Which non-divisional team do you hate most?

Yankees? Red Sox? Giants? Secret option D??

It's a topic I got thinking about from CHFDigital's recent diary about switching allegiances fully from the Yankees to the A's, and hacotton wrote an impassioned post that I agreed with, and it got me thinking about which team I hated most.  I'm also curious who you guys hate most.  And to those who think hate is too strong a word, feel free to replace it with the phrase "strongly dislike."

I lived on the East coast for 4 years and just like hacotton I hated the Yankees before I moved out there and rooted for the Red Sux as the logical alternative.  But I soon realized that I actually liked the Yankees better than the Sox, primarily because sox fans are SOOOO annoying.  I only have 2 or 3 sox fan friends that I can tolerate, because they know their stuff, give love to players that can play and don't just ride the R-sox bandwagon to ride it.

It's this feeling of entitlement Sox fans have that irks me, not to mention all the shit talking people who don't know what they're sayin do.  Yankee fans at least understand that they are to be hated because they spend more, and they relish in the fact.  I've gotten over that.  But the Boston Red Sox are "New England's team" so they draw from like 10 states, and pull in a fan base that includes pink-hat wearing girls who can't tell me anything about the team except that they're better than [insert random team name here].  That's just ridiculous.  Like last year I asked one girl who was particularly loudmouthed when the sox beat the a's in the back-to-back walkoff games in May <grumble, grumble> who the best pitcher on the Sox that year was, and she replied "Pedro Martinez."  I mean, COME ON!!

In reality though, the Sux pay a ton of money for superstars, and steal them from other teams.  I was so happy when the Yankees took Damon from the Sox, and I openly laughed in Sox fans faces when they complained. I said "SEE! Now you know how it feels."  The thing is, less than half the sox fans even knew that Damon came from Oakland, and less than half that knew he had played for Oakland knew that he originally came from Kansas City.

I will concede that the Red Sox do have some fans who know a lot about baseball, diehards in their own right, but the fact is, they are becoming the neo-Yankees.  I understand it on one hand, they feel they must spend to remain competitive with the Stankees, but their fans don't admit this.

Being in the greater-Boston area for the past 4 years was tough, for freaking 3 Patriots super bowls, including the snow-bowl AFC championship with the infamous (cough*bullshit*cough) "tuck" rule, and then the "miracle comeback" that the media worshipped oh so much.  It was these events that solidified my notion that Sox fans are not only bad losers, but they are bad winners.  And it's here that they earn my disrespect as an A's fan.

The icing on the cake was that damn movie Fever Pitch with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore, where they ran on the field after the WS victory in real life to film for the movie.  DUDE, Jimmy Fallon's originally from Brooklyn!!!!  This is a perfect testament to the bandwagon-ness that pisses me off so about the Red Sox.

I do hate the Yankees, but I can tolerate them more than the Red Sox.  If it were up to me, they'd both lose, even when they played each other.  Or maybe Bud Selig'd allow the game to end in a tie...that'd be fun.

I can tolerate the Giants much more than the Yanks or Red Sox, but I don't actively root for them.  Barroids is a joke; I hope he doesn't take the HR title from Aaron, just so the game's records retain some dignity.  I'll root for the Orioles in the AL East and the Padres in the NL west, but never the aforementioned teams.  I will occasionally go to games at SBC when I get free tix (my sister used to work for KNBR..it was a sweet deal for me), but I always wear my A's gear and try as hard as I can to get on Diamond Vision to display it.

But this is just me.  Aside from the Angels (DUH!), who do you guys hate (strongly dislike) most??

The Giants success hurts the A's and thier failure would be a huge benefit to the A's.

right on.
I think even Urban would agree with that.

But, as we saw this past year, success isn't the sole determinant of publicity. Now, if we could destroy KNBR, we would be on a level playing field.

Alas, I don't think I hate the Gnats that much, but would rather see them have the #1 or 2 draft pick year in year out and root against their success.

I do, however, hate the Yankees for spoiling baseball, the Red Sox for their awful fans, and the Nationals because they should still be in Montreal.

OK
I can see how you meant that. Then after the Angels I would say I hate the Redsox too. I find their fans obnoxious at the games. and for some reason (maybe kharmic ) they always sit right behind me at the game. It doesn't matter where I  sit. At an Oak/sox game they are always behind me.

