Recaps of Urban (1:30pm) and Macha (5:00pm) on KNBR!! Help with recaps!

Hey guys,

I don't have much time to make this intro long, but Mychael Urban is on KNBR right now (1:30).

Macha will be on with the Razor and Mr. T at 5:00om tonight as well.

Listen live on KNBR.com!!

This is just a forum for people to post/discuss the on air conversations....especially for those who can't listen.

I'll do my best to transcribe but would love some help, particularly with the Macha interview, which I won't be able to listen to!!

-rungood

ARGH, it won't let me submit because it's under 300 words.  I'm really not trying to skirt the guidelines so I'll begin transcribing right now.

Urban:
It's a low risk, high reward deal.  Less than Jay Payton, who's making 4 million.

Urban thinks they'll get rid of Payton. "Tough to say whether or not he'll be out of Oakland before the season or as more time passes."

OK, on to the diary.

[Update at 2:12pm, 1/27/06 by rungood]: In addition to discussing/recapping Mychael Urban's appearance on KNBR, this thread will serve as a place to post about/discuss Ken Macha's interview on KNBR with the Razor and Mr. T. I can't do it since I'm 10 hours ahead of you guys, but I'd love to read your comments/highlights/lowlights. Thanks!! ~rungood

Bench
Urban finds it hard to believe that Beane will have $6million on the bench.  Figures that Payton will be sent somewhere, perhaps even Boston.

Not a lot of credit is given to
player development.  The A's do a lot with little money and that's why this year is an anomaly. (this is old news to AN readers)

The offseason started off
kinda messy, but the A's righted the ship and have turned this into a really successful offseason.

Getting Macha on board and all squared away allowed Billy to get to work and do what he's done.

Low risk, High rewards
Billy's never going to get the "perfect player."  But MB and Franky T were low risk, high reward guys.

They lost Rincon, which a lot of fans were happy about, and lost Durazo and Hatte, who were non-factors....sharon = <sob>

Keeping guys like Zito, and signing guys like Loaiza, FT, etc. points to the fact that they're going for the brass ring right now.

The A's are a complete team, BUT
-->there's one weakness that people are kind of glossing over: the bullpen.

It's good, but not great.  Kennedy is the only lefty, and Duke has back problems...people don't talk about this so much and it's not a big concern, but if there's any concern it's this.

"but it's largely 'picking nits.' " --> monkeyball is that you??

Urban asked about the starting rotation
Urban asked about how the A's SP-rotation shapes up, what the order is, but he brushes this off saying this only matters for the first few weeks of the season.  If he had to decide, he'd say:

Barry Zito = 1
Harden = 2
Loaiza = 3 (veteran status, career accomplishments)
Haren = 4 (more time than Blanton)
Blanton = 5 (not to be treated like a typical #5, however)

That's pretty cool that they're in the same group...I try to follow soccer/futbol, but Estonia's team is crappy.  The highlight last year was beating Latvia, but that's not saying much.

I'm an American, '05 college grad and am only in Estonia until July (doing a Fulbright scholarship).  I've been here since September and it's definitely been a change for me, from the 4-5 hour days in December to the -25 Celsius (-35 with wind chill) days last week.

I've resisted so far, but if anyone wants to check out my blog, hit up http://estonianwifi.blogspot.com (There's more about my project in the archives).  Ahh, shameless self-promotion... :)

We should organize a return to the bay a's party or something.  Maybe on a $2 weds, that is, if tickets aren't sold out way in advance.

i am already going through serious a's withdrawl, and it's only going to get worse in February, March, April, May, June and July.....argh, that's a long time.

By the way, I know there's an AN day and all, but do AN'ers ever just arrange to meet up to go to games on random days?  The Internet used to be super sketch like 10 years ago, but in a community like this, I'd be down to meet up randomly with folks I chat with on days when my friends are working/being lame.  God knows all your appreciation for/knowledge of the game is probably much higher than a lot of my friends...haha.

funny...
"I had an agent-- I have an agent..."

Billy and Macha didn't talk directly, the agent was pissed and Billy was pissed, but Macha was behind the scenes.  When $h!t didn't work out, Macha called Billy a week later and they talked and smoothed things out.

It was an emotional rollercoaster for Macha.

Agent is still working for Macha.

Ralph: "It Usually takes years of experience to become a closer.  Usually takes years of experience and facial hair and being a crazy man to be a closer..Street's got none of that!"

Tom asks him about the Walk off Sulk
against Anaheim.
How many players are even attentive enough to make that play?

Macha:  Very few.  Jason was alert enough to make that play.  To come in the clubhouse after that play was a tremendous feeling.  A lot of the players on this team play with that intensity.

<SIGH>  Good times!!!

About Huston... he has movement, velocity, and command. <Snicker>
Macha says Huston has had a tremendous upbrining.  If Macha asks him he could give him an inning or whatever, he responds "Yes, sir."

Now talking about the starting rotation.  Not bad to have Cupcakes as the 4th or 5th starter.  He pitched extremely well starting June.  Hopefully he will come back focused and in shape.  Hopefully he had a great off season and is ready to go.  Talks about the game in Tampa Bay.  <Shudder>  The 10 run first inning game.
He says Blanton is a very tough competitor.  As the season went on, his breaking ball got better... Credits Curt Young.

by AsGirl on Jan 26, 2006 5:20 PM PST reply actions

Here's my version of the interview...
(Excuse my writing, it's a rush job)

Can you tell us about the dynamics of the whole firing/hiring thing...

All I can is that Billy and I did not talk directly to each other until a week later.  My agent gave me good advice back in January, but then he and Billy didn't work it out (they were mad at each other).  The BB and I talked and we worked it out to the tune of a 3 year contract.

How disappointing was it to consider that you may never come back to the A's?

Last part of 05 was very tough - recaps Crosby, Harden fargaility etc..  I would have really missed the fans and the players had I not been able to come back.

Did you want to manage back in Pittsburgh?

That would have been starting all over back there.

Did you have any discussions with BB before MB came to the A's?

We had a conference call about it, scouting director, myself etc.  "Everybody's not an Angel, our clubhouse is such that we can absorb him etc.."

Tom and I talked with MB, he came across as extremely sincere...

We talked after the trade, and MB said he was excited about it after Chavez and Kotsay called him, but not before that.

Is this a deep team?

We will be carrying 11 pitchers with big league experience, excited about the depth.  Chance to get players plenty of rest.

Jay Payton trade rumors?  Payton would be willing to go back to Boston...

The teams not set yet, no sense in talking about who will be on the bench etc...  Now we have Saar"Loose" and Kennedy who can both spot start and be in the bullpen.  let's wait until the roster gets out in April, and then we'll talk about playing time etc.

Is there way you can explain the success of Huston Street, in order be a bona-fide closer it takes years of experience, certain mindset, a lot of facial hair.

Great stuff has something to do with it.  He's got movement, velocity, really tough on right handed hitters.  Has no fear, makeup is exceptional.

Starting rotation is looking pretty good, JB is pretty good 4th starter.

JB has got 4 pitches, FB, Curve, slider and change.  Walks very few ppl.  He's got enough savvy to get ground balls when he needs it.  Hopefully he'll come in focused, in shape and ready to go.  Always worried about young pitchers to repeat performance etc...

What turned JB around last year?

When I go to take him out of games, he looks at me like he wants to fight.  I credit Curt Young.

How's the karate?

Got my first degree in January.
