My sister was like, "Hey it's Athletics Nation" but I thought she was just refering to the site because I'm here. Turns out she saw the banner and was trying to tell me about it... I hope mlb is running the A's broadcast so I can catch this. Or did anyone tivo it? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE?

if you have mlb.tv
you can watch the game later.  All the games are archived for the entire year and you can watch any of them in it's entirety.  .  So fire up the game for 08/06, go to the bottom of the 6th or so, and find when they show the sign.  Do a screen cap and volia!

Wow...
Apparently, everything isn't up to date in Kansas City.

Okay
With an 8-0 lead, and poised to tack on more, I say Blanton should regurgitate Yabu so he can close out the game.

C'mon guys.  Kick them when they are down!

by Ray in Chicago on Aug 6, 2005 6:08 PM PDT reply actions

just as a heads up
you can't screencapture off of mlb.tv. We had this huge discussion on why it was not allowed. Finally some computer science major had to explain that you can't capture streaming video - it's supposed to protect copyrights and blah blah blah.

by Melody on Aug 6, 2005 6:08 PM PDT reply actions

I'm sure you can
I'd assume you would just hit "pause" then use some screen capture program to get your image?

by OaktownTribesman on Aug 6, 2005 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions

nope, I've tried everything
When you hit pause, the screen usually goes black. I've tried about 10 different screencapture programs [after the good old print-screen didn't work], even ones that are supposed to capture to video, but all to no avail. You can easily screencapture purchased games, but not games that you stream from mlb.tv.

by Melody on Aug 6, 2005 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Have you tried with the archived MLBTV games?
You can hit pause and see an image, when you're watching archived games. Using Windows Media and not Real Player to play the video.

by OaktownTribesman on Aug 6, 2005 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah
I tried to screenshot Scott Kazmir from the May 30th game, when his contact fell out... If anyone can figure out how to screenshot, I'd love shots of him still ;)

by Melody on Aug 6, 2005 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

try this
http://www.applian.com/wmr/

WM Recorder can record microsoft media streaming video.  Open mlb.tv and use the microsoft media player option, not the realplayer option.  While the video is playing, right click and go to properties.  At the bottom is the URL of the video file.  Copy that and paste into WMReocorder should work.  I can open up the regular media player with that URL on my machine.

by Ray in Chicago on Aug 6, 2005 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for the link!
I'll be sure to give it a shot after the game, when I get back to my room. [I'm on my sister's computer now because she has the TV.] Hopefully this will work!

by Melody on Aug 6, 2005 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Really?
Maybe I should stop rebroadcasting MLB with only implied oral consent. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be sued for a guy wearing Athletics nation gear, but I see your argument.
"...and then King Harden smote him with a 99MPH fastball"

by KingHardensServant on Aug 6, 2005 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions

you can probably capture a single frame
if you use a third party program like Iview or hi-jak or something like that.  All it does is take a snapshot of what your screen looks like - the streaming video doesn't matter.

If you want to save the video as a file, that is probably what he's taking about and that is tougher.  I thought about using the app WMRecorder to do it and it probably would work, but I didn't subscribe to mlb.tv this year so it never came up.  That was the dream, have the computer automagically download (via wmrecorder) the compressed version of the archive and watch it on my portable player on the train into work.  But I never got mlb.tv, so no dice.

... the A's on MLB.com, I've got to say that it is truly a pleasure when we get to see the A's broadcast.

Not only does it make me warm to watch a game with (ever-so-slightly) partisan announcers rooting for our guys, but Ray Fosse is fantastic!

He is informed about the A's and he's respectful to both the other team and the game of baseball.

Serious question: Why does KC have so little
talent? I just read somewhere that their attendance is actually consistently good.

What's going on, seriously?

T Long and Matt Stairs says it all.

by TonyArmas on Aug 6, 2005 6:12 PM PDT reply actions

they have the anti-Billy as a GM
or, to put it another way, their management sucks and they are unlucky.  We have great management and a bit of luck in taking a shot on someone and having it pan out more often than not.

by Ray in Chicago on Aug 6, 2005 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Pitching, as an example...
I asked earlier when the last time the Royals had a semi-reliable starter. BillyBall81 came up with Kevin Appier, and it's been eight years since his heyday in Kansas City.

But since then, good arms have been very rare. And when you compare them to the A's or the Marlins or even the Brewers -- teams whose markets are comparable -- the Royals have just not been cutting it in the scouting and development department.

KC shocked the league two years ago...
... actually competeing for the AL Central lead (granted, in a weak Central).  Then they fell flat last year.  Who was the difference maker in 2003 for the Royals.  I recall Tony Pena, then manager, getting alot of props... What happened?

well, they still had beltran, they also had juan gonzalez, though i don't remember him staying healthy much that year, no surprise there.  i seem to think they had a couple other cheap veterans who did a decent job.  and was that berroa's ROY year, or soph. slump?

yeah, that's the best i can come up with off the cuff.

Berroa was ROY in 2003...
...and he did slump last year.