Oh I've got a heirarchy of hatred.
  1. Angels. No question, the most hated. Arte Moreno is Sen~or Steinbrennero, and the two division championships are only slightly more galling than the WS rings that would have been ours if we hadn't had Billy Koch pitching the 9th in the 2002 ALDS. The phrase "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" just makes me add contempt on top of hatred.
  2. Yankees. The nation's most obnoxious fans, bar none, and being able to put up a $200M payroll is just irksome. It's clear they don't have a World Series-caliber team, but as soon as they miss the playoffs, it's possible they'll drop out of the #2 spot. They'll never leave the top 5, though.
  3. Red Sox. The nation's 2nd most obnoxious fans. Whatever pity they once had is gone, and all that's left is a bunch of obnoxious Red Sox fans.
  4. Rangers. Divisional rival dislike, plus the whole Frank Francisco incident. Just a couple players, yes, but Showalter trying to get a forfeit out of HIS player attacking a fan during a playoff chase is just absolutely loathsome.
  5. Giants. They've fallen a bit, as I've paid more attention to them in the course of doing my blog. Mostly because I have SUCH fun mocking them :)
  6. White Sox. The most annoying fans west of Jersey, and they have an unreasoning hatred of the A's given how we've absolutely mutilated them over the last 5 years.
  7. Mariners. The ineptitude of their front office has made them laughingstocks of the division, and I forsee little change, in this.
  8. Cardinals. Leftover rivalry from my old Cub-fandom. Distance and Mulder have both muted this dislike.
  9. Marlins. I know about the post-WS team blowups and all, but I don't think Marlin fans really appreciate the 2 WS rings this 13 year-old team has won them.
  10. Orioles. Because I hate the fact that Tejada has to play for such a lousy team.

Agree and disagree
I'd like to say that although we have beaten the White Sox pretty bad, they're the ones with the rings. And I'll have to disagree with you saying that their fans hate the A's. I in fact know many Sox fans myself, given that I have family in Chicago, and none of them has mentioned disliking the A's. They are just mad at the Sox for always losing to us!

The Marlins, though... I think that's a good point. The Marlins won the world series twice just to be torn apart soon thereafter by owners and GMs. I feel bad for their fans!

Go A's!

9 & 10...
I agree with 1-5 (except switch the yanks and r-sox), but 6-10 I'm not so sure with.  I can understand the divisional hate, and hating the Chi-Sox for recently winning (though it's nice that we've crushed them in recent history), but I don't really get are numbers 9 and 10. Starting from the bottom up:
  1. Orioles: I root for the orioles for the very reason you 'hate' them.  Tejada made a choice to go there, and his 'griping' (in whatever form it really was) made me only like him/the team less.  But in reality, he was the biggest reason I've rooted for them in past years.  Simply stated, I'll never root for the Sox/Yanks.  This year, while I might have rooted for the Blue Jays, they're turning into neo-Yanks as well, so they're not an option.  And the D-Rays? While I like guys like Aubrey Huff and Rocco Baldelli, I've just never gotten into D-Rays baseball.  Thus, I'm left with the Orioles.  It's hard to hate them because they're lousy; if anything this makes me feel for their fans and want them to succeed.
  2. Marlins: The Marlins, I have a little respect for, because they go about their business in an unconventional way.  This is the south beach version of the A's, in many ways.  The only way they can compete is to put together strong teams and then blow the team up after 1 solid run every seven years.  They are handcuffed by the high spenders and rather than compete every year like the A's do, they take their shot.  I respect that, and actually, the Marlins are already gearing up for their next run in 2011.  If this is what the A's were forced to do, there would undoubtedly be some people on a site like this heralding these moves.  Also, IMO, it's tough to hate a team with no real fan base.
Good list though; interesting to see.

Yankees....far and away
There are a number of sports teams which I can be deeply excited about rooting against, teams which I dislike so much that no matter whom they're playing, I root for their opponent.

In baseball, the team that fits into that category is the New York Yankees.

I've never really felt the deep hatred of the Giants.  Total indifference better describes my feelings at this point (and I had no trouble rooting for them against the Angels).

And I kind of like the Red Sox <ducks objects thrown at head>....I have some excuses: my grandpa was a huge lifelong Red Sox fan, and I went to college in the Boston area. And, most importantly, they're the anti-Yankees.

Actually, the true test of one's hatred for a franchise is what you feel about them when they suck. Just like real fans stick with a team through thick and thin, real anti-fans keep their hatred up, even when the team is losing. Even when they're down (which admittedly is not very often) I can't stand the Yanks.  The teams in  other sports that I feel similar hatred for are the L.A. Lakers and Dallas Cowboys.  Like the Yankees, I hate 'em no matter how good or bad they are.

