Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

2007 here we come...

Great 2006 but in the AL West and the AL overall, you know Billy will be mapping out a plan to keep this team at a championship level.

Here's my advice for Mr. Beane.

Don't even bother talking numbers with Zito. Thnak him for the great times and tell him to have fun in LA or San Diego.

Don't give in to Frank Thomas' ridiculous demands. Two years guaranteed is not worth the risk. I say 1 year at $5 million with incentives and an option for the 2nd year. If he can't agree to that, then let him walk.

Trade Bobby Crosby and Huston Street NOW! The A's could get some quality players for these two. Both are young and talented, but if Billy can get quality players (bullpen and or a 1B) then he should pull the trigger and let thier "potential" be some other team's problem.

Resign Jay Payton. I can't imagine he would demand more then the $4.5 million he made this year. Payton was huge for us this year and deserves to be back in the green and gold.

Either play Dan Johnson or trade him for whatever you can get for him. I think DJ can be a quality big leaguer but he has to play. If you do trade DJ, then hopefully we can bring over a !B in a trade for perhaps Crosby or Street so tht we can move Swisher back to the outfield.

Speaking of the outfield, TRADE Mark Kotsay only if the right offer is given. I love Mark but if a team offers a quality bullpen arm or a admirable player with some speed, then this may be something the A's might want to pull the trigger on.

Make Joe Kennedy our fifth starter. I have full faith in Joe. This would obviously mean we would need to add new arms to the bullpen, but I have mentioned that above with other possible moves.

Lock up Swisher and Bradley. Bradley to me is the best player on this A's team and locking him up would be money well spent, the same for Swisher who will only improve.

Obviously all these reccomended moves will have an affect on what we do with Kielty, Saarloos and even Daric Barton. We have a few players in the minor leagues that may not seem great on paper, but I'm sure will be quality ball players.

Never let Eric Chavez bat higher then 6th in the lineup. (This one is for Ken Macha)

Do everything you can to keep Ron Washington. Make him the highest paid coach in MLB, but keep him.

And finally but most importantly, the A's need some speed in the lineup, wether it's at the top or bottom of the order. This team needs someone who can get on base and put pressure on the defense and the pitcher. If we can acquire this type of player through one of my suggested trades above, then do so.

Go A's!!!

I would add that we keep Scoot
He has been so clutch for us and can fill in everywhere.  Every team needs a utility guy and he is perfect.

Clutch doesn't pay the piper
Nor is it a skill that usually carries over from year to year.

It has more to do with opportunity that anything else.

Scutaro is a backup who hits .250 and has no power and can't play SS for shit.

Sorry, but I'm sick of the Scoot love around here.  He did Squat against the Tigers.

No doubt... if we trade Crosby, gotta keep Scoot.
I love the guy. May I also add, we need to give Antonio Perez another shot. Both of these can be done with trading Crosby.

I like the Kennedy Idea
He could post a 1.4 whip and that is all Zito did for us this year.

I disagree on Street.  He is solid and posts good numbers.

Maybe Duke should close, but street is a very good, cheap reliever.

your moves seem too rash
and there's an awful lot of trading going on.

I don't think Billy will do a lot of that, and more importantly, I don't think a lot of those moves make much sense.

Agreed on Zito, but what does it hurt to ask for a number?

I think Frank has earned a guaranteed year and another mutual option for 2008. He's the best pure DH available.

Crosby's value is too low to trade now, and his glove is hard to replace at his price. Huston is still very young and very cheap, not to mention talented. I think much of his struggles can be remedied with more regular practice (see WBC) Why trade him?

Resign JayPay? I like him, but he's still got it in his head that he's an everyday player, which he isn't. He's honestly overpriced at 4.5 I think. We can probably find a better option for our 4th OF.

I agree with play or trade DJ. He's worthless to us on the bench, and as a player already in his prime, he's got little upside. I think you move him for what little you can get.

I wouldn't trade Kotsay unless someone overwhelms (SP or very nice farm talent). His defense is still very valuable even with his injury history. I think he can play for the A's for at least another season if we can find a good back up for him.

Joe's got terrible numbers after 35 pitches. He certainly seems destined to be a bullpen arm, but giving him a shot at the 5th spot might not be too bad. He's not exactly a LOOGY with his lefty splits.

Bradley is very impressive, but I worry about his health. In order to compensate, we need a good bench bat at either 1B/OF, and that should be taken into account. I agree with locking up Swisher...he's a special player, even for a corner infielder/outfielder.

I think, greatly due to injury issues, the minor league system took a step BACKWARD this year. Even if we do have guys who will help the A's in the future, we need our system to rank as one of the best in baseball to allow BB all the roster flexibility possible.

If healthy, Chavez should ALWAYS bat higher than 6th. No question.

Ron Washington is important, but at this point, it's up to the Rangers and Ron whether or not he remains with the team. We'll miss him, but we'll go on.

This team has some good speed in my opinion. It's better to have guys that go 1st to 3rd and have power than Chone Figgins (imo). We've got that.

I agree about Chavez, but when is he ever going to
be 100% healthy. The type of injuries he had this year seem liek they could be lingering ones and that's what bothers me.

On that subject...
I kind of hope the training staff sees big turnover (Larry Davis?) Of course Frank was well taken care of this year, but it sure seems like 2 nightmarish injury seasons in a row.

yeah.. you may be able to chalk that up
to just bad luck, which this team seems to attract.

Observation
You appear to have a very short term memory.  Never bat Chavez higher than 6th?  Trade Crosby?

Then you go on to say that we have to keep Payton and that we should keep Scutaro around.  A little too much weight on the postseason, perhaps?

Here's what we know:  The core of this club, if we are going to be successful in the next couple of years, is going to be Eric Chavez, Nick Swisher, and Bobby Crosby.  If Swisher continues to progress, Chavez gets back to his career norms, and Crosby stays healthy and figures it out, that is a great middle of the order.  I worry that Bradley will soon price himself out of our team, but he would be great to stick around as the #6 hitter, or even a #2 hitter.

One thing I do agree with you on, though, is Frank Thomas.  He gave us a great year, and I would LOVE to have him back next year.  But if we have to break the bank, or guarentee a 2nd year-let him move on.

Scutaro, I base on the past 3 years and how he
has played solid. He's no superstar nor is he goign to put up killer numbers, but he has been there when we needed him and a great utility player. For payton, the guy has been as solid as anyone on this team since coming over mid-season last year.

As for Chavez batting 6th, I will stick to my guns on the fact he should bat 6th.

lack of better words
but you are fucking tripping.
TRADE CROSBY AND STREET?  You ignorant fuck.  If you compare crosbt and tejada at this point in their career, crosby is putting up better numbers.  what the hell is wrong with you.  street and crosby are an integral part of our offense for the future. dude, you are pretty stupid

Calm down man,
Everyone on this bord is a person and has feelings.  Although you make some valid points there MUST have been a better way to put that.

by Threepwood XX on Oct 14, 2006 11:01 PM PDT up reply actions

first off... Street isn't part of our offense...
next, Crosby's number's compared to Tejada's is a mute point when you consider Crosby is injury prone and will probably never play a full season. Back injuries are pretty much a career killer and if we can get something for him, then do so. Plus, even when Crosby was healthy this season, he did NOTHING.
