Mark Ellis: Best A's second base season ever?

I will admit that the next three plus weeks could change things greatly and that this is somewhat obvious but I thought that I would Mark Ellis' excellent season in some wider context.  Since the A's have moved to Oakland they have never had a second baseman who was a consistently very good offensive player.  In fact, there have been very few individual seasons by A's second basemen that have been even good, never mind great.

Here is the list:

2005 Mark Ellis     (.381 OBP .469 SLG) .850 OPS
1999 Tony Phillips  (.362 OBP .433 SLG) .795 OPS
1969 Dick Green     (.353 OBP .427 SLG) .780 OPS
1983 Davey Lopes    (.341 OBP .423 SLG) .764 OPS
2000 Randy Velarde  (.354 OBP .400 SLG) .754 OPS
2002 Mark Ellis     (.359 OBP .394 SLG) .753 OPS
1993 Brent Gates    (.357 OBP .391 SLG) .748 OPS
2001 Frank Menechino(.369 OBP .374 SLG) .743 OPS
1992LanceBlankenship(.393 OBP .341 SLG) .734 OPS
1992 Mike Bordick   (.358 OBP .371 SLG) .729 OPS
1986 Tony Phillips  (.367 OBP .345 SLG) .712 OPS

1994 Brent Gates    (.337 OBP .365 SLG) .702 OPS
2003 Mark Ellis     (.313 OBP .371 SLG) .694 OPS
1989 Tony Phillips  (.345 OBP .348 SLG) .693 OPS
2004 Marco Scutaro  (.297 OBP .393 SLG) .690 OPS
1997 Scott Spiezo   (.300 OBP .388 SLG) .688 OPS
1982 Davey Lopes    (.304 OBP .371 SLG) .675 OPS
1988 Glenn Hubbard  (.334 OBP .340 SLG) .674 OPS
1971 Dick Green     (.320 OBP .354 SLG) .674 OPS
1985 Donnie Hill    (.321 OBP .351 SLG) .672 OPS
1995 Brent Gates    (.308 OBP .344 SLG) .652 OPS
1990 Willie Randolph(.331 OBP .318 SLG) .649 OPS
1973 Dick Green     (.308 OBP .340 SLG) .648 OPS
1975 Phil Garner    (.295 OBP .346 SLG) .641 OPS
1979 Mike Edwards   (.303 OBP .329 SLG) .632 OPS
1972 Tim Cullen     (.286 OBP .331 SLG) .617 OPS
1981 Shooty Babitt  (.315 OBP .301 SLG) .616 OPS
1996 RafaelBournigal(.290 OBP .313 SLG) .603 OPS
1977 Marty Perez    (.290 OBP .311 SLG) .601 OPS
1980 Dave McKay     (.283 OBP .315 SLG) .598 OPS
1968 John Donaldson (.307 OBP .273 SLG) .580 OPS
1974 Dick Green     (.269 OBP .275 SLG) .544 OPS
1979 Mike Edwards   (.263 OBP .280 SLG) .543 OPS
1970 Dick Green     (.267 OBP .240 SLG) .507 OPS

Keep in mind that these numbers do not reflect the league average.  Given that something striking about these numbers is how bad Marco Scutaro really hit last year given that the year in which he is listed was much more of a hitters season than that of his neighbours on this list.  Also, Dick Green's 1969 season is both seen as outstanding and a bit of a mystery as it came in a pitchers year and he never really approached that level of hitting performance in any other full season.

Thus, depending on how well Ellis continues to do the rest of this year and what the league averages are I would say that Ellis is having the best or the second best hitting season that an A's second baseman has ever had.