On the other hand, teams like the Dodgers, the Mets, the New York Knicks, the New York Giants, and the Washington Redskins I can't stand when they're good, but I have a hard time keeping the hate when they aren't winning. I guess I'm a fair-weather anti-fan of them.

"fair-weather anti-fan"
Nicely put, though I can't agree with your "sort of liking the sox" based on your going to college there.  At least you have your grandpa's soxdom to fall back on, or you might be in danger of a chair from Frank Francisco...err...from me.

OK, j/k, but seriously, I can't stand the geographic transplant fans, especially for a period as short as college.  I saw WAY too many people jump on the Sox bandwagon back in '04-- people that had hometown teams of their own.  To me that's like selling your soul and taking a crap on your home team's head, essentially saying "you're not good enough."

One of my Red Sox fan buddies (from Amherst, MA, so I can understand/respect how he likes them) and I were having a conversation about allegiances and while he understood what I was saying, especially in relation to the new strand of Sox fans, he decreed that "Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for the house in blackjack."  While true, the sox are a close second and, in my opinion, are as much 'the house' as the Yankees these day.

For a while now, I've thought about writing a diary on the subject of "qualifying" as a fan of a team; how long one has to watch games, follow the team and in some cases, live in an area before becoming a member of the team.  Now, this isn't a perfect science yet, but my buddy and I agreed that to join the ranks of a team that hasn't been historically mediocre (aka teams other than the Royals, Orioles, D-Rays, etc.) one must actively follow his or her team for around 5 years, so as to avoid the 4-year college problem.  If you want to switch allegiances (in cases like that of CHFDigital) from one franchise to another, there can only be horizontal or downward movement on the "success" scale.  AKA, it is acceptable to move from a franchise that has had more or around the same amount success as the new franchise, so long as you're not switching allegiance from like the Cincinnati Reds to the St. Louis Cardinals...or from the Royals to the White Sox.  But to go from the Yankees to the A's, or the Braves to the Mets is alright by me.  Simply put, you have to earn your upward mobility with one franchise.

by rungood on Jan 30, 2006 1:08 AM PST up reply actions

Just to Clarify...
I was an A's fan throughout college. And when I went to Fenway to see Oakland play, I rooted loudly for the A's (a dangerous thing in the Fenway bleachers).  In fact, at Fenway I saw Dave Stewart's first start for the A's (who knew at the time he'd become the key to that rotation?).

But when the A's weren't there, I'd root for the Red Sox. Again, Soxdom goes way back in family, so this wasn't a brand new thing for me.  I didn't just adopt them 'cause I was there in college (in fact, I went to grad school in NJ, and I was never remotely tempted to like the Mets or the Phillies...let alone the Yankees!).  And there's nothing fairweather about my attitude toward the Sox.  I feel fairly positive about them no matter whether they're winning or losing (unless they're playing the A's, of course, in which case they're as much the enemy as any other team is).

So I totally agree with you about adopting teams out of convenience.

by GreenNGoldSooner on Jan 30, 2006 2:50 PM PST up reply actions

Your rooting for the sox is understandable
for sure, and the second after I clicked "post," I realized that I had made the mistake of not clarifying that it was a general "you" that I was using while typing, not at all a personal attack on your or team allegiance!  Sorry if there was confusion, your post just got me thinking about a more general topic that I'd been talking to my buddy about.

Hearing your personal story is awesome, though, and I think I feel the same way toward the Giants as you do to the Red Sox.  My dad grew up rooting for them, and even though we're both ardent A's fans now, we still like to see them do well-- just not as well as the A's.  The '89 series was a perfect example of this; we were so stoked to have both of our area's team there, and were even happier when the A's kicked the crap out of the Giants.  We were actually at Game 3 of the series-- the Earthquake game-- and that was an experience unto itself.

Some people might say my lack of total hatred toward the Giants is a travesty, but we're all entitled to our own opinions; I haven't forgetten that, even if my original reply to you came off as if I had.  Sorry again if I came off as a bit of a jerk, I didn't mean it, I swear!

I hated the whole curse saga. I hate how Red Sox fans often (not always) give me crap in my own ball park. I hate how contrived their rivalry with the yankees is. I've been to two yankee red sox games and i just had to root against boston. Oh yeah, I hate boston!!! easily the most overrated city I've ever been to. At least people in seattle know their city isn't world class. bostonites have the audacity to be stuck up.

