Love and Gratitude: your top 10 A's moments of 2006
Let the achievements of this year not be dampened by the outcome of the past week: our lads are now back where they belong, in the elite teams of MLB. Yes, it's painful. You never want to come this close and cough it up. But sometimes you just must tip your hat to the better team, and it feels pretty clear to me that these Tigers are far and away the best team in MLB right now, and I fully expect them to do what's never been done in the Wild Card era and run the table with 11 straight wins. When you're hitting walkoff, pennant winning homers, you know you've got the mojo. Leyland may be the best manager of our lifetimes. Impressive.
As for us, this was a tremendous season, in which monumental strides were made through daunting adversity. If I'd have told anyone here that we'd dominate the division and go deep into October with Richie making only 10 starts and Crosby being lost for most of the year, you'd have thought I was crazy. Not that I'm not crazy, but you'd have laughed me out of the room.
This was the best, most resilient team of the Beane era, and we finally broke through in the playoffs and terminated an ongoing series of failures that I know has eaten at all of us for years. So many magic moments, too many to recount, so many memories to last a lifetime. We have a marvelous nucleus here, built on the twin pillars of pitching and defense, and even though Z will leave I think we will be fine and ready to roll the big ball back up the hill in 2007. If I am BB I extend Bradley (another 3 hits today-- on one leg -- and inches and a stiff breeze from a huge HR) because there is no limit to his talent. I truly believe that he has found a home here and can now go on to join the ranks of the elite, game-changing players in baseball. In my opinion he's perfect for Oakland and I lock him up and keep the team built around his prodigious 5 tools and unequalable passion.
I feel sad we lost, but I also feel limitless love and gratitude for what our team gave us this year, and the same for this community, which I feel is the star around which all things Athletics revolve for the hardcore, real fans like us. I want to say "thank you" to our players and organization and all the fantastic people that make this community the best team-related site in the world, hands down. I had the time of my life this year, regardless of what happened in the last 4 games, and each of you helped make that possible. Thank you all so very much.
And now, my top ten Athletics moments of 2006... please list yours in the comments section below:
- The 17-inning win vs. the Dodgers, culminating most appropriately in the bases-loaded walk.
- Huston's strikeout of Barry Bonds to beat the Giants in the 9th.
- Frank Thomas walking off a ridiculous blast on 3-0 into the toppermost bleachers vs. Scot Shields to crush the Angels.
- Jason Kendall finally hitting a HR in an A's uniform vs. Kansas City, aided by the emotional energy of Ray Fosse.
- Frank Thomas hitting 2 HRs vs. the White Sox on his return to Chicago to a 5-minute standing ovation from their fans, and then the 2 HRs to knock them from the playoff race on a weekend to remember in September.
- Barry Zito making his last start before the trade deadline, leaving to a deafening chant of "ZI-TO!!! ZI-TO!!!" and then taking the only curtain call for a pitcher I have ever been in the ballpark to witness.
- Milton Bradley leading the offense to a 12-3 shellacking of Seattle, coupling with an Angels loss for the AL West title on a magical night in late September.
- Frank Thomas hitting a HR of inestimable value vs. Johan "Cy Young" Santana in Game 1 of the ALDS vs. Minnesota, and then sealing it with a titanic blast to give Huston the cushion in the 9th for one of the biggest wins in franchise history.
- Mark Kotsay, huffing and puffing and blowing the Metrodome down on an unforgettable trip around the bases in Game 2 of the ALDS.
- Magic Marco Scutaro putting the dagger in the Twins' season with an improbable 2-strike double to clear the bases and clear the path to that elusive first-round triumph in ALDS Game 3. Being in the 6th row from the field for that game is something I will treasure for the rest of my lives.
Go A's!!!!

Good list, but how can you leave out...

that one
I missed that one, because like a schmuck I turned off the game (I was in SF, listening on the radio) after Huston coughed it up to them in the top of the 9th. Bad emperor, no sceptre.
I found out what had happened when I turned on Robert Buan after the game was over and he went to a commercial just as I switched it on talking about Milton. An A's fan in full regalia then came up the escalator, returning from the game (I was at the 16th Street/Mission BART station) and told me exactly what had gone down.
I repeat my earlier assertion that MB is poised to ascend into the ranks of the ten best players in the game and we should retain him for as long as possible. If you're somehow reading this Milton, THANK YOU for being here, we love you.

