It's Geren

That's what I'm hearing from the poeple I know at the A's. They're in the front office, so I usually take what they say as pretty reliable. That's all I know- don't know details, don't know timeframe. Sorry for the vagueness of the diary. Hope he's not just a younger Macha...

If this ends up being false, you can use this diary for role-playing. You be Macha, I'll be Melhuse.

I'm guessing this whole timing thing...
...has a lot to do with what else they're planning to announce this off-season.  You know, get the bad stuff out of the way early, then announce Frank's re-signing, then Milton's, then the New Digs, etc.

At least, that's what I hopex3.

OT Question,
I had purchased tickets for the ALCS games 6 and 7 and have yet to be refunded or receive anything from the A's concerning the refund.  Has anyone received anything regarding this?

with ALDS and I received an email from them stating I would receive a refund.  I received the refund for the DS, but I have YET to receive even an email from the A's concerning the refund for the CS tickets.  I was wondering if it was the same sort of deal for the CS or if it would take longer.

well, even if they gave all refunds
yesterday, which i highly doubt, your bank probably hasnt gotten around to giving you the money back yet. i would wait until at least thursday, then call tickets.com, then call your bank.

Last post-season...
...after it was clear that Macha was leaving, Melhuse went in and ripped-him a new one-or-three, over his non-use during Kendall's first season.  Why not indulge himself?  After all, Macha was a goner.

Then Macha makes the call, and comes back!  Oh,  SHIT!

Poor Melhuse had to grovel back in there and allow as to how he might've handled the situation a little better.  But it didn't work so well for him.  And now, Macha's gone again, but Brown and Barton are waiting in the wings.

...and now you know the REST, of the story.

plenty safer/cheaper options than Frank
Sheffield, for one.

I'm less and less convinced that we should even give Frank 2 guaranteed years, let alone 3. There's even an argument to be made that we cheated fate this year, and that nothing more than a repeat of this year's contract would be advisable.

The revanchism is just an added bonus in this scenario.

Yup
But Payton didn't say he threw games. IIRC, Sheffield stated he deliberately threw games, and would continue doing so until he was traded.

I will freely admit that I'm not being rational here; but to me Sheffield commited the ultimate sporting crime: deliberately trying to lose. Since he stated that he did so, I accept what he said at face value.

good point
Since I 100% support the lifetime ban on Rose, I'd be remiss and inconsistent if I didn't come down on Sheffield for this.

That being said, (a) Sheff has a history of saying whatever pops into his addled brain, (b) he's never said and there have never been allegations that gambling was involved, and (c) to the best of my knowledge, MLB has never investigated this.

So: if true, yeah, I think Sheffield should receive some sort of punishment. But I suspect it was just Sheff mouthing off.

That may yet happen
Not so much in a "that'll teach 'em to complain" sense, but perhaps in a cost-cutting/asset valuation/liquidity sense, as part of the run up to a new park.  I don't see Lew doing the Full Loria...but if the A's have concluded they can't go dollar for dollar with the AL West for a few years, it's not too hard to picture an A's team of plucky young up-and-comers positioning themselves for a few years down the road.  A low ego manager with a reputation for working with youngsters would fit that model.

Geren was bench coach this year...
...is that an open title that you stash an ineffective staff member in or is there some kind of real effort, talent or responsibility involved? I mean does the bench coach work with or help Crosby or our other young players?

Who is the genius that came up with "take the first strikes" against Rogers? Kenny threw first pitch strikes to 18 of 25 batters! What a mastermind! I'm an old timer, and I believe that kind of "robotic formula managing" in a short series is suicide. That is also why the A's get stuck in quicksand every post season. Player by player the A's have overmatched many playoffs opponents on the field but not in managment.

But those teams actually believed the manager makes a difference! Wow! ...and they won!

Leaving Z in without a curve for strikes, leaving Loaiza in to give up 7 runs, pitching relievers beyond their proven capabilities back to back and too many innings. The A's office made the series with Detroit look like somebody feel asleep at the wheel with the car going 90 during commute hour! But anyone can manage, ...right?

I'm just an old timer overreacting, what does it matter who the manager is? Hell! Macha proved that right? Oops! I guess he can't! He was fired. ...Anyone can do it except Macha.

Anyone can be bullpen coach too!
Geren spent the three previous years; 2003-2005; as bullpen coach!
Talk about your memories!
Rhodes, Dotel, Foulke, Juan Cruz, Duke's tendinitis, Garcia-Cassilla, those consecutive seasons of reliever/bullpen meltdowns, ...complete utter bullpen disasters like that could happen to anyone! Geren just happened to be there! Kind of like an innocent bystander. I keep over reacting! Like a manager or coach is actually doing something!

...Geren and BB are from San Diego! ...What a coincidence! Same High school?

Blez, I think you realize Geren will be Mgr and the reason your essay stresses the over importance placed upon the MGR by some teams is that BB has no real choices. BB treats managers like jokes, mindless puppets, dunces on his short leash to jerk around at will.

What self respecting manager would work for BB? Who would volunteer to take that ridicule and see the media heap story upon story of how Beane considers coaches as functional failures requiring his constant input and direction. Hell, they can't even follow directions!

Welcome on board Mr. Geren!

well, it's likely we will have the opportunity...
to see what Geren can do next season.  I don't think he will be a failure, just mediocre.  Rather take a risk on someone like Washington who has the potential to be more than just mediocre.

Wash may be more than just mediocre:
Yet, also a total failure.

I do see him as a leader of men though, and it will be tough to lose him.

I know that Milt and Hurt will miss him for sure. Chavy too...The whole infield...The parking Lot attendants...The chili cheese stand in LF...

Geren will be an improvement.
Good comments, saint!

Seems like people are underestimating Geren, he'd probably get more respect if he wasn't BB's friend, which is sad -- the dude won't be brilliant and new, but honestly, he seems like he can do a good job.

Any guy that knows how to properly use a bullpen in a mopup situation has my heart. :-)

Maybe the boys should have sent Macha to Applebee's with Swish to get Geren in there a little more!

I don't think we could go wrong with either Geren or Wash, seems a shame that people are so against Geren based on his ties -- both would probably do good things for the team in different ways.

"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

that is what I meant...
by saying taking a risk on Washington, he could fail but has the same chance at being above average.  As for Geren, I just see him as another Howe/Macha type - avreage at best.