Red Sox.
For non-divisional? Definitely the Red Sox. Used to be the Yankees, but I've become slowly numb to them over time -- hypersaturation of hatred, there's just nothing UNEXPECTED with them.

Plus, I've had a LOT more bad experiences with Red Sox fans in recent years. They fill me with rage. The team and their jackassness fills me with rage. The front office's weird BB-stalking fills me with rage (they tried to steal ERIC KARROS from us, man! ERIC KARROS). And just about everything else about them. Guys who have no respect for their team like Manny bother me -- be wacky, be weird, be a jerk, but don't put being a dumbass above playing the game and playing for the team.

The warped world that many fans live in, where it's only them and the Yankees and therefore we should pity their payroll, bothers me.

And the large amount of worshipping coverage on ESPN. And the whole ALDS with the A's fiasco (GRAR). And Arroyo's hair. The list goes on.

Angels hate would still beat that, though. :-)

Ten Reasons to Hate the Red Sox
Boston was the last team in baseball to integrate a FULL 12 YEARS after Jackie Robinson debuted with Brooklyn.  (Oakland native and San Francisco Seal Pumpsie Green was the first African-American player for the Red Sox in 1959).

Billy Beane would not, under any circumstances whatsoever, wear a gorilla suit.

Game 6 of the `75 series is the most overrated baseball game of all time.  Go FOUL!!!

Peter Gammons.

Despite their revisionist memory, Boston fans and press HATED the greatest hitter of all time, Ted Williams.  And they consider themselves "educated" fans?

Curt Schilling.  Let it Bleed.

The "Green Monster".....coverd for the vast majority of it's history in cigarette and soap advertisements.

As you mentioned....."Fever Pitch." Worst...baseball...movie....ever.

"Pre-distressed" Boston ball caps.

And of course...they traded the greatest baseball player of all time so their owner could pay  for  "No No Nannette" on Broadway.

Of course, I could come up with 1000 reasons to hate the Yankees....that's just too easy.

by Mission1929 on Jan 29, 2006 6:16 PM PST reply actions

well said.
my favorite (and perhaps the most applicable):
"Pre-distressed Boston ball caps"

So true.  I mean you are so eager to join the bandwagon that you have to buy a hat you didn't even break in yourself?  It's commercialization of fandom to a freakish level, and before I know it, I'll begin seeing Boston hats over here in Europe alongside the Yankee gear that people wear without even knowing what it means...

BUT! 4 surprising MLB-related things have happened to be since moving to Europe:

  1. In the British Museum, I saw a girl with an A's hat!  I was sooo excited, but too bad she didn't speak English....my excitement waned after that.
  2. Here in Estonia I saw an Estonian guy wearing a  brand new, pretty sweet Devil Rays jacket. (who knew I could use "pretty sweet" and "Devil Rays" in the same sentence?!)
  3. I also saw a guy in like a mid-80's nylon Mariners jacket (don't think he meant it as a throwback though)
  4. There is, unfortunately, an exorbitant amount of NYY stuff that people have brought back here from other countries, and the worst part is that I don't think these people even know that they're wearing the hat of a baseball team... alas, I wish I had an A's cap for everyone of them, so I could trade for and dispose of their Yankee gear...

Boston got way too little grief for the pathetic spectacle of uniformed players leading grade school cheers, with drunk-fan-style masking tape signs, from their own dugout, in the middle of play.  This embarrassing, bush league display perfectly captures why the BoSox tower above the Yanks in my pantheon of hate.  The Yankees, arrogant and privileged though they may be, at least comport themselves with class.  The Red Sox and their fans, in stark contrast, revel in their classlessness.  And always have, as I understand it.

I used to root for the Sox over the Yanks,
but now, partly because of the "miracle comeback" but moreso because of the bad attitude of Sox fans, I root for the Yankees just to piss the sux fans off.  It pains me to say this, but I actually take full credit for the Red Sox comeback, and I'm sorry.

In the '04 series, I made the choice to root for the Yankees.  It was a turning point for me, as I'd always rooted against them no matter who they were playing before.  But Boston fans had just gone too far.  Then, when it got to be 3-0 and all the Yankee fans were shit-talking about how great they were, I decided to switch my allegiance just so the Sox would make it at least competitive and shut some of them up.  And we all know what happened then...

Now if only the Yanks could have resigned Aaron Boone, gimpy leg and all, to jack another walk off.  Seriously though, I was watching the game with Red Sox and Yankee fans in '03 when Boone hit that walkoff and I just laughed and laughed out loud when I saw the joy on their faces melt into anguish, and I really didn't feel bad about doings so because of how the Sox fans had acted when they beat the A's in the first round of the playoffs.

