Eligibility:
Akinori Iwamura (AI) will become a free agent after the 2007 season (he will be 28). Iwamura has stated with the media and his fans many times his intentions and dreams to play in the MLB. His team, the Yakult Swallows have indicated that they will post AI after the 2006 season if he performs up to their expectations (and it only makes sense to post him, rather than just to lose him to FA).
I very much expect him to be in a MLB uniform by the start of the 2007 season.

AI has turned in some pretty impressive batting stats since age 20. He hits for power, and defensivly has won many gold gloves at 3B while with YS. The only thing concerning about AI's batting is that his KK:B isn't so hot, but if/when he comes to the MLB, I'm pretty sure he'll be a lot more protective of the batter's box than in the NPB (note: the NPB strike zone is much bigger than the MLB strike zone).

Iwamura fits nicely with an article posted the other day about the inevitable move of Chavez to first base ( Here (By BashBrothers89). His arm seems to be a growing concern, and it's hampering effect on his defense is worrying.

The A's currently don't have any noteworthy prospects at 3B in their farm system, so could Iwamura be a potential option? Personally, I don't think Chavez will move anytime soon, but the idea of Chavez moving after 2 more years at 3B to another infield position, one perhaps much easier on his arm, doesn't seem too far fetched to me.
Iwamura could be an effective replacement for Chavez at 3B (or possibly, 2B)-- and at the very least, a good platoon player.

(pt.2) Yabu signs with Rockies.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Yabu news for anyone interested.
According to Japan Ball
Keiichi Yabu signed a minor league contract with the Rockies and will attend Spring Training.
I'm very happy Yabu was able to find another team, maybe he'll get a chance to be a starting pitcher on a team where it's starting rotation isnt' so solidified.

Yabu brought something different to the A's in terms that it opens up the doors to the A's looking to other options other than American/South American born players. Yabu also for the first time represented the under-represented Asian populace in the bay area in major league baseball.

(Also should be noted, today Shiggy Hasegawa, formally of the Mariners, announced his retirement from baseball.)

Hope everyone is well. The season is just around the corner-- aren't pitchers gonna report soon?

Shigetoshi retiring???
Damn.... I love that guy.  Coolest name in baseball over the last 10 years, and a great guy....

yeah
Shiggy was a great guy, as well as a good player. He was one of my favorite players, too. He holds the highest number of games pitched in by a Japanese player.

Yomiuri (JP).

I was actaully thinking that he still had stuff left in the tank-- he's younger than Yabu (pretty sure), and his numbers aren't bad at all for someone his age. I guess he wanted to end on a high note.

wow thats weird
I didnt realize that Shiggy was old enough to consider retirement. When I was in the Navy I was stationed up in Washington, and I would pay attention to the Mariners because they were the only games always on T.V.( dont get me wrong I still went out to Safeco everytime Oakland came to town and talked mad shit to all the Seattle fans). Shiggy was one of the players that I really liked on the Mariners, he was always really strong coming out of the bullpen. Man to think back on the years I was up there 2001-2003 Seattle was a really strong ballclub, man what the hell happend?

it also should be noted
The Shiggy is the same age is 3 other japanese born pitchers:
Hideo Nomo, Yabu, and Shingo Takatsu.

There seems to be a big wave of aging JP pitchers in the MLB right now. I wonder if Shiggy's retirement signals anything for Takatsu. Personally, I think he'll give it one more season.
(H. Ishii also went back to Japan to play (he last played on the Dodgers/Mets... when will the next great wave of Japanese players come? Will it be when Matsuzaka comes over? The last generation seems to be making it's exit now.)

Thanks for the update!
I went over to the Rockies website to see where their AAA team is -- Colorado Springs, not too bad a place as minor league towns go if the Yabu family has to spend a little time there.  And there are lots of Nikkeijin in Denver, I understand. A guy can probably find a decent sushi joint.
Anyway, the Rockies MLB.com writer points out that they have four relievers (including BK Kim)who are expected to be at the World Baseball Classic and thus miss a fair chunk of spring training, increasing the chances for Yabu and other invitees to impress the club. So once again, gambatte, Yabu-san!

Good job
I love these reports, you have really done your homework. Unfortunately, I think AI will be out of our league when he is posted. I can't see the A's winning a bid anytime soon. Maybe if/when we get a new stadium, things will change. Might as well start looking at those top NPB rookies and prospects...

Likely, no...
We have quite a few corner Outfield prospects comming up, Swisher/DJ/Barton logjam at 1B/DH already.

It should be noted...
that I do these dairys so readers can evaluate the different options that are available (or will become available) in the future. Most of the these players I agree would be hard to land because of their caliber and the type of money they would be able to draw in-- I would do a diary on a player like Yabu or someone who is kind of a "diamond in the rough" or a Durazo-type deal, but those are hard to find because:

a) these are players who have publically and repeatedly voiced their ambitions to come to the MLB as soon as possible, even if it means posting next season.

b) not all players wish to play in America.

Concerning money, not all players will be persued like American free-agents, because I believe there is a slight mistrust in some clubs of Japanese players' ability to convert to the MLB style of play (i.e. Kaz Matsui (NYM)), and a bias towards American players (which makes sense, because you get limited chances to watch the player first hand).

Yeah, just thought I'd put that out there-- the variables, I think.

Go A's! =)
