Poll: What has been our biggest problem this year?

All year I've heard complaints about Macha, Kendall, Chavez, Zito, and even the A's strategy (not bunting enough, etc), but I've been unable to decide whether any of these views is held by the great majority of AN posters or simply a few noisy posters.

This poll is an attempt to get a feel for how the "silent plurality" feels.  I'm not looking for a general consensus, just evidence that more than a few people really think these complaints have some merit.  I'm going to provide several "reasons" that the A's have struggled at times during the year.  Vote for the one you feel is most significant or important.

Option 1: Nothing's wrong.  This is a rebuilding year and we're rebuilding.  A few bumps along the road are nothing to worry about.

Option 2: Fire Macha!  Poor management has cost us lots of games this year.  In particular, the lineup has stunk and we've pulled pitchers at the wrong times.

Option 3: The man in the mask.  For $11 million, Kendall hasn't given us much.  We need someone with better power and average at the top of our line-up.

Option 4: Small-ball.  The A's need to bunt and steal more often so that they can manufacture runs.

Option 5: Schott in the foot.  Lew Wolff needs to open up the pocketbook so we can hire a power-hitting free-agent.

Option 6: Eric the Red.  Chavez hasn't come through this year.  He needs to step it up and be a real leader.  (Alternatively -- he needs to stop swinging at the first pitch every time)

Option 7: Big Bad Barry: Zito's a good pitcher, but not what we need from an Ace.  We should have kept Hudson or Mulder.

Option 8: Anything Else.  The team has a serious problem, but it's not one of those listed here.

Star-divide

I personally vote for Number 1, although I'll admit I would think about Option 6 a bit.  I love Chavez, but he needs to stop hacking at first pitches every time and get his numbers back up to where they've been in the past.

True
But it was sort of a Jekyll and Hyde kind of month.

I voted #1
Though I think BB needs to seriously look at ways to improve the offense next year. He's got a little more cash, so is the FA market a possibility? Is Daric Barton going to be ready? He needs to figure out a way for this offense to become more consistent, and for this team to be able to survive an injury or two.

#6 also tempted me.

Injuries
May the wind always be to your back... and never from it.

by Zonis on Sep 6, 2005 1:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The big one..
Not listed is injuries. This team can not afford injuries to key players during at any time during the year. Our replacement guys can not carry the load of the fallen.

Harden v. Big Joe(K)
Kotsay(cf)/Payton(lf) v. Payton/Kielty
Crosby v. Scuturo
Dotel/Street v. anyone/Street at the end of games
Durazo v. Dj

It's been a tough year, we will not shed many parts this year, but next year we need these guys to stay healthy. We have 25 games left, and if the roller coaster is true to form, we have 2 7 game win streaks in us, let's see if they will matter.

Injuries
I would have put that up, only injuries aren't anyone's "fault" so I just sort of assumed people would vote for #1.  Shoulda made that clear.

I'm not surprised that so far no one has voted for any of the complaints I've seen so many posts about in various threads.

I don't think it is fair...
To generalize the whole season into a single issue. I mean, yes all those things have been problems from time to time, but each of them have had a great impact on the team also.

I think a lot of it has to do with the combination of the occurances and the timing. I mean, you can deal with an injury or two if the offense isn't slumping. You can deal with strange decisions by management if the bull pen does it's job. I don't want to call this a rebuilding year because I think they are doing a wonderful job now, why worry about next year.

I think Injuries have been our biggest problem, so I voted for 8, but I think it is more because of their timing and the sheer quantity of the injuried! So to say, oh it is all Kendall's fault, or Macha's Fault, or Chavey's fault is not only wrong and inacurate, but it isn't fair to the blamed. This team is all about picking eachother up when someone goes down, and for the most part they have done that, but sometimes it just isn't enough.

I think they will be fine and will get back on track very soon. We just all have to resist the temptaion to point finger, because the way this team works, the exact person you place blame on, will be the hero of the day once they get going again!

I agree completely
that finger pointing is worse than useless.  But I think a handful of people on this site like to harp on one or two of these these issues as if they make or break the team.

The point of this poll is to illustrate that there are only a few people who feel strongly enough about these issues to single them out as the one significant issue that really matters.  I think answering "it's a combination of these things" really says "none of these on its own is that significant".

You made a great point about being able to handle injuries if the offense is on its game.  Hopefully the boys will illustrate your point tonight with their bats.

#1
No one expected the A's to be where they are today, not even the A's! Next year will be different. Expectations will be much higher. If this happens next year, than we got some serious problems.

The "Silent plurality" speech
Two years ago Athletics Nation was weak and poor. But even then, AN was the hope of millions in the world. Today we have become the strongest and smartest Nation in the world. And the wheel of destiny has turned so that any hope the A's have for the survival of in the pennant race will be determined by whether the AN people have the moral stamina and the courage to meet the challenge of online leadership.

Let historians not record that when AN was the most powerful Nation in the world we passed on the other side of the road and allowed the last hopes for the pennant race of millions of people to be suffocated by the forces of Steinbrennerarianism.

And so tonight -- to you, the great silent plurality of my fellow Anians -- I ask for your support.

I pledged in my campaign for the GMidency to end the season in a way that we could win the postseason. I have initiated a plan of action which will enable me to keep that pledge.

The more support I can have from the AN people, the sooner that pledge can be redeemed; for the more divided we are at home, the less likely the enemy is to negotiate at Anaheim.

