Everybody is so positive...

about the 2006 A's...  and, so am I.  I think the A's will win the division.  I think we may even make it past the first round in the playoffs. That's not good enough for me, though... I've seen 'em win the World Series 4 times (shoulda won it 6 times, but... oh well, I sound like a spoiled Yankee fan now).  Nevertheless, after watching the excrutiating exit in the first round in 4 of the last 6 years, I'm sure, making it to the ALCS would be good enough for many young A's fans.  Not for me.  I don't want any weak links on this team.  But, I think we have some.

Who is the weak link on this team?  Personally, I think it's in the bullpen.  Witasick gets my #1 vote... Kennedy my #2.  Kennedy will probably lose more games for us this year, but that's only because he'll see more innings.  I figure Witasick as our '06 Yabu, after Macha realizes (too late) that he can't get anybody out.

Hopefully, Jairo is ready.

So, who do you think is the weak link?  I left out Zito and Harden and Haren and Blanton, because nobody here would vote for them.  But, feel free to write them in, if you have a good reason.

I've included Frank Thomas... that's how sure I am that he will be our DH.

Perhaps Witasick or Kennedy...or Kendall
The thing is, they aren't terrible either.  If they are primarily used to eat innings in games that are already basically over, then they won't do much damage.  If we find ourselves in a situation like last year, where Kennedy is used as a Harden substitute, then we are skrooed.

Kendall could be a weak spot.  I just hope that last year's performance was an anomaly and not the beginning of a career decline.

If Thomas comes and bats 4th...
behind Chavvy, this team won't really need to worry about what Kennedy and Witasick do (until the playoffs).  If we don't score runs, Kennedy and Witasick may well cost us a playoff berth.

bud, you forgot macha
I like this team going into '06. If they get Frank and he plays up to his potential the lineup will be well balanced. The SP staff is stacked and one of the best in MLB. I suppose there is an arguement that the BP could be slightly improved but it appears solid. The bench looks better than most years.

My weakest link is Macha. For my money Kenny has yet to prove that he is the type of Championship caliber manager that will win the team games and take them to the Promised Land. This may change but if it smells like pig, and snorts like pig, and tastes like pig, well........

How is Witasick
a weak link as the fourth right-handed reliever out of the bullpen? Which team has a fourth right-handed reliever out of the bullpen who is superior? I'm not a Witasick fan and would be very concerned if he were the set-up man, and a little concerned if he were the next guy. But as one of the last guys out of the bullpen, he is a luxury, not a liability.

Weak link right now? "Everyday health." Chavy, Kotsay, Crosby, Harden, et al are only as good as their ability to play, and play at 100%.

Witasick as our 06 Yabu?
If that's our weakest link, we're going to be fine...Yabu had zero MLB experience, while Witasick could very well be a setup man on many MLB teams. If he's employed behind Street, Calero, and Duke, then he won't even see many chances to screw up. Personally, I think our bullpen is almost as strong as our rotation. The weak link is what it was last year- streakiness of our batting lineup, and injuries that impact it.

by JCase on Jan 18, 2006 8:11 AM PST reply actions

I totally agree...
that the wink link of the A's in 2006 is the streakiness of our lineup.  Much like the Whitesox, if our pitchers and hitters get hot at the right time (read Sept and Oct) I can see this team making a run at the. whole. f-ing. thing.

Witasick and Kennedy
I have a feeling Witasick might turn out to be our weakest player, but not necessarily our weakest link. Like Yabu last year, if he looks like he's struggling, he just won't see the time to hurt us too much. Kennedy, though, I do see as a risk. He was good in the 'pen last year before starting, but I have a slight worry about his new position as the possible only lefty, the consequential tag of "specialist" he's going to get, and the timing of his inclusion in games because of it. It's not something I'm really worried about, but if anything's going to blow up in our face it might be that. I'd feel more comfortable with a Flores or someone in tow to give us an option. I guess with all the talk about depth this offseason, the one place we don't have it has to be the liability.

Kennedy is a proven MLB pitcher
and I'm sure he will be utilized properly- if he doesn't want to be a LOOGY, we have Flores and Rheinecker who can be brought up whenever. I really like Flores' appearances last season, and I think with Saarloos as a longman/extra starter, Kennedy may become expendable. BTW, great bullpens don't need lefties- look at Anaheim...

Well, painful as my saddle sores are, I'm gonna climb back on Monkeyball's Hobbyhorse #2: Our Underperforming Offense (#1, of course, being Our Inflexible Roster Management With Only 21 Players, which seems to have been addressed by Beane this offseason).

I think the offense is the weak link on the '06 A's as the roster currently stands. It's definitely upgraded from '05, but it's still, IMHO, a league-average-at-best offense.

Even if we add Thomas, he's still likely to only give us <300 PAs -- and he could, despite our expectations, not be able to maintain his previous OPS levels.

