Daisuke MATSUZAKA >Future Oakland Ace< {oversea ball #2}

Daisuke Matsuzaka.
A future Oakland Ace...?

A fastball being clocked in at tops of 100 mph.
The double spinning, curveball/slider/screwball Gyroball. Video Here.
ROY, ERA title holder, all star.
1st pick in '98 draft.
25 years old.

2001    Seibu Lions    15-15, 3.60 ERA
33 G, 240.3 IP, 214 K
2002    Seibu Lions    6-2, 3.68 ERA,
14 G, 73.3 IP, 78 K
2003    Seibu Lions    16-7, 2.83 ERA
29 G, 194.0 IP, 215 K
2004    Seibu Lions    10- 60, 2.90 ERA
23 G, 146.0 IP, 127 K
2005    Seibu Lions    14-13, 2.30 ERA,
28 G, 215.0 IP, 226 K

In 2005, Matsuzaka also led the league with 15 complete games, three shutouts.

I really don't know where to start for this hard throwing right hander.

During the US/JAPAN all-star game, Matsuzaka dominated, pitching a complete game 5 hitter, taking a no-hitter into the 5th inning. He is a workhorse, and can handle 9 innings easily (in high school, he threw 270 pitches in 17 innings during the Koshien National High School Tournament. The next day, he would close out the game, and in the following game throw a complete game no hitter to win the championship. Roto Authority expects Matsuzaka to have a debut similar to Hideo Nomo's: 13-6, 2.54 ERA, 11 Ks per 9 innings.

"Without question he could pitch in the major leagues. He has four major league pitches, and has a good idea of what he's doing on the mound. It's hard to compare him to anybody because of his unique delivery." - US Manager Bruce Bochy

Currently pitching for the Seibu Lions, Matsuzaka was denied the ability to play for the MLB in 2006 (understandable), but there is a very good chance that he will apply via posting in 2007 to play in the MLB. (Posting: MLB teams give sealed offers to  NPB clubs to NEGOTIATE with the player. After winning, they then get the chance to negotiate. Seattle won the negotiation rights of Ichiro for 11 million, then signed him to 15 million a season.)  Matsuzaka is not avail. for free agency until 2009. (He will be 29, I believe.)

Out of every Japanese NPB player, Daisuke Matsuzaka is the one to go for. He is young, hard throwing, has a never before seen GYROBALL, and the Seibu Lions Ace would bring such attention to the A's like Ichiro brought to Seattle.

All the information and evidence is there, and having Matsuzaka would be HUGE for the rotation (as ANY rotation.) Several teams are expected to have interest in Matsuzaka not surprisingly, but since he would be up for bidding, then nothing is impossible. I'm sure there is more to write about Daisuke, if I find/remember anything, I'll update.

Hope you all are well.
I'll do a report on KEI IGAWA next-- The Ace lefty of the Hanshin Tigers (Yabu's old team.) He is considered to be one of Japan's top pitchers as well.

GET HIM NOW!
I don't care if we have to bid $12 Million, grab him and keep him. He will pay for himself with merchendise and TV contracts in Japan.

What an interesting pitcher...
The MPH difference between the fastball and gyroball must be massive.  Either Seattle or the New York teams will grab him up quick, he's out of our price range...

I was under the impression that he will be very $
I have heard he will be heavily bid upon and will be a >10 million pitcher when he comes over in 2007.  Probably out of our price range.

You never know.
As someone pointed out in regard to the Yabu signing, it is worth a little bit more to sign a Japanese star because you then will pull a little bit more of the market, making the signing a bit more worthwile regardless of what the guy does on the field.

I'm all for this, bring him here and teach all the rest of our guys the gyroball!!  Or just dominate on your own, that'd be cool too.

late last year...
there was word that he was headed to ...
<yup, you guessed it>
the yanks.

he's out of our price range.  period.

by rhyun on Jan 4, 2006 6:50 PM PST reply actions

hmm, actaully
I think it was just the Yanks were most verble about persueing him.

I'm not so sure that tensions with Japanese pitchers and the Yankees are that good, considering I think the Steinbrenner called Hideki Irabu a "big fat toad" upon his departure.

Pitcher doesn't get a choice ...
only the team that bids the highest with his Japanese team gets to sign him.

by devo on Jan 6, 2006 12:05 PM PST up reply actions

I dont think so...
they get to TALK with him.
They could pay 11 mil to talk with him and nothing still could not get done.

you're right ...
but no other team has the right to sign him. The Japanese player is stuck with his Japanese team, who no longer has any incentive to offer him again, since teams will be scared away from paying because of signability issues.

For anyone a bit more interested,
check out Rob Neyer's article on the gyroball and Daisuke.  I actually learned something from Rob Neyer, holy crap!

re
It would be great, but the guy is supposedly going to be pursued by every big market team when he comes over.  We won't be able to afford him.

"Paying for himself"
Matsuzaka would come with a media frenzy.

From the TIME magazine article:
"He's the emperor around here, and Daisuke is like the emperor's son," says a team official.

The public reveres Matsuzaka as royalty. His round baby face makes older women want to mother him. His swagger makes younger women want to marry him. Older men like his work ethic. Younger ones admire him for dyeing his hair a coppery red. "He says brave things, like how he will strike out batters, but then he backs it up," says 21-year-old fan Junko Kushima. "That's exciting." At the start of his first pro season in 1999, Matsuzaka predicted with un-Japanese bravado that he would be rookie of the year at season's end. He was.

His face is everywhere, endorsing electronic appliances, soft drinks and an airline. When the team travels the league circuit, squealing fans swarm around him. "I've never seen anything like it," says American teammate Reggie Jefferson. "He's like a rock star."

People born between the years of Matsuzaka's birthday in 1980 and Dec. 1981 are also called the "MATSUZAKA GENERATION." You must be pretty good to have a generation named after you.

Don't you think he would more than likely "pay for himself?" I'm sure Ichiro does. After Ichiro left his japanese team, the entire team went bankrupt and folded.

Cool
looks like he will be fun to watch someday.  I'd love to see the A's get him, but it just doesnt seem likely.

Pay millions, just to negotiate with him, only to see him go to NY or LA.  No doubt that he could be awesome, but its a huge risk considering the fact he could be a bigtime injury bust.

forget it
He's never coming to the A's ($$$). But I do hope he comes over and pitches for the NL. That gyroball is damned cool.

Lost in Translation
In Nihongo: "Dai" means big, "suke" means assistance. You add them both up and that's this pitcher to every MLB team.
