Can you say
AL Player of the week?

by KEVINfromCV on Aug 29, 2005 4:12 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can
...but I don't think the people who vote on stuff like that have ever heard of Mark Ellis.  Case in point: I still haven't figured out why the @%&#!% *ZITO was nominated for Comeback Player of the Year. I don't recall his arm being nearly useless only a year ago.
"We're two guys without any rhythm trying to catch the ball and do what we can." ~ Ellis, presumably also speaking for Crosby

Will this Award be featured on the ESPY's
if so, they will need some big names to hype it up.
McGwire's 70th HR ball: $3,000,000. Yankees payroll: $208,306,817. Thousands of jubilant A's fans parading down Broadway after a WS victory...priceless!

Zito isn't as bad as Jay Gibbons
Mark Ellis for Comeback Player of the Year!!!----He Actually had to come back!! Everyone else just sucked for a year.

what was that slacker doing on 8/26?
1-4. Lazy ass, I hate that guy.

Actually, I'll always have a soft spot for him for his massive 3-run dinger in the ninth inning of Gm 5 that should have won the 2002 ALDS, if not for Koch.

Ohhhhhhh
I loved that homerun.  Even though I was sad they lost, I actually left the park not too down because that awesome homerun put fear into the twins and the players went from being on the dugout steps ready to storm the field to sitting in the dugout chewing their nails.  It was fabulous.  And then we lost.  But anyhoo....

sigh.
Yep. Ray Durham almost hit it out to win the game, but instead was the final out. It was a long trudge to BART.

I assume you are posting from work...  but I also saw you post this weekend... did you get your home setup working?

so does anyone know
the list on the "most home runs from South Dakota" stat?  They are really going to update it.  Has he jumped anyone?

Absolutely
Stats before this season:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/bio/SD_born.shtml

So, he started the season in 4th, and has leaped into 2nd!  Only 9 behind Dave Collins for the all time South Dakota Slugger award!

His 8 ties Carroll Hardy for most HR in a season by a native South Dakotan.

And he's passed a certain Terry Francona on the list this season, too.

let's hope
he gets the ten needed for the record before the season is up.

The way he's going
he'll take care of that in the next week and a half.

Just sent an Email to Susan Slusser-
Susan,

According to everyone on Athleticsnation.com, you are a straight shooter. So here's the question:

Who could POSSIBLY be more deserving of Comeback Player of the Year than Mark Ellis?

After a PROBABLY career ending injury, not only making it back, but making the impact that he has been.....

It amazing that he's even playing ball, let alone being the player that he is.

Anyhow, seems like that's a story that NEEDS to be written.

Cheers!

Five Home Runs in one week?
That's pretty hard to ignore.  5 HR and 9RBI (I think) in the last week?  Last week's AL PoW was Victor Martinez, who had 3 HR and 6 RBI.  It's not always a big name player like Manny or Pujols.

by KEVINfromCV on Aug 29, 2005 4:22 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

victor martinez IS a big name player
at about the justin morneau "everyone expected a huge year from him and he didn't come through" level...

More so than Mark Ellis, anyway
"Victor Martinez" = 14 letters / 30 Scrabble points

"Mark Ellis" = 9 letters / 15 Scrabble points

Not if you play it
with the "m" on a corner triple word score, so that the "k" falls on a double letter and the "i" on another triple word for a grand total of 180 points.

Thats the kind of week he's been having.

What impresses me the most
is that all his homers are off different pitchers.  He doesn't have to rely on Jorge Julio to serve up most of his home runs, like so many other hitters do.

Yeah
There's a lot of conversations that KC has had with Mr. Beane that they'd like to take back.

always gonna like ellis..
he seems like a great guy. so much determination in the offseason, and now its all paying off. he defines "comeback player of the year". what the hell did giambi come back from? a non-juiced bicep? gimme a break.

Some reporter needs to ask him what went wrong that day!

by Larry E on Aug 29, 2005 7:21 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

my favorite part
is that he's not trying to hit homeruns. It's not like he's one of those guys where you expect him to hit one every time he's up, he's just trying to get the ball in play and get a hit and help the team out. It makes it that much sweeter when it does go over the wall. Hopefully it will continue! :)

Man.
It doesn't feel like a game anymore without an Ellis HR! The 26th? Nah, that wasn't a game. Just a bunch of guys standing out on a field, wearing gloves. Now, the 27th, that was a REAL game.

Man. Ellis must be sad to have to leave Baltimore. 'Player of the Week' does not fully describe his awesomeness.

After what he went through last year, it makes my heart hurt with joy to think about how much he deserves this.

Is Ken Macha listening?
Will Mark Ellis be moved up in the order permanently?

by boilerdan on Aug 30, 2005 6:56 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe, maybe not.
A strange observation -- each of the recent five HRs has been hit with Mark Ellis in a different spot in the batting order. So maybe Ellis will continue to move until he's got a HR batting in each spot in the lineup.