There is no entitlement in baseball, and Sox fans need to realize this.  Get over yourself Boston.

Going on the ESPN boards, you learn a lot about fanbases. Boston's fanbase is scum.

Well, its maybe not just that. The "True" Boston fans are kicked out of the way by the bandwagoners who know nothing, but have either more time or money to spend.

My Hatred Rank-O-Meter:

  1. Boston RedSox
  2. New York Yankees
  3. Anahiem Angels
  4. San Fransisco Treats (I mean, Santa Rosa... I mean, Giants!)
  5. Los Angeles Dodgers
  6. Minnesota Twins
  7. Atlanta Braves

My list...
1. Red Sox:
- One of my favorite quotes from ESPN (on their Misery Index, regarding the Chicago White Sox): "You know what we admired about the White Sox during all those decades without a championship? Unlike Red Sox fans, they had the decency to keep their suffering to themselves."

Link to Misery Index:

  • Manny Ramirez
  • David Ortiz
  • Derek Lowe
  • Whining. Whine whine whine. They called New York the "Evil Empire", when the Sox were right behind the Yankees in terms of spending... and evil. Cubs and Sox fans had/have it worse, but somehow, Sox fans always felt entitled to being more abused. I really wondered what was going to happen if they ever won. Sox fans would have nothing to complain about.
  • Curt Schilling... the sock... and he feels he needs to take every chance to express his political beliefs. Easily, my least favorite MLB player
2. Yankees: This has kinda numbed over the years. But the Giambi play... oh that still burns. Jason Giambi on Letterman: "Have you BEEN to Oakland?"... Yankees fans are as arrogant as Sox fans are annoying

3. Angels: Pick a freaking name. You get Anaheim. There is already a team in LA. Deal with it. The Rally Monkey. Wow... just... do I even need to digress? Mike Scoscia. Ugh.

Texas is starting to get up there, especially with Showalter at the helm.

What about the Twins?
One of my least favorite teams is the Twins. Here's why:
  1. They always complain about being a "small-market team." Hello?! Look at the A's! The Twins need to stop trying to pity themselves and be glad that the only team thats good in their division is the White Sox.
  2. They have a trash bag for an outfield fence. Wow, Torii Hunter... that amazing home run rob must have taken a lot of guts.
  3. Their ceiling is white... how stupid is that?? Didn't they know that the ball is white also?
A few other teams I hate include:
  1. Red Sox ("We're the idiots... Look how tough Curt Schilling is, he pitches with a bloody ankle.")
  2. Angels. Seeing Francisco Rodriguez blow that save against the A's (the one where he dropped the ball) was the ultimate reward.
  3. Giants. There are Giants fans everywhere, and what for? If they beat the A's (which is quite rare), people will be giving me crap about it for weeks.
Any additional reasons to hate the Twins or another team I mentioned?

by scutaro is CLUTCH on Jan 29, 2006 6:53 PM PST reply actions

Dude
Don't hate on the Twins just because their owner is a cheap miser. All those reasons you listed aren't intrinsic to the Twins' fanbase or organization- they're all the result of the actions of one heartless man who happened to buy the team.

The Red Sox on the other hand are despicable from the grass-roots up.

Yankees
The Yankees are clearly my most hated team...Since I'm in a Strat-O-Matic league with all Yankee fans,I wouldn't say all Yankee fans are evil. Being on the East Coast, I don't have any particular dislike for the Giants or Angels. I used to like the Red Sox(being a Yankee rival)but the teams bush behavior in the 2003 playoffs disturbed me.

I hate the Giants.
I've always hated the Giants.

I first started following baseball as a 7 year old in 1987.  Although the Giants were going to the playoffs that year, I became a huge A's fan because of McGwire and that awesome rookie campaign he had.  I started collecting baseball cards for the sole purpose of getting his 1987 Topps rookie card (although he had an Olympic Team card a couple years earlier).

At that time, the A's were coming into their own dynasty period, and I held no animousity towards the Giants.  Hell, I rooted for them to join us in the World Series, only on the condition that they lose shamefully, which of course they did.

But in the late 90's when financial disparity exlpoded, the seeds of my discontent were sewn.  I think most A's fans can identify with that sentiment.  And although the Giants weren't a big market team, they certainly ruled Northern California.  They were the ones who drew all the fans, who were on the local sports radio station, who broadcast their games on channel 2 instead of 36 (although we had 4 sporadically), who were handing out 42 million dollar contracts before they were fashionable, and to rub it all in, they were building a brand new jewel of a stadium right on the Bay.

