if you want season tickets
do it before Fan fest.

Fan fest is also day all single game tickets go on sale so buying before hand is advised.

Season Tickets
You should be able to purchase Season Tickets right now if you like.  IIRC individual game tickets will go on sale during FanFest.

While in a fanfest thread, I think I'll ask...
This'll be my first year going (woo!) and I was wondering if anyone could say more about it? What goes on, exactly? What's something a gal should keep an eye out for? Does buying single tickets there involve insaaane crowds (I think I'm gonna be unable to resist their siren's call)? Anything a first-timer should know?

Believe it or not,
I've also never been. I was wondering if any "AN groups" would form, or whether that makes sense for this event (I'm not sure how small or big it is).

if your into the Q & A
which is my favorite thing personally, get there early if you want a seat or view of the players.  At least a half hour early.

I havent been in a couple yrs since Im not in the bay anymore, but I heard the clubhouse tour is awesome.

If you purchase your season tickets you get a free ticket(s) to the fan fest.  They also sell tickets to the FanFest to the general public.

fan fest tickets
Well let's put it this way, I share two full season tickets and we got foru tickets to FanFest.  I would assume that they would also give out FanFest tickets to partial season ticket holders.

by skwid on Jan 3, 2006 7:21 AM PST up reply actions

They do send tix to mini-plan holders
Or at least they used to... but I haven't received my FanFest tix yet this year.  Have you or anybody) actually received yours?

No, not yet
I was considering calling them to find out when to expect them, but I thought it was still a bit early. I think if there is nothing posted or I don't get it by Monday, then I will call. I have not even seen it advertised that people can buy the tickets yet.

Fanfest FAQ...
Kyli - what happens:
A bunch of the players are just walking around, autographs free. Last year I got Melhuse, Kendall, Duke, Dan Meyer, Swish and Ellis, among others. If I would've been more coordinated, I could've gotten more. It was so exciting last year, RIGHT after I got off the BART overpass, I saw Melhuse, Thomas, Meyer and Bobby Smith (who went to AAA and I think got released). It was cool, great photo op.

They have separate autograph sessions, but you have to pay (I think it was 15 last year, but you get a group of like 4 players). To pay for the autograph sessions, get there EARLY. I think I got there about 30-45 mins before it started and I was SOL. They also have Q&A sessions where fans can ask the players ANYTHING. I can't recall exact questions off the top of my head, but Z has gotten some fairly spicy questions from female admirers.

Radio booths will be all over, and players do interviews there. They have clubhouse tours, of which I highly recommend, and a bunch of other stuff to do.

I don't know much about ticket buying, but I would bargain for insane crowds.

Naturally, keep your eye out for anyone in an A's uni. A couple years ago, I saw a real tall guy in an A's uni... and I was like... no... couldn't be... it WAS Mulder. I ran, dragging my little brother behind me, as fast as I could, but I was never able to catch up :-(.

So there ya go.

Nico - We should have some sort of AN gathering or something, not sure. Don't know how to work that, but yeah.

Kbaca - Nope, no season tix necessary. Any A's fan can come. Last year, admission was like $10, so it should be something of the sort this year.

And, for the kids...
My experience of Fan Fest is all about the kids - it's totally cool for them to get to go out and run around the field, and you can take pics as if they're catching a ball up against the outfield wall.

There are free games/events for the kids all over the field - bouncy jumpers, giant slides, obstacle courses, etc.  Sometimes long lines for these things, sometimes not so.

Ticket lines are very long.

Some sort of AN say hi thing would be great.

by lurkerD on Jan 3, 2006 9:03 AM PST up reply actions

yah, long lines
That is, sadly, my main memory of Fanfest. The events were packed.

Nicest memory is having fun bouncing off the outfield wall, being on the field.