My List
  1. Chavy's unfathomable cold streaks when he can't seem to make contact with BP fastballs down the middle of the plate. He was like that for what, about a third of last season?
  2. Kendall's inability to throw out runners.
  3. Crosby's bat. Let's face it, we rely on this kid to be a big part of our offense. If he dosen't settle down at the plate in clutch situations there's going to be a lot of outs when he tries to pull a pitch that's on the outer half of the plate.
  4. There is no No. 4
  5. Because it's an odd number.

#4 and 5 relievers
don't often get the opportunity to blow many games. Assuming Huston, Duke and Calero stay healthy, they will be excellent middle relievers.

This team does not have any holes. Its only weakness - if you can call it that - is the teamwide balance. We have good and very good players at every spot on the roster - but aside from a completely healthy Rich Harden, none of them are top end players.

Offense
Got shut out 12 times, 12 times, no offense at all in the beginning of the year, no clutch hits when it mattered most. Bullpen would be worriesome if Witasick becomes the next Arthur Rhodes.

Seeing the mention of Rhodes
It keyed me into realizing I had my first A's dream that I can ever remember having the other night.  And Rhodes was the main focus of the dream (or nightmare).

Though I cannot remember the plot of the dream, it did feature...get this, Arthur Rhodes on the mound wearing a Chinese "coolie" hat..one of those conical hats and it was green with the A's logo on it.

I had a dream too
It was opening day, and Zito was in the mist of a no-hitter (not sure why it wasn't a perfect game. Dream didn't get that detailed). This was in a ballpark that WASN'T the 'Net. The 3B-line had a large, red-bricked multi-story building which was also a mall, and the outfield was reminiscint of a playground park in that there was no "end" besides the street (no walls or bleachers or anything).

Then the batter launches one to LF, and it seemed as if the no-hitter was gone. The left fielder runs like crazy for what seems like miles, and at the last moment stretches out his glove in a last-ditch attempt to flag the ball down. There's the familiar sound of ball-into-glove, and the player looks bewildered at his glove to find the ball safety tucked inside. The man turns around and starts to run back to the infield with the ball held up high for the world to see. The crowd starts chatting his name, and banners are thrown out of the windows of the building on the 3B-line.

The name on the back of the jersey and on those banners? The one and only.

Bradley.

Now, if there is any indication to this dream being a preminition, it is that the first part of the dream (non-A's related) became true a few days after - I didn't get the girl (I won't get any furthur than that!).

by Kaiser99 on Jan 18, 2006 2:21 PM PST up reply actions

Hmmm. Elaborate dream there.
I think dreams reflect the reality of the objective world outside of us that we see and experience with our senses...then that reality is bent and separated much like light through a prism with the subjectiveness of our brain that draws certain conclusions in the actual event of the dream....then afterwards in the interpretation.

In Zathura..
..as a boy is playing catch with his dad, his older brother dives in front of him and steals the ball, saying, "Ohhhh!!  Milton Bradley with the game saving catch!"  So, I think you may be on to something.

As a side note, that movie focused a little too much on the A's and their heartbreaking series with Boston a few years ago.  Enough already!  Get back to the kids screaming at each other.

Ellis, not a weak link, but...
Every player that A's have have weaknesses that people usually point out, whether mental or physical.  But the one person everyone seem to think the world of and overly call "underrated" is Mark Ellis.

I read some where his BABIP (batted ball in player) average, which is usually due to luck, was unusually high, and that appears to be true:
http://www.fangraphs.com/splits.aspx?playerid=1443&position=2B_SS&page=7&type=full&s plit=lr
see where dan johnson and Chavez are, and compare them to league average (blue line):
http://www.fangraphs.com/comparison.aspx?playerid=1443&position=2B_SS&page=7&playerid2=2 167&playerid3=906

This means Ellis probably will not be as good offensively as he was at the end of 05 next year.  Not a weak link, but not that great.

Harden --- What happens if he's hurt?
The Chron reports today that Harden may not be ready for spring training and may not be ready for the opening of the season. The guy can never be a weak link per se --- when healthy he's unhittable --- and the A's can get to the playoffs without him. The Loaiza signing assures us of that. But still, his continued lack of health is disturbing.

I voted Kotsay -- Ellis or Johnson in 2nd.
since I interpreted the question as not who will be the worst player on the team -- that would be somebody like Scutaro, Perez or some other scrub -- but most likely to disappoint.

Kotsay's back hurts on offense and defense and there's no real replacement for him -- unless you move Swisher to OF full time.  Most likely to be fully healthy and still disappoint would be Ellis for whom last year was hit lucky and out of character with his history or Johnson who tailed off badly the second time around the league.

by WaddellCanseco on Jan 19, 2006 4:34 AM PST reply actions

Kennedy?
I don't understand why people are voting for the lefty out of the bullpen as the weak link. Personally, I would be perfectly happy to have no lefties in the bullpen, so if Kennedy struggles and we plug in Flores or some other LOOGY in there it's no big loss.

Kendall looks ripe for another season of sub-par performance. He's an older catcher coming off his worst season. If only we knew Anahiem was going to be silly enough to dump Molina.
