Justin Smoak

Has anybody heard if we are going to sign our 16th round pick - Justin Smoak.  He was voted to the 2005 EA Sports High School All American team, but according to baseball america has yet to sign.  Is there usually a time frame that a draftee will normally sign before they start raising flags about not signing?

I found an article recapping the draft with Kevin Goldstein that said the only player he could see us not signing would be Smoak.

Any insight AN?

Smoak
He is attending the University of South Carolina.  Once he went to classes in the fall the A's lost the right to sign him to a contract.

According to Baseball America he should be the starting first baseman this year at South Carolina.

Go A's!!!!

He is a USC Gamecock

We lost the rights to him when he attended his first class in August.  He can't be drafted again until after his Junior season and we can't draft him again without his written permission.

I hope we draft him again
I would love to have him, I think it will be a blackeye we didn't sign him, like the Mariners not signing Barry Zito... or the Mariners not signing Rich Harden...

They'll get him eventually.
He'll be 42 and on a $78m contract by then, but they'll get him.

Or the A's not signing ...
Jonanthon Papelbon.

The moneyball draft of 2002 the A's selected him in the 40th round. The ZRed Sox signed him a year later in the 4th round.

I'm still kicking myself for that one
Jonanthon Papelbon is totally Cy Young material.

Yeah, but...
..look at all the guys the A's take in rounds 20-30 that end up being solid.

If Dallas Braden were drafted last year, what round would he have gone in? And if Mike Madsen would have been drafted this year, could you really see him going 25+?

A's get late round steals on a regular basis. We can let the occasional guy slide, since we snap up plenty of good ones.

And don't forget, if we got Papelbon at round 40, 29 other teams would have taken him at 41 or higher. We might not have got him, but we were onto him more than anyone else was.

Draft and follow
Well seeing as our 2nd round pick in 2003 was a draft and follow it sure would have been nice to due the same for papelbon. Seeing as our 2 1st rounders haven't done much yet. Papelbon in the 4th round is looking like a huge steal !!

You got the picture...
The A's said no way to $1,000,000 bonus to a 15th or 16th round selection in the draft.  And that was the end of the dream of having Justin Smoak on the A's.  A youthful slugger just is not projectable that much.  DREAM ON GUYS....

dont understand
the difference is only 50,000  why wouldn't they pony up just a bit more.  was the 950,000 just to safe face, knowing that if they didn't hit 1 mill he wasn't going to sign anyways.

i mean, 50,000 is more than they make from the hot dogs on dollar days.
