Playoffs --> who are you rooting for?

My friends and I were talking about this the other day.  Here's the way I see it as of now (with the Wild Card still to be decided).

Star-divide

In the AL:
1 Cleveland (scrappy!)
2 ChiSox (talk about due!)
3 Red Sox (better them than LAA or NYY)
4 Angels (better them than NYY)
5 Yankees (self explanatory

In the NL:
1 San Diego (wouldn't that be funny?)
2 St. Louis (poo holes!  heh!)
3 Atlanta (to be honest, I'm cool with any non-Clemens NL team)
4 Houston (because of Clemens.  I just don't like the guy)

So, overall, let's see how that would play out:
1 Cleveland
2 San Diego
3 ChiSox
4 St. Louis
5 Atlanta
6 Red Sox
7 Houston
8 Angels
9 Yankees

So, what do you guys (and girls) think?  How do you rank them?  I think if Houston didn't have Clemens, I'd probably put them a lot higher.  But, much like a team with Bonds, one rotten apple is all it takes.  Maybe if they'd change their team name to Huston....

Another thought...
If they'd change their name to Huston's ASS-tros I bet they'd get even more fans...

I like your list except
I don't want San Diego to win and think it's all too possible that they will; I hate how undeserving teams often beat far superior ones in the playoffs (see 2001--88-win Yankees team beats our A's and then 116-win Mariners).

It's like, you win all those regular season games, for what--home-field advantage?  That gets taken away in one game.  I think the team with the better record ought to have every game of the series at its home ballpark--that would be a home-field advantage worth fighting for all season.  Anyway, I hope San Diego gets blown out asap.

Do you have them last?
Or where do you put them?

I'm not entirely sure about the San Diego thing...but think about it this way.  How often has a team this bad qualified?  If they lose one more game the answer is NEVER.  This is history!  If they win it all then when we're old and grey (or older and greyer) we can tell the young 'uns that we were there when the pathetic Padres won it all!

I see where you're coming from
Of course titanic upsets have their appeal.  But I think right now, baseball more than any sport spoils, to some extent, its great regular season, which truly separates the good from the mediocre, by then allowing the not-so-good to erase the entire season with a couple good games in the playoffs.

Sure, other sports do the same thing.  But in other sports, I think those upsets are more difficult to pull off.

I don't have my list totally figured out, it's sort of like this

  1. Atlanta (they've been getting too much shit for playoff failures, when really they've been a decent playoff team in the last decade.  Plus they have Hudson.)
  2. Whomever's playing the Yankees.
  3. Whomever's playing the Red Sox (unless the Yankees are eliminated, in which case I don't mind the Sox succeeding.  I'm just tired of the national sports reporters drooling over Red Sox-Yankees matchups.)
  4. St. Louis (they've been so consistently dominant for two seasons, kind of want to see them do well.  Plus they have Mulder.)
  5. Everybody else.

Right now
I could root for most teams.
In the AL: The ChiSox because it's been a while, plus I've always empathized with them for being in the shadow of the more popular NL team with (recently) a potentially steroid-abusing star. Also for Jermaine Dye.
The Indians because of the smaller payroll. I still have some painful memories of losses to them otherwise I would be more enthusiastic with my support.
The yankees- only root for them to beat the sawx or angels. But it wouldn't upset me as much if they won it all this year compared to years past. (emphasis on the "as much")
Sawx- not rooting for them.
angels- are you kidding?

In the NL- I could root for St. Louis because of Mulder and LaRussa (I think I'm over losing half the team to Missouri in the 90's). Also felt bad that they got swept last year.
The Astro's- similar turn around this season- but then there's Clemens.
The Braves- Huddy first of all. Also like them to shed the "choke" rep they get.
The Phillies- former A's city. And some older fans still love the Philadelphia A's. Good enough for me.
The Padres- yeah, it galls me that a team with a worse record wins their division while our team watches at home. But talk about rooting for the under dog. Plus they call their park Petco, and there was a rat in the field the other night. And I would be so happy for Rrrrrramon.

Of course all this is subjective and subject to change.

Anyone
But NY, Boston or Anaheim..I wish nothing but the worst for all three of those teams.

Who am I behind?
THE INDIANS!!!!! shit the Indians have been my SECOND faviort team since I saw the movie "MAJOR LEAGUE" when I was 8... Honestly I still get a tear in my eye at the end of the movie when the umpire yells.."SAFE,SAFE,SAFE,SAFE!" and then Bob Ukers call.."THE INDIANS WIN IT,THE INDIANS WIN IT,OHH MY GOD! THE INDIANS WIN IT!!!!!"  shit that moment will live with me forever!

And the winner is..............
AL

Chi Sox -  Ozzy tried to have me tossed.....nope
Bo Sox -    I hate them almost as much as their own fans do......nope
Yankees -  Well, they are the Yankess then aren't they........nope
Laaaaaaaa - Beginning to take this final week elimination trend a little personally..........nope
Indians -  No arrogant fans or hosiery fettishes......eh

Winner by default, via apathy - The Indians (besides, they have a drummer, how bad can they be?)

NL

Cards -  Hate to see them get ahead of us in rings.......nope
Pads -  Funny, but not "ha, ha" funny........nope
Atlanta - Have you seen that rotation and bullpen?
Astros -  Pitching, yes.  CF with 50 HRs, no...........nope

Winner by lingering loyalty to Huddy - The Braves.

So no love
for the rats in Petco? I mean, that could swing a nation depending on how they handle it. A rat was killed on the ice in a hockey  playoff. End result? People not caring about hockey. True. It was... that Tampa team, or some other sort of team not my Islanders. And then a couple of years later, no hockey. Coincidence?
Definitely possibly not. So think about that.
But I do love your drums. :)

Do you remember............
who was the World Series winner the last time there was no hockey?   I fear that.

I am conflicted
I am an AL girl all the way. But, I don't care for any team that is in there right now! I am afraid the Indians won't make the play offs and I can't handle rooting for the Yankees, Red Sox, or Angels, so by default I will HAVE to root for the White Sox.

But, I am still a loyal Hudson and Mulder fan, so I will be rooting for the Braves and Cardinals. I am not a Braves fan, just a Huddy fan. So I am going to be going for the Cardinals.

Idealy, I would like to see the Indians and Cardinals go at it in the WS. I would like Mulder to win his game, but the Indians to win the series.

Im leaning more towards the NL
The Cards are my favorite NL team, by best friend loves the Braves... I don't particularly like any of the AL teams in it... I guess a Cards, Chisox WS would create some nice pitching duels and give the Cubbies fans a tuff time deciding who to cheer for...

Rooting for:
In the NL: Cardinals and Braves. No real strong feelings between those two, but I hope both Mulder and Hudson pitch well.

In the AL: White over Red (in baseball, not wine), Angels over Yankees, then White Sox over Angels in the ALCS.

And I'd root for Hudson's or Mulder's team over anyone still alive in the AL in the World Series.

Not how I think it will play out, but that's who I'm pulling for.

The Indians are eliminated
Okay, I guess that changes things.

Basically, it comes down to me rooting for the ChiSox in the AL and the Pads/Braves/Cards in the NL.  If none of those teams make it and it is Red Sox/Yanks/Halos against Houston, well, I just may have to watch hockey instead.
