AN,should foolshgame22 pay up? With Poll

First of all, i'd like to thank the A's and AN for a great season of baseball. In April I predicted a 84-86 win season for the boys in green/gold but they far exceeded my expectations with their general level of play and courage. I believe this ball club is VERY close to getting back into the playoffs....and then, well, everything is a crap shoot.

Anyway, the reason for this diary is simple. Many on AN will know a certain lovable loudmouth who had (has) a strong manlove for a certain player currently sitting on the bench in Baltimore. We here on AN, have had to endure countless comments from foolshgame22 re: byrnes and his "greatness". Reading through some previous exchanges between foolsh and some AN memebers is truly entertaining (one such encouter between foolsh and grover was hysterical). Yes my friends, foolshgame22 was pure hyperbole when it came to that jackass byrnes. BUT, dammit, one day foolsh went too far. Too far I say!

It started with a challenge. Now, I'II admit, I fancy myself as a betting man. I can also assess odds and such and see when I'm getting suckered. But when foolsh dropped this one down, against some strong odds, i bit. (i.e. total ABs for players for an ex). To refresh your memories:

http://www.athleticsnation.com/story/2005/6/24/75025/3841

Now, as you read through the diary you'II notice FIVE of us took up foolshgame22's challenge. We were commonly called (mainly by foolsh) "The Foolsh Five";

"bigelephant", "novaoakland", "JSCHWAN",
"capper3" and "nickolai".

The Foolsh Five tolerated many barbs from foolsh regarding this bet but we stuck to it. Some examples:

http://www.athleticsnation.com/comments/2005/8/3/33920/63395/2#2

http://www.athleticsnation.com/comments/2005/7/24/23570/3577/14#14

http://www.athleticsnation.com/comments/2005/7/9/25516/89355/4#4

So, just like the season is almost over for our beloved A's, so is this bet. I believe, without a shadow of doubt, foolshgame22 should soon be paying "The Foolsh Five" $500-$100 per. Read the numbers:
                AB      AVG    OBP      SLG

Byrnes vs RH:   254    .205   .270     .327
Kotsay vs RH:   395    .261   .310     .403

People, the numbers are in and they don't lie- Foolshgame22 needs to pay up....and fast! Now, I don't know how the others in The Foolsh Five gang feel, but I'm willing to let AN ultimately  decide if foolsh actually honors his bets. You've read the challenge, you've read the remarks, you know the depth of foolsh's manlove for Byrnes and you've seen the numbers. So, I ask you, what do we do...............?

EDITORS NOTE: Eventhough foolsh can be a royal pain in the ass I'm hesitating on holding his feet to close to fire on this. Foolsh does have "a little foolshgame22" on the way and I'd hate see little foolsh go without. I just wish daddy foolsh would grab some friggin' brains and stop being so, well, foolsh. If Foolshgame22 promises to take his wife out for dinner and buy little foolsh some new Nike sneakers...well, I'm willing to let it slide...THIS GD TIME ONLY!

Too Funny!
I liked your odds when you took on the bet, BigE.

Foolsh was blinded by his passions, which we may have all been guilty of at one point or another. I just wonder if he would have been so generous as you with the offer, if the tables were turned.

I'd like to say let the punishment fit the crime (commonly the approach I take with my kids). So Foolsh, if you're reading this what's the deal?  Do you buy each of the Fab5 an A's jersey with Byrnes' name on the back or will you buy a peewee A's jersey for your new one on the way with "Watson" and his number placed on the back of it?

Now, if you have the means to pay up, then let the punishment fit the crime.

i couldn't believe foolshgame22 basically put his money in byrnes' pocket and tried riding him to the finish line. usually, a bet is a bet with me also.....but i have a 7 year old and, well, should a child (whatever name foolsh decides on) go without because of the stupidity of their father?

That's exactly what the problem is
"If the tables were turned" I doubt you all would be so eagar to pay up. And we have no means to prove things either way - it's just easy to pick on him now. I mean, he even offered to pay up ahead of time and give the cash to a go-between, but as far as I can remember no one took him up on that idea. So maybe he should buy each of the people an AN shirt or something, but requesting $500 from a guy on the internet for a silly bet seems a bit drastic.

Melody, The whole bet was ludicrous...
...but foolsh is as foolsh does.

It's not the 1st time in history bets such as this have appeared. Personally, A's fans, I believe are a superior sort and we shouldn't doubt the integrity of those involved.

To err is human but to forgive is...divine!

I actually like the thought of Foolsh pledging his allegiance to Kotsay and wearing a Kotsay or Watson tshirt/jersey for 2006. Also, we should stipulate that his child can't have any reference to anything Byrnes. eg wearing #22, learning phrases such as "I am my biggest fan", etc.

by Gerard on Sep 28, 2005 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Well if he had already given his money to
a go-between, I think we'd all just be like, "You know what, he's stupid enough to commit to this, let him pay up." But it seemed that no one really would cough up the cash when he asked people to bring money to AN day and hand it over to Blez... Who wouldn't even acknowledge such a bet, much less get involved ;)

I think that buying everyone [including himself and one for his baby!] one of those Kotsay shirts is fair, just because he was the one who initiated the bet. $500 is just way to much money and kind of takes the fun out of the whole situation.

