Off topic: Any San Jose Shark fans up in here?
I realize this has a very high % of getting deleted but with hockey season almost only a month away I thought I'd ask if any ANers were also Sharks fans (or just hockey fans in general)?
If there are in fact other Shark fans, what do you think of the Sharks moves or lack there of? I like the idea of saving money to go after younger guys down the road and keeping the corps in tact, but at the same time they seem to be too passive.
For instance today two things happened: 1) Alexander Korolyuk basically become a free agent 2) The Calgary Flames traded Toni Lydman to the Buffalo Sabres for a 3rd round draft choice.
While I was never the biggest Korolyuk fan (way too inconsistant with goals), he had the speed and toughness to play on the penalty kill and seemed to come up big in big games--see the 2004 playoffs.
Now the next move, Lydman to Buffalo has nothing to do with San Jose or does it? Earlier this summer the Sharks elected to let Mike Rathje go-definitly the right move (older, slow footed defensman will struggle in the new NHL despite what that genius Bobby Clarke says :-/). However, in doing so they created an opening in their top 4 defensman. Now unless Ehrhoff or Preising can fill the void (perhaps they can), the Sharks have done nothing to fill that hole. Lydman moves the puck very well and skates very well something the Sharks seem to value in their defensman. In addition, Buffalo gave only a 3rd round pick. SJ easily could have acquired him had they wanted to, but again stood pat. I understand building from within the organization, shit I'm an A's fan, but the lack of any moves to bolster this term is rather puzzling.
We'll see how the team with the quietest--nota bene: quiet does not mean bad--offseason in the NHL does.
Sharks Off-season rating: B-. Locking up Sturm, Stuart, and Marleau were clearly great moves. Not wasting money on stars past their prime aka Paul Kariya, great move. Failure to obtain a cheap 15-20 goal scorer or 2nd line center, not good. Failure to obtain a fleet footed defensman (Lydman) who would be the ideal 4th defensman, not good.
Go Sharks 05-06.

sharks talk
I was really hoping the sharks would get Niedermeyer, I was pumped. Rathje, good riddance, looks like I have to find a new scapegoate and whipping boy. I cant believe how much money philly threw at him. Koryluk is such a headcase, hes kind of a hotdog too, No D. Im over these "superstars" such as Teemu. Sturm and Cheechoo are guys im excited to see. The sharks should still be good considering that they were essentially what the NHL is geared for now. A bunch of young speedsters who can put the puck in the net. Combine that with Nabokov in goal and they should easily make the playoffs. Im concerned with you about the defense, although I think that Ehrhoff is gonna be pretty good.
If you ever run across a good sharks blog (Blez, any room for hockey on SportsBlogs?) make sure to post it for us diehards.
I'll be there for sure opening night. See you at the Tank.
Sharks fan
I never cared much for hockey, but
I really felt for all the hockey fans during the lockout because I can't imagine my two favorite sports (baseball and basketball) being taken away from me for an entire season!
GOOOO SHARKS!!!
I feel the same way...
I kinda lost touch with hockey for a few years, but the lockout last year made me realize how much I enjoy the sport. I still root for the Sharks (home team) but follow the Maple Leafs as well (Owen Nolan).
Sory but as a Bruins fan...
Nolan
Speaking of Nolan, Sharks should sig his ass.

I Love Hockey
Phoenix-New coach, inconsistant goaltending, alot of the team is either old or young, few players in thier "prime"
Dallas-Still has talent but Modano needs to rebound and big questions on Defense, Turco will have to carry them
LA-Great offense, average at best defense, goaltending is a ?, but Garon was great in AHL.
Anahiem-Is Giggy a fluke? Can Fedorov stay healthy? What does Selanne have left? I love thier defense however, good mix of size and agility which will be important.
SJ- Good defense and good goaltending are obvious pluses, but don't see alot of scorers.
I see the division like this
1) LA
2)SJ
3)Phoenix
4)Dallas
5)Anahiem (Giggy's a fluke)
Huge Sharks fan
Oh, and I think the Sharks should move to Oakland.
My wife and I are both Sharks fans
Don't want to advertise but,

Its much better than the ESPB boards, no trolls, and little flaming.
I'm have the same username here and there.
Also it'd be good to have a Sharks fan
Hockey fan.
I went to the "The State of the Sharks" night, or whatever they called it, usually for season ticket holders, but, because of the strike, open to the public this year. Nabokov, Mark Smith, the Wilsons, Greg Jamison, and the chief scout took questions from the maybe 2000 fans in attendance.
Many of the questions related to the new rules. Consensus is that, for the first month of the season, there'll be a lot of penalties called as players get used to the system.
Doug Wilson said that, although they don't talk about players they've tried to sign, they did make a big pitch to sign Scott Niedermayer because of his character (well known to Blez) and because he fit the Sharks style of play. He was impressed with the Sharks and, had it not been for the opportunity to play with his brother, he'd probably have signed. Doug Wilson said the Sharks would be the fastest team in the league. He also said their minor league system is strong and that he's probably gotten more calls than any other GM about players in the system that the Sharks would be willing to part with.
That said, I do think there is a hole to be filled on defense. We do have three top defensemen in McLaren, Stuart and Hannan, but there may be a drop-off from there. Preissing was steady, as was Rob Davison, Ehrhoff was not, Jim Fahey seemed overmatched when he played. The latter two do, however, provide some offense. I'm interested in seeing what the rules changes will do to handicap defensemen.
With Rathje gone (I, for one, am not disappointed) and Koryluk in Russia, the team does have money available. They're the only team that hasn't picked up anyone. With a few older stars still out there, it'd be interesting to see if any of them come our way.
I think Al MacInnes will retire because of his eye injury, but wouldn't he be a great addition? I'd like to see the team sign Mark Messier for his grit and leadership. I will, however, miss Mike Ricci. To me, he was the heart of the team.