Raul Ibanez hit 18 homers back then, behind Beltran's 26. Eight different Royals had 10+ homers.

Darrell May had a good year starting pitching in '03, but he clunked in '04, too.

by KingHardensServant on Aug 6, 2005 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, there's something to that
I don't think it's coincidence that the Bay Area has decade after decade innovated the way professinal sports is played and managed. Just citing my own life experience:

49ers: west coast offense (smart guy from Stanford); innovative payroll management using incentives & restructuring contracts, etc.

A's: don't know what they did so right in the 70's and 80's, but Moneyball is clearly changing the rules of the game.

Warriors, Giants and Raiders don't seem to have tapped into the intelligent, innovative spirit of the Bay Area.

Bottom line: lots o' smart people in the Bay Area lead to innovative thinking and success.

Meanwhile in Kansas (or nearby Missouri to stick with the Royals analysis), they just don't seem to get it, as "What's the Matter with Kansas?" so accurately points out.

by TonyArmas on Aug 6, 2005 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

The Royals Are the A's ...
... if the A's were poorly run.

Look at all the former A's on that team. Other than Sweeney, Grienke and Buck, it' all former Athletics, journeymen and guys who almost made it.

Not the on deck circles

I no longer live in the Bay Area
and mlb.com almost never shows the A's telecast, so forgive me for commenting on something so mundane, but...

If any of you are upset about BART fares, at least you know they're not spending your money on their massive advertising budget.

Yes
But sometimes they'll show the opposing team's telecast. Like for an A's-Angels game they'll show the Angels broadcast.

by OaktownTribesman on Aug 6, 2005 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

They have every radio broadcast
so I can always hear the A's team on radio, but AFAIK they only do one tv telecst per matchup.  I'm assuming this game isn't on tv in KC, so they have to go with the A's production.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s

by Nick on Aug 6, 2005 6:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Not every game and only one side
They have by far most of the games but not all of them, due to national ESPN blackout or something like that.

Also, for each game, there is the home and away broadcast to choose from.  They only use one of the two for mlb.tv, not both.  Often the broadcast chosen is not the A's team but the opponents broadcast team.

BART is an example of Calif. politics...
...mis-managing money.  Do you realize that you can travel anywhere on the Chicago "El" for a $1.50?  You can't even go from Fremont to Hayward on BART for a buck fifty!  I enjoy the comfort and speed of BART, but it could be so much better run, and cheaper as a result.

How AN'ers are now getting accused of getting
on the bandwagon? I had a former student tell me that the other day (seeing me in A's attire). He knows I am a true A's fan for life, so he was just joking.  However comments like that get under my skin. I wore the green and gold through TWO 8 game losing streaks in the same month.  Some people just don't understand the meaning of true fan. Sorry about the unrelated to the game rant.

by OaktownTribesman on Aug 6, 2005 6:47 PM PDT reply actions

A reason for the Royals demise ...
Colt Griffin. High school fireballer that could touch 100 but had little to no command. It never improved, and he's languished. He personifies their problems in taking a lot of "projectible" guys in the upper rounds without balancing that with less-toolsy-better-player college types. They look to have hit it with Billy Butler, and Alex Gordon could be a cornerstone, but they'll still be surrounded by questionable vets and vanilla pitching until they find their next Saberhagen.

That should be "projectable," although Stairs might be able to throw a couple of them 90 feet.

by WillieMcGeeModelingCompany on Aug 6, 2005 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

they don't appear to have a holistic approach
okay, so you wait and wait for the next stud to come through the system. by the time he's up the rest of the team will stink, they'll languish or maybe even compete for a playoff spot for a couple years and then they'll deal him for yet more prospects.

I don't think a lot of teams realize, more prospects later only works if it fits into a holistic strategy.

Trading a guy now for a couple guys who may turn out in a few years is simply a ridiculous strategy. realistically, any team that truly sucks for even a few years should really have a 3 year plan that will help them leapfrog teams that are getting old.

If I was them, I'd do whatever the A's and Twins are doing. Literally. Do not trade with the A's and Twins. If the A's or Twins want somebody, keep him or trade him to a club that needs immediate help and will give up prospects like the Cards and Braves were apparently willing to do.

No Wonder the Royals Are Losing...
...they're too busy taking a blackjack to the clubhouse to concentrate on the game!
These have rolled off the wire:
--recalled right-hander Mike Wood from Triple-A Omaha
--Donnie Murphy will start at second base for the Royals for the rest of the season
--optioned right-hander Leo Nunez to Double-A Wichita
--recalled right-hander Jonah Bayliss from Double-A Wichita
--optioned former first-round pick Kyle Snyder to Triple-A Omaha
--purchased the contract of utility player Denny Hocking from Triple-A Omaha
--ptioned opening day second baseman Ruben Gotay to Double-A

You get a rash of these moves reported and you can't help but wonder what's going on there... the owner is screaming into a phone, or the GM is trying to ward off a heart attack, or the coaches are throwing bats in the locker room...
