Tiebreakers: A's Lose Again

I can't even remember the last time the A's actually won one of the these tiebreaker coin flips.

ESPN article

Star-divide

If game is needed to break a tie between Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central, the Indians would host, and if the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland need a tiebreaker in the AL West, the game would be at Anaheim.

In the event a tiebreaker is needed for the wild card, New York and Oakland would play at Cleveland, and Oakland would play at New York.

Season series
Where does the season series come into play. The media talks about it a lot like it was important.
I thought perhaps that coin toss result would be used if the season series was tied. If that were tue then this result wouldn't mean anything since the A's and Angels play 19 times.

Season series tie break only comes into play
when 2 teams tie for both the division title AND the wildcard.  Since both teams are already in the playoffs, it makes no sense to play a game just for seeding.  So they just use season series to determine who gets which "slot".

This happened in the 2001 NL Central (Astros/Cardinals).

According to the Tribune,
the A's have lost the last 9 coin flips (odds of that happening are 1 in 512).

Well. At least we've been playing better on the road than at home as of late.
