Marlins Interested in Portland

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AmAOx0BZOhtONgdOf6A53IsRvLYF?slug=ap-marlins-oregon&prov=a p&type=lgns

Personally, i'de love to see this happen since im an Oregon native. Really is sad how all Portland has is a Padres minor league team and my pathetic Trailblazers.

Also, what do you think this would do to the NL West? I really don't see any of the teams getting younger in the west except maybe Arizona.

Would there be any chance they would come to the AL though? It would hurt if they did with all those damn good prospects coming up. :(

easy to fix
If the Marlins moved to Portland or Vegas for that amtter and stayed in the NL. All MLB would have to do is move either Arizona or Colorado to the NL central and move Pittsburgh to the NL East.

I hope they stay in the NL because in a few years all those prospects are going to pay off.

If the current Marlins ownership stays...
...it wouldn't matter if they moved to Mexico City - they'll self-destruct, drive away fans, and eventually pull up stakes again within five years.

Oh, they'll get over it.
Both of them.

Actually, I suspect that the Loria ownership of the Marlins is actually utilized by the MLB to destroy franchises to the point where the fans don't mind losing the team too much, whenever a market becomes less than hugely successful.

First Loria took over at Montreal and did everything he could to ruin the franchise - no TV contracts, no new stadium even when the roof was falling in on the old one, antagonizing the fans by selling all the best players off. Then he moves to Florida and, despite winning a World Series, does the exact same schtick. Sell off all the assets, trot out a loser, start talking about moving if the fans don't get motivated, move.

Here's hoping he doesn't buy the A's next.

I like Portland
and if it ever came down to the A's moving to Vegas or Portland, I'd much rather see Portland.

amen.
i think vegas would not very good for any pro sports team.  too much money and outside interests involved.  any city with legalized gambling shouldn't have pro sports, IMHO.

Let's go !!

The thing with Vegas...
..is you'll never get a crowd. There's just too much other stuff to do, and if you've ever spent time in Vegas during the summer, you know that the city EMPTIES of people. The casinos have to give away rooms to get people into town, the casino employees all shoot off to the east coast to work for Trump, and a lot of the locals head north to get away from the heat.

Additionally, the AAA Vegas '51's are a joke - 2500 person crowds on a regular basis, when I lived there in 2000.

Interesting to note in the story...
Northern New Jersey? I can't think of a worse place to put an MLB team. Well, actually I can, but Cincinatti already has a team.

Also, the Marlins are looking for a 37,000 seat stadium - is 'small and expensive' the new black?

i think another team
should be put in Canada.

what city?

I would love to see a national league team in canada.  Then I could actually have a second favorite team.
Ottawa?  Montreal again?  Vancouver?

Do they have Marlins in Portland?
Maybe they'll be renamed the Portland Salmons.  Maybe they could hire Tim Salmon as a coach...or mascot.

Portland
Seems like they'll be a perpetual bargaining chip until the private sector shows up with cash (and given the way the city has ran industry out of town, that's not going to happen anytime soon).

Reading the Portland papers, there's a lot more skepticism this time around.

Additionally, there's way too much to do in Portland.  People moved here from Seattle and SF for a reason.