Field was off-limits last year...
...but I don't remember why. That was the first time I'd seen that happen.  :(
"Don't go getting all Alexander Haig on me," Beane told Forst.

by Poppy on Jan 3, 2006 9:31 AM PST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure it was because
either the Raiders were still using the field or the field hadn't been made "ready" yet after the football season.  In any case, without the field fan fest is not nearly as much fun as everything is in the hallways and it is SO crowded.  I hope we'll have the field this year.

by indigo on Jan 3, 2006 4:55 PM PST up reply actions

Trust me the Raiders weren't using that field...
they haven't played in February since their SB loss to the Bucs.

by Zabat on Jan 3, 2006 11:03 PM PST up reply actions

Is it easy
to buy single game tickets at fanfest?  I have been told that the lines are horrendous for single game tickets. Is it easier to stay home and buy them online or over the phone?  With the seating capacity reduced how hard will it be to get opening day tickets at fanfest?

by alox on Jan 2, 2006 8:29 PM PST reply actions

I wish I could go to FanFest. :(
College gets in the way of so many baseball-related things. Anyway, like others have said, I would recommend the players Q&A sessions. Pretty funny stuff goes on with some of them. You can also watch on Diamond Vision if you want to sit in the Coliseum, but of course it's harder to hear. I can't really remember if you can go on the field during FanFest-- I'm thinking yes, but I could just be remembering something else. It's all so fuzzy. But that's also cool to do. Last time I went, a couple years back, we waited in line for the clubhouse tour, for a long time. In the years before that, you had to buy your tickets for it right away and you came back at a set time, but in '04 you just waited in line and basically walked through the clubhouse and stuff. But some of the guys had some stuff in their lockers, so that was cool. And you get to sit in the dugout.

Ok, that's all I can remember. Hopefully my information's not outdated. And I don't think I've ever gotten single game tickets at FanFest, so I don't know how the lines would be for that. <sigh> I'm so jealous of y'all who will get to go to this...

Keep your Eyes Open!
As many have said before, keep your eyes open!

Last year, I was coming into the coliseum and I litterally ran right into Mark Ellis!! I was in such a hurry to get a ticket for a picture with Bobby that I just basically bounced off Ellis, said "Oh! Sorry, Excuse me!" he was like, "that's ok" and I took 2 more steps and went "OH MY GOD!" But by that point he was already occupied with other fans. That is when I noticed about 3 other players standing just inside the gates. If I had known that before going in, I would have taken my time.

That is another thing, this year, I am going to take the day slower. I spent so much of last year running around chasing Bobby from event to event, that I didn't really sit back and enjoy the whole day for what it was. So my goal for this year is to take it all in, absorb it more and just simply enjoy it. It is such a great day!!

Dang, now I am all excited!! I want to go now!!

I have a Mark Ellis story too...
...but it's not as good as yours. ;) My dad and I were waiting in line outside the Coliseum for the first FanFest I dragged him to a few years back. Must've been '03. Anyway, someone drives past on one of those little carts, and I poke my dad and say, "Look, there's Mark Ellis!" He looks around and says, "Who?"

I have educated him much better since that point, but every so often when I see Ellis I ask my dad, "Wait, who's that?" Good times. ;)

My fave Mark Ellis moment...
Spring of '04 I took my students to AZ for Spring Training.  The A's arranged for us to meet their director of PR, watch the players work out, etc.  As we pulled in to the private parking lot, an Escalade pulled up behind us.  I said, "Hey kids, there's a player behind us."  The girls had made signs the night before, icluding one for Ellis that read "Can we kiss it and make it better?"  When Ellis got out of the car they got to show it to him, which was a big thrill for them.

For as long as they've had it, the A's have always scheduled Fanfest for a Saturday when I'm at work.  Usually it's in February on the weekend I have to take 35+ debaters to Stanford for a tournament.  This year it's in January, when I'll be taking my team to Emory.  Grrr.  The free tix I get as a season ticket holder just make it worse!

Resolved: that good pitching beats good hitting
I was an avid east coast high school debater back in my youth.  What school are you at?

I can do that ...
but I'm going to define beats as "creates more satisfied customers", pitching as "selling an item based on its merritts" and hitting as ...

I really hated it when people did that ...

by devo on Jan 3, 2006 6:28 PM PST up reply actions

I think I'll propose that to the topic committee.
When did you debate and for what high school?  I coach at College Prep in Oakland.  Debated there back in the day as well.  I'll bet that we know people in common.

More questions..
Do the A's still charge a ton for parking during Fanfest? And do the ticket windows for single-game tix open when Fanfest does, or do they open early? I'm curious how early to get there since it's gonna be a loooong morning of driving.

Last time i went...
was my first time and i had a blast.

Before the event i was waiting first in line for a free autograph signing by Erubiel Durazo that they were having for some radio station and i guess no one told Ruby cause he was headed in to the stadium when the radio station announced that he was here. So he turned round and started heading to the the stand.

