Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Sharks Season starts in one week!

First game, October 5th in Nashville. Nashville are very good and this is gonna be a tough first few weeks (9 of the first 11 games on the road). Last I checked, we still had not lost in the preseason which means nothing, but alas does not hurt. I went to the last game vs. Anaheim--always good to see Anaheim lose no matter what the contest.

A few thoughts: So far Michalek is looking really good and should replace Korky nicely. Ehrhoff has played very well and I hope he eventually wins the job as the 4th defensman. Finally, was anyone else sad to see Friesan not traded back to the Sharks? His greatest asset is his skating which would fit perfectly with the Sharks' style. IMO he'd have been the ideal LW on the 2nd line, bumping Ekman to the 3rd line where he is a more natural fit.

Go Sharks!

YES
I AM READY FOR HOCKEY SEASON! AND BASKETBALL SEASON TOO! I love the sharks, like, underratedly and am loving their chanches. They are young, and quick, and that is SWEET! It's a bummer they couldn't sign Niedermayer, who ended up choosing the damn Ducks.

I can understand the need for success where your favorite sport is ibaseball and the local team is the tigers (who are getting better though)

I dislike the red wings very much though, sorry.

its funny tho because my friends and i were just talking the other day about how the red wings were like the yankees of hockey (before the new deal of course)  the bay area is SO lucky they have so many teams, detroit has to deal with the TIGERS and the LIONS...its saving our sanity to have hockey back

yes
this winter will be much more bareable with hockey back. Not only that, the sharks will contend, and so will the warriors. Hooray Beer! (red stripe beer commercial. yes, this is random)

Lions and Tigers are both young teams on the rise though, so you got a good future?

P.S. What college is GVSU?

The great thing
After a bunch of criticism for not signing a bunch of marquee FA this year, the sharks all know eachother and play well.  This team shouldnt need any time to gel.

Ehrhoff will definetly start for this team.  I hope that Bernier makes it as well.  Another first rounder rising quickly through the minors.

Im so pumped about the season though, its like life after death.

I agree about Bernier
he looks like he will be an excellent 2nd line power forward down the line, maybe even a first liner.

hockey question
I'm not really into the sport meyself, only watch a few games a year + the finals. I heard that instead of a tie, this year would have a shootout. The idea sounds cool but it would severely affect the point standings.

My question is: How do "real" hockey fans feel about this?

Im kinda iffy
Ive never had a problem with ties. Hockey is a sport in which goals can be hard to come by and two teams that battle throughout the game both get to go home with a point. It doesnt reward teams that play hard every game. It puts a lot of pressure on teams and goalies to get it done in the shootout or win it before.

That being said its exciting to see, and if it brings more people to the sport im all about it. My biggest thing with the rule changes is that it needs to be about scoring chances, not just racking up the scoring.

by pickinmachine on Sep 28, 2005 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree about ties
I never had a problem with ties either and was hoping they would remain.

I found out though later that each team gets a point regardless for making it to a shootout, so it's not like a team comes away with nothing should it lose in a shootout.

by Pucking Insane on Sep 28, 2005 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it was already like that
Like overtime losses mean 1 point anyways, and overtime wins were 2 points right?
So like instead of overtime 4-4, there will be shootouts?

I've never been a hockey fan but always
root for the Sharks -- by default.  I'm going to try (very hard) to follow the NHL (mainly the Sharks) this year.  Let's see how that goes.

Another question:
Is it ok if I call them the Sharkies?  I think it's cute.
[Please don't kill me if that's considered to be a big no-no in hockey :P ]

What about Marchment?
I went to a Leafs playoff game a couple of years ago when I was in Toronto. What a great atmosphere. I mostly had a negative opinion of the Leafs prior to that (no good reason for it, just a remnant of the playoff loss the Sharks suffered to them in their first playoff appearance). But after that, I can't wish them ill. Great town, great fans, and banners dating way back (is it 1914?). That is impressive. I wish the A's would embrace some of the old (pre-Oakland) championships.

by peanut gallery on Sep 28, 2005 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

oh ya, toronto is the hockey mecca
there is no doubt. toronto is a hockey town, 24/7, 12 months a year. the BJs could be in the running for the playoffs and every sportscast on radio or TV would start with leaf pre-season action.