Let us be united for the playoffs. Let us also be united against defeat. Because let us understand: Southern California cannot defeat or humiliate the Athletics Nation. Only ANians can do that.

Fifty years ago, in this site and at this very page, GM Cornelius McGillicuddy spoke words which caught the imagination of a war-weary world. He said: "This is the game to end games." His dream for playoffs after selling off his players was shattered on the hard realities of great power hitters and Cornelius McGillicuddy died a broken man.

Tonight I do not tell you that the games against Anaheim are the games to end games. But I do say this: I have initiated a plan which will end this season in a way that will bring us closer to that great goal to which Cornelius McGillicuddy and every Athletics GM in our history has been dedicated -- the goal of a just and lasting postseason.

As GM I hold the responsibility for choosing the best path to that goal and then leading the Nation along it.

I pledge to you tonight that I shall meet this responsibility with all of the strength and wisdom I can command in accordance with your hopes, mindful of your concerns, sustained by your prayers.

Thank you and goodnight.

The phrase "silent majority"
was coined by Ronald Reagan in one of his most moving speeches.  I was punning off of it with "silent plurality" and got caught.

actually ...
... it was Nixon, in the 1969 speech in which he imputed that he had a secret plan to win the war in Vietnam.

Nixon redux
It seems your adaptation may have sailed right by many of the younger members of our AN community.

As I understand, Nixon was quite the baseball aficionado.

Nixon and Sports
I'm guessing that was a game against the 49ers where they lost 13 yards on a play suggested by the original Milhouse.

I  could pretend that I actually knew this bit of trivia:  Nixon and Sports Chronology.  RMN even saw Reggie hit two home runs during an A's/Senators game 1969.

Isn't the web great.  It can make even garden variety dimwits (like me) appear as experts.

Oh that's right.
I was also listening to Reagan's famous speech for Barry Goldwater's campaign and got them confused.

by atomopawn on Sep 6, 2005 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Now, THAT's ...
... a great speech (speaking from the position of rhetoric alone).

Although, to be fair, it was essentially the same speech RR had been honing for nearly 10 years on the rubber-chicken circuit for GE. He'd had a lot of practice, and a lot of focus-grouping.

More trivia: Reagan's speech was delivered in the Cow Palace in San Francisco.

Have you heard
Johnson's "Great Society" speech?  It's pretty good, too, from a rhetorical point of view.  I miss the days when politicians were often great orators.

I'm impressed.
As good as Reagan himself!  I collect MP3 versions of great speeches and just finished the "silent majority" speech last night (I also listened to "I have a dream"), which is probably why I chose that phrase.  Great to know there's someone else with a strong history background on here!

Injuries compounded by Cud Chewing:
That is my vote.

From Ken Macha in today's Chronicle, "One of these days we'll get him a buncha runs" -On Joe Blanton's low run support

This is your leader. he sits back, chewing his gum waiting for runs. Pathetic. I bet he thought that Mulder would just go out there and pitcha gem in September of last year. Once again, pathetic.

Pick up Payton's Option...P...P...P...Please?

by saint on Sep 6, 2005 2:39 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

You are so right
I'm waiting for the book on Macha's stupid statements, will be hilarious.
How about "I want to leave Kendall at leadoff because he always hits over .300 in Sept".
Let me think this one through, where has he played the last 8 years? oh!!Pitts.!!!!Where were they in Sept.?  Let me see, 25 games out?
How intense are your opponents who play you in Sept. when they are 8 runs ahead in the 3rd inning?  Not very.  How much pressure are you playing under?  Like none. HMMMM!!! would that have anything to do with you having a high average in Sept.?  Maybe.
My favorite is we "can't DH Melhuse because if Kendall got hurt we would have to let the pitcher hit in the DH position."  Never mind that some of our pitchers are probably better hitters than our hitters, the statement is just flat stupid.  We have been shut out 12 times this year and Macha gives us the "deer in the head light look" as if a manager has no control over anything, in his case that is accurate.

Injuries
Everyone knows that, how did the A's play with Crosby, great they just had one long slump with the guy which lasted about a week and Harden came back and caught fire with Glynn/Etherthon in the rotation they almost had an ERA of 6 along with the lineup not being complete, oh can we say: Defense

Not enough donuts in the clubhouse. Donuts make everything better.

So with 66 votes in, there are just a couple
of things worth commenting on about the poll results.

First, I think it's clear that the majority of posters think there's nothing wrong other than injuries.

Second, it seems criticism of Chavez and Kendall draws support from a significant segment of AN.

Criticism of Barry and the A's reluctance to spend seems to come from just a few crackpots.

There is some anti-Macha sentiment, but not nearly as much as I expected.  There is also very little criticism of how the A's play the game.  It seems we have a fairly sabermetric crowd here at AN.

If this poll makes it to 100 votes, I'll post a new analysis if it seems like the trends have changed in any significant way.

by atomopawn on Sep 6, 2005 7:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll put my hat in the ring...
(and maybe my foot in my mouth), but I think aside from all the injury issues, our el capitan has failed us in the instances where a manager's influence and basic understanding could have helped us. Macha's line-ups have been absurd for the last month. He may as well chisel them in stone for as flexible as he's apparently been willing to be. I've been less critical of his handling of the pitching situations, but still, I think the A's will be a better team when they find a more dynamic manager. Howe and Macha have been great guys, but when the storms move in, I want a more aggressive guy behind the wheel of the ship.
