Melhuse signed

Melhuse agreed to a 1 year deal today http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20060117&c ontent_id=1296684&vkey=pr_oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak

Now we have 1 player left which is Ellis. Think we'll sign him long term? I guess it all depends, Melillo should be ready in 1-2 years. And then we have converted 2b Pennington that should be here in 3 or so years.

In Billy we trust...

Remember two things about Ellis
Last year was the proverbial career year-- we don't know if he can repeat it or even come close.

The A's have middle-infielders rising rapidly throught their system-- Pennington and Mellilo-- and Ellis may be expendable after this year.

I think there is a very good chance
that Ellis's fate this year depends on how Melillo does this year. If Melillo is strong at AA then moves up and is strong at AAA, or starts at AAA and is strong, then he will be our 2007 starting 2nd Baseman. They likely will not let him languish since he would be a heafty offensive force in the lineup.

Ellis, if he repeats his 2005 campaign but with more plate appearances, could very well be dealt in 2007 for pitching or something else.

What really hurt Ellis is Bobby Crosby, or more specifically, Bobby Crosby's shoulder.

what about Pennington
I know hes at short right now but Crosby isnt going anywhere for a long time.

Do you think he could be what the A's have in mind long term at 2B instead of Melillo?

rumors
rumors were that if all goes according to plan (i.e. Mellilo or Ellis long-term at second and the other being dealt) Pennington would be converted to CF to take over for Kotsay when his contract is up.

melhuse's agreement
from sfgate.com
Backup catcher Adam Melhuse agreed to a $700,000, one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, avoiding salary arbitration.

Melhuse, who batted .247 with two homers and 12 RBIs in 39 games last season, will get $25,000 in performance bonuses for reaching 115 and 140 plate appearances, with a $100,000 bonus for 165 plate appearances. He made $385,000 last year.

$850?
Look again. Melhuse had 102 PA last year despite the worst season of Kendall's career. He had even less in 2003. The only reason he had more in 2004 was that Damian Miller couldn't handle full-time catching duties. Melhuse won't break 115 PA unless Kendall gets hurt.

Really ...?
I like Millhouse, love the haircut, the surprisingly potent bat, but is he really a good fit for the 2006 club? Specifically, don't we need a strong catch-and-throw #2 behind Kendall? I am optimistic about JK bouncing back offensively -- his track record is too long and too good, and he's too young (relatively speaking) to expect a permanent collapse. But as bad as he was at the plate last year, he was more damaging behind it (despite his flair for the dramatic there). And against the Angels or any team aggressive on the bases, he was (or should have been) unplayable. Granted, Kendall had never been a disaster controlling the running game beforehand, but somehow this skill seems more likely to be gone for good than his bat.

Hmmm
Somehow tell me how does this relate to melhuse getting a 1 year deal? All I see from this is a cheap shot from you and trying to discredit me somehow.

And for the record, I heard about it from the scout forums and posted it on here, granted I shoulda checked my sources but im still relativly new to this whole blog. But I still don't know why your trying to low blow me here.
