Beane, "though not that well."

Does Baker believe Beane thinks kindly of him?

"Yeah, yeah," he said, "as far as I know. But you can't hire yourself."

Baker said he won't pick up the phone and call Beane.

"That's not protocol," he said. "The agent calls. Everyone knows I'm out here."

I have an understanding of how stereos work, because I owned one 20 years ago.  For some reason, these cartridges I have won't fit into the little slot on the new one I just bought, though.

Hire Stan Conte
From Rotoa world---"Giants trainer Stan Conte has stepped down after 15 seasons with the team's medical department.

Conte is probably the game's most recognized trainer and he's regarded as amongst the best in the business. Dave Groeschner has been promoted to take his place. "(Barry)Bonds' issues never came into the picture when talking to Brian Sabean about my decision," Conte said Monday. "It was really a personal decision. I'm moving on to the next project." One of those projects is finishing his doctorate in physical therapy at Boston University."

I bet there is more to it than that.  I mean, the point of a doctorate in Physical therapy must be to get a job, say, with an MLB team.  Which he has.  I would like to see him working with the A's if he could keep a geritric ward like the Giants on the field.

Fascinating
Troops rallying around upper management:
Now, the A's would like to have Beane's back, worried that he'll get criticized for firing a manager who just took the team to the American League Championship Series.

"I don't want Billy to take heat for this because this is what needed to happen,'' Kendall said. "If Billy is comfortable with it, we're behind Billy. Maybe Billy saw the same thing the players saw. If Billy gets blasted in the media, it's ridiculous. Billy's going to get a lashing, and he shouldn't.''

Scientists create new superheavy element...
And how does this pertain to baseball?
The scientists said they produced element No. 118 by bombarding the radioactive element bartolocolonium with a beam of calcium ions in a Russian cyclotron. At first, they detected only a single fleeting atom of the dramatically unstable element, but last year they found two more atoms -- and that was enough for them to claim a major achievement.

They were going to bombard californium
but bartolocolonium was a much bigger target.

u of miami / FIU brawl
anyone know where there is video of the fight with commentary from lamar thomas (i believe he was doing the game for the local comcast station)?

i found a bit of it on youtube, but it's not that good.  i heard he went on for like five minutes about how he wanted to take the elevator down to the field and fight.

hilarious stuff, this makes kendall and bradley look like boy scouts...

Child Abduction Emergency
TV stations showing the same message.

But, like everything these Comcast n Co do, they completly screw it up.

They failed to mention ANYTHING about the abduction, like who was abducted, what they looked like, or who might have abducted this person.

NO INFORMATION WAS GIVEN!