In the Winter of '98 I came back home after being at school for a few months and there was a new sports station on 1050 AM.  They were mainly talking about the Raiders (and John Rocker, I remember) but the fact that they were talking Oakland sports suggested that the A's might actually get a local sports station.  But of course, that never happened.  KNBR, acting on behalf of the Giants (as partial-owners) decided that instead of using this station to capture the  Oakland sports market, it would be more profitable  if it just mirrored KNBR and their Giants, 49er, and Raider coverage.

It was a moved designed to lift the Giants up a bit by keeping the A's down.  The Giants might not have been complicit in it, but they sure as hell benefitted from it.  And you can bet that if KNBR owned a piece of the 49ers, they they would've done the same shit to Raiders.

It's ridiculous that the A's have been this good for the last 6 years and they are still floating from station to station, all because KNBR banished them to the Country/Golden Oldies/Christian Stations.

So maybe I should rephrase my first statement...I hate the Giants/KNBR.

I Just Can't Hate the Giants
I find them too sad to hate.

They only have 23 actual fans (who all live in Daly City) and exist only at the whim of their corporate masters/pimps, companies like Oracle and Diamond Nuts.

Worst of all, I don't think anyone associated with the Giants realizes that they haven't won a damn thing since they moved from New York...not just since poor, sad Barry's been around....we're talking almost 50 years.  Talk about a curse.....

The Giants are too pathetic to actually hate.

Teams to hate....hmmmmm
Well, the fans I hate the most are Red Sox.  Someone mentioned that a few bandwagoners blow  it for the "real" fans......let me dispel that idea.  They are all 100% bungholes.  Every last alcoholic one of them.  Every game I have seen with red sox fans involved were populated by kerosene breathed, culturally challenged, substance abusing morons.  These were the "good fans".  It went downhill from there.....some were exposing themselves to urinate in plastic beer bottles because they were to drunk to actually crawl to a restroom.....and it's probably a good thing because someone would surely recognize them for what they are and flush them.  And this has happened in my experience more than once.  What is it about New England that screws up the human genome?  Ted Kennedy is an icon....that should speak volumes about the collective intelligence of the entire state of Mass.  The red sox themselves are slightly above pathetic.

The teams I hate would have to be the Yankee's.  But in my experience the fans have suffered from only arrogance and obnoxiousness.  After witnessing red sox fan behavior, this was quite refreshing.

The Giants......well now, they are almost to pathetic to despise, but what the hell, I loathe them all the same.  But not in a respectful way.  I tend to view them more as syphylis infected, skid row geriactics, mental deviates.  Disgusting, but clearly only a danger to themselves.

yankees/red sox
i guess you have to ask yourself, when the two teams play, who do you root against (don't fool yourself, the mind always tricks you into rooting for one team or another in any contest).

that's the team you hate more.  so i'd say i hate the red sox more, because i always root for the yankees over them.  i just like seeing them lose to the yankees i guess.  and i'm a big jeter fan.  perhpas he's overhyped, but he just plays the game right.  arod is another story.  but when i think about the team they had in they're hayday, jeter, posada, tino martinez, riviera, scott b, petite, wells, o. hernandez, bernie williams and so on, it's hard not to appreciate those guys as individuals. not to get all yankee fan, but i have a ton of respect for those guys as players.

giambi and arod not so much.  i'm convinced that nobody likes arod.  this bit about the world baseball classic sealed it to me.  he's torn between two countries.  my ass.

I hate the Y#@kees the most
out of tradition.  They were definitely the most hatable team in my childhood.  And I really hate their bandwagon fans, with the few exceptions being lifelong fans from the NYC area.

But the "other evil empire", the BoSox, have for me risen to nearly the same hate level.  Their young fans REALLY suck (many of the old ones suck too but at least they've paid some serious dues).  I had a bunch of young RSox fans behind me at one of the A's home losses last year, and they were so obnoxious.  They were totally dissing all the A's, and the fans around them.  It was a testament to our fans that we didn't give them the treatment any similarly obnoxious fans of another team would get at Fenway.

And you can throw that crap that they're "more knowledgable fans" out the window, that's just more "B.S."  When I talk to BS or Y@#kee fans, I always know more about their team than they do.  I'm not impressed.

PS  I also used to hate the Mets (along with the A's I'm an equally big Pirates fan), but my hate has dwindled since the eighties.