For the record Mel:
There was no way I was going to fly 3500 miles to give Blez my $100 bucks on AN day. BUT i did try to contact foolsh through e-mail and explain to I have a PayPal account and my bet was legit. When I bet, I pay, IF I come out of the short end of the stick. alas, all I got back from foolshgame was crickets. It was then I knew foolsh was all talk and no action.

by bigelephant on Sep 28, 2005 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions

To add on to BigE's point
We the 5 had offered to firm up the conditions of the bet via email.  My email address has always been listed on my AN profile page, but Foolsh NEVER posted his.  He never tried to contact me about the bet, and I had no way to contact him.

And likewise, he had proposed giving the $ to an intermediary the DAY AFTER byrnes was traded to the Rockies.  Instead of contacting us by email to finalize the trade then, he calls us out in a diary implying that we don't have the stones to honor the bet?!  Come on.

I don't really care if he pays up now, and I sure as hell don't expect him to.  But I would hope he would treat others on AN with a little more respect.

Another compromise solution
Here's an idea to lessen the financial impact that might be satisfying to the bettors, but lessen the burden on LittleFoolsh:

Foolsh has to buy six Mark Kotsay t-shirts (not jerseys, just the $20 ones you can get at the Coliseum).  One each for every bettor, and one for himself.  Foolsh has to wear the Kotsay t-shirt to each and every A's game he attends next year.

I Can See the Headlines Now...
Dateline- The well repudiated on-line blog that caught the sporting world's attention for it's sophistication and wit was indicted by the FBI for on-line gambling taking place in California at a location outside of a Native American Preserve.

Allegedly, a bet took place b/w a man who had a striking resemblance to Eric Byrnes and a band of 5 individuals led by a large pachyderm.

The blog's founder, Blez, had very little to say as he was hand-cuffed outside of his N. California home. All that was heard was, "hrrrumphhmm-mrpfpfhhflshgm22mpprhh" as they stuffed a sock in his mouth when he refused to take the 5th Amendment. While he claimed, he recalled nothing of the bet. His alibi, Billy Beane, the Oakland Athletics GM was unavailable for comment.

Pay up, of course
I believe it is really the foolsh 4: in the original thread capper3 asked foolsh to email him with official terms of the bet or it was off, and I believe he said in another thread (one of foolsh's taunting "so are you guys going to pay up" posts) that that never happened.

But for the other four, of course he should pay up. If he were a teenager I might say let him off a hook, but he's a grown man and should treat "responsibility for your actions" as more than a catchphrase. (I wonder if Mrs. Foolsh knows about the bet.) What they choose to do with the money - keep it, return it, or give it to charity - is their own business, not ours.

The revolution starts now.

by andeux on Sep 28, 2005 11:02 AM PDT reply actions

Also...
the bet was also Foolsh's idea.  If he can't pay then he needs to keep his trap shut and at least not initiate it.

I think that if the people who bet with him were ready to pay up if they lost, then it is reasonable to expect the same from Foolsh.

BTW, where has Foolsh been these days?

what is all this nonsense...
about reducing the financial impact on foolsh or buying him sh*t in exchange for him paying up??
maybe if the five each individually agree.  even then, it seems like social pressure on each of them to do so.  if you don't want your $100, just rip up the check.

but the fact is he owes them $100 each, pure and simple.  he made such a big deal about them paying up all year long, this is additional evidence that the bet wasn't some joke that can just be forgotten about.  it's not a "hey, the point was made, let's just drop it and be friends" situation.

where is the wiggle room here?

and i don't think he should be sending novaoakland's $100 directly to hurricane relief.  send it to one of the other people or blez and let them donate it so there is a witness and the money actually gets to the red cross.

Anyone who found enough merit in ByrnesBrain
to bet on his skills--NOT--deserves to pay the piper.

Some posters like Foolsh22 actually believed that if Bumblin Byrnesy played regularly, he'd hit well. Hmm, after ByrnesBum left the A's, he did play regularly in Colorado and Baltimore. Result: ByrnesBrain hit somewhere below the Mendoza line.

He ain't a regular anymore even with the strugglin O's, who likely have seen enough of him. Look for Baltimore to release that clown after the season.

Foolsh, look on the bright side: yer hero can always be a brainless clown prancing a la Krazy George on the dugout of some Class A minor league team... ;-)>

Personally, speaking
philosophically, I think any blogger should be banned if he makes a bet on a blog and fails to honor the results. (And I am just speaking as one of 3,000 users as I have no authority whatsoever on this matter.)

It's all about integrity, not about baseball or babies on the way. And I assume he WILL pay up, so I hope it's a non-issue. If the recipients want to turn around and donate $100.00 to the Hurricane Relief effort, or some other good cause, more power to them. But a bet was made and should be honored.
