DLD 10/15/07: First Day of the Offseason

No link dump yet?  Well, I'm opening today's up. Add links to good stuff preferably not about the Tigers series.

This seems like as good a time as any to start hijacking a few link dumps.

Star-divide

The last two years we followed the Adventures of Diego Chavez. Here is an archive of the last two seasons.

Warning: Some mature themes this season.

Thank you
for bringing back the Adventures of Diego Chavez!!!  :D

By the way, the first day of the offseason is always the worst.  It's worse than the moment when your season OFFICIALLY comes to an end.  <Sigh>
It's almost 2 PM on Sunday and we don't have an A's game.  Maybe I should just pretend like we are playing on SNB tonight.  And at 5 PM, watch a taped game from last season.  :(

Diego Chavez! Yay!
Now if we have one of those every day, I think I'll survive the offseason.

Maybe.

Part of me is glad that it's the offseason.
Sadly, I like AN a lot more in the offseason.  The day-game denizens retreat to their lairs, there are only a few diaries a day, people spend the offseason working on very creative projects that they share with AN.  The MaEl H8RZ and the FIRE MACHA NOW and the Chavvy Has no Heart crowds take a break from their cheap shots.  I know that I'll probably write about baseball a lot more often since I won't be able to actually watch it.

Without the A's, I'll have a lot more time for working and spending with my wife and lot less stress and aggravation.  I'll get to sleep before 1 am and won't have to fall asleep excited about the victory or thinking about the loss.  Of course I'll miss watching the Muppets play and win or play and break my heart, but a little time away from the A's is good.

Like, say, two weeks.

Did you see AN's mention in the Mercury News?
In an article discussing the 25th anniversary of the wave, some freak from AN was quoted as saying,

"The wave is a travesty. Usually started by inattentive, inebriated fans who would struggle to tell you the current score, let alone the situation of the game, the wave violently distracts from the activity on the field.''

The problem with the wave
isn't the wave itself, it's that it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GAME!!  I know, this is your point too, but it's just frustrating.  If a great play resulted in the fans bursting into a wave, that could actually be pretty cool.  But it's more just a narcissistic act on the part of the wave-starter -- look at me, I started the wave!  Did you see the wave I started on TV?

Black Sox
Juan Uribe and his brother reportedly shot and injured two men in the Dominican Republic on Friday.

The men who were shot have already been released from the hospital. According to the report, Uribe opened fire, perhaps in self defense, after the men approached his vehicle. An investigation is ongoing. Asked to comment on the incident, Steve Lyons said he wanted all four men searched in case they stole his wallet.

Woo!
If you haven't read it yet, Bruce Jenkins gives the story of the post-game guys in the clubhouse. :-(

Gwen Knapp gives us some Big Hurt love.

When the media entered the room, Thomas was walking toward Milton Bradley's stall, where the right fielder had shrouded his head in a towel. Thomas leaned down, put an arm around Bradley, patted his back and said quietly: "You're a winner."

The real tragedy of the A's not getting out of the second round -- wouldn't you love to see this?

A's owner Lew Wolff was desperately hopeful early Saturday and seemed determined for the series to continue. "If we get back to Oakland," he said with a smile, "I'll open the (upper) deck and sit up there myself, if that's incentive enough." The Coliseum tarps weren't supposed to be removed until the World Series.

And of course the obligatory 'end of Zito as an A' article.

"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."