Yeah, where is Bradley's walk off
The Clinch game wasn't that great, since it was expected. The best moments are those which blindside you.

For me, I'd borrow your #s
- Scutaro's walk-off sac fly off of K-Rod to all but clinch the AL West
- Duke's pick-off of Ichiro to end the game
- Completing the improbable three-game series sweep in the Bronx behind Rouse, Scutaro, and Perez
by Nico on Oct 14, 2006 8:53 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That sweep
Anyway, I would also add:
The back-to-back-to-back homers that Big Frank, Milton and Chavy hit off Vicente Padilla.
Danny's shutout at Yankee Stadium (and Kotsay's homer with the pink bat).
And the game against Toronto where Danny gave up eight runs in the first two innings, but the A's scored seven in the third and went on to win, 12-10.

- Scutaro's walk off hit in the rain against the Yankees!
- Ronnie Mac bringing the fro back with the Grand Slam!

many wonderful moments, but the best
Also for me, I had to work pretty hard to watch the games... freaking TiVo failed to record each game, but luckily someone on AN turned me on to TVU, so I could watch part of the games at work, bust home on BART wondering what was happening, then watch the ends of the games on live TV.
Milton's walkoff on AN Day was the best regular season moment... the combo of AN Day and Milton's personal redemptive "Hey Oakland, Welcome to ME" was just too great.

Or how about Frank Thomas

Oh no, not you too! ;-)
I was there. It was his second at bat. He whiffed in his first one.
HR in his first Spring game, at least.

Thanks for this
One indelible image for me is from the 17 inning game against the Dodgers with the boys on the top step ready to celebrate. I will never forget how every single one of them was cheering the team on to win. The rally caps, rally baseballs, rally sunglasses. Kotsay looking like a kid with his enthusiasm. Blanton there in the dugout even though he was pitching the next day. Huston there even though he had blown the save. That was one of those moments when I knew this team was special.

great idea for a diary, recommended
my top five:
i'd have to go with the three ALDS games (3,1,2), the bradley walk off to beat the blue jays on AN day, and then clinching against the mariners even though it was inevitable.

A few to add:
Zito/Duke 1-0 win in the first game in Anaheim, helped out by the guy with the yellow that and the capri sun as I recall.
Chavy's 8th inning go ahead HR against Tampa Bay in August; Swisher's 8th inning go ahead HR the next night against Seattle, helping both end their slumps.
Thomas's three run double against the Yankees. Great call by Ken that they used in their intro most of the year.

No mention of the bench-clearer?
Meeting Swisher and Brad Fischer on the second anniversary of my mom's death, and winning tickets to the A's v. Red Sox game and an autographed ball that day. That was my best non-game memory of 2006.

Top three A's.... and an extra
3. Opening Night.
I know most of us want to forget the night Zito got creamed by NYY but for me, it was sweet to be back in the ballpark on a cool clear night, looking at the green grass and guys playing baseball!
- Super Marco's bases-loaded double that put the Twins out for sure.
- AN Day 3: Bradley's walk-off after it all seemed doomed!
This is an A's thread but the most exciting and unbelievable game I went to this season was the Dodgers/Padres game with quadruple back-to-back homeruns AND a walk-off by Nomar! Absolutely crazy fun!
by streetfan on Oct 15, 2006 6:48 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't have new ones to add, but this is my Top 3
- The Dodger game that lasted forever. I was in Los Angeles that weekend, listening to bits and pieces of the game on the radio and appreciating Vin Scully. But later, I was back at the hotel, watching a game that just seemed ridiculous while the rest of my family fell asleep. I was glad I didn't miss it.
- AN Day. It's always fun to get together, but Bradley's walkoff was a tremendous moment I got to share with one of his biggest fans, baseballgirl. The game combined good times, a nice day, interesting conversation, late-game anguish, and jubilation. It's why we all love baseball.
- Scutaro's double. It was the moment I knew when the series was won, and I managed to destroy the slinky in my office throwing it across the room because I knew the A's weren't going to blow their chance this time.