Luckily for me Rich Harden and Danny Haren also joined him in coming to the stand.

I also met many other players.

I saw Mark Ellis just walking around the place casually till he got swarmed by fans.

It is a great event. My only advice is if you are looking to pay to get good autographsget there more then an hour early then line get insane and they sell out of the best players early.

Last year they had Rickey Henderson, Vida Blue, and Terry Steinbach signing.

Anyone know what former Athletics are coming this year?

Sigh...
I skip one day of checking AN and I miss the FanFest info!
Just this morning, I canceled a day-off request at work for that day JAN 28 so I could go to Tahoe on a different day :(

I wonder if I could cancel my cancellation? Now it seems like the off-season is flying by :)

2006 Promotions?
Does anyone know when the promotions will officially be posted?  I have prepaid for most of my fielder's choice ticket plan, but I haven't selected the games yet because I base it on the teams we're playing and promotions being offered (yeah, I'm a bobblehead fan).

by Rickeyfan on Jan 4, 2006 9:35 AM PST reply actions

No clue.
Last year, it was announced mid-February (though someone here had some info about some promotions before that, though, as I recall). They might want to announce it before Fanfest, though. Dunno.

I've never bought season tix...
But I'm planning on getting the 22-game plan. I'm guessing we don't have to pick the games right when we pay for them. I was going to wait for the promo schedule to come out too.

You don't have to ...
but the quality of your seats will likely decrease greatly after tickets go on sale to the general public ...

Yeah
I'm getting bleachers and I'm gonna pay for them prior to FanFest. So unless there are plans to make the bleachers non-general admission, I think I'm good.

LF Bleacher bum too
Soon to be on the 5th year in section 134/135 ... as long as they're not switching to assigned seating, I'm all good.  I applied my playoff refund towards this years tix, but they went up in price, so I think I still have about $35 outstanding.  I usually like to wait until the promos to pick 'em.  I like the little known secret that it's a 22 ticket plan and not a 22 game plan (s you can get 2 tix for 11 games if you have a friend to bring.

by Rickeyfan on Jan 4, 2006 1:07 PM PST up reply actions

Really?
You can do that from Day 1?

I thought you had to exchange them after the fact to make that happen ...

I may continue as a season ticket holder afterall ...

The reason ...
I have not been planning on renewing is because I'm planning to move up to Sac in the next month or three and I won't likely be able to make it to 20+ games this year ...

11 is probably doable.

by devo on Jan 4, 2006 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

better make sure first
I used to have the FC plan, and they told me explicitly that I had to pick 20 (at that time) games, not just 20 tix.

FC as 22 Ticket plan
The first year I had them, I was under the impression that it was a 20 game plan (which it still is officially).  The last three years, I had prepaid, but not committed to actual games.  Once the promo schedule is released, I go to the ticket office and select the games and # of tickets.  If I had to go to 22 games, it would get cumbersome (there really aren't that many games I want/can go to).  That and it'd be more expensive to bring along the girlfriend.  22 tickets works out to about 8 or 9 games we go to together (bobblehead, NY, Bos, SF, Ana), and a handful of games I go to myself when she can't make it.  I'm hoping the policy stays the same this yr.

fan fest story
three years ago i was at fanfest with my brother, wife, and a friend. zito was standing out in the open by the blood donor booth and nobody noticed. so i hurried over there and the booth assistant said that if you donate blood you could get barry's autograph. well my wife was filling out the paperwork like crazy (zito is her one crush i allow). in the meantime, zito is signing everything for us, my brothers glove, hats, baseballs, you name it. so i run over and tell my wife to hurry back over. but no, she wants to meet him and give blood. needless to say by the time she gave blood, barry left. she was crushed. i found a little humor in it but not her. the rest of the day she was upset. now it's a running joke with us when we go to fanfest. last year we got photos with hatteberg and swisher. it's a good time all and all, a bit crowded though.

Do You Think the Players Like Fan Fest?
Or do they think we're a bunch of insane dorks? I myself like insane dorks, but the players may be too cool for that.

by SportySpice @ Athletics Nation on Jan 4, 2006 6:47 PM PST reply actions

Well...
I bet rookies like Swisher and Blanton last year loved it because it is their first contact with this many fans, but i bet vets dont really like it or are numb to the whole experience.
