Fantasy Baseball

Please use this diary for general fantasy discussion. Usually I would not post such a diary, but it's an off day. Let's talk fantasy.

I have a problem. I have this keeper league. The format is stupid if you ask me, but without going into the details I have to keep 2 pitchers out of the following:

Harden (as if..)
Bonderman
Z. Duke
F. Hernandez (Sea. phenom)
Schilling

Out of these I have to keep 2 and one will be Harden. Who is the other?

I have to keep two sluggers as well. My choices...

Sheffield
Manny
M. Young
Abreu
Maggs Ordonez

I am definitely keeping Abreu. I can't decide on the other. Probably not Mags because he's injury prone. I'm leaning towards Manny but Young would be nice to have at SS next year. What do you think people?

hmm...
I say keep Young  since his numbers could improve and a SS that hits is harder to find than an OF Slugger. As for the pitcher, I'd keep Boderman, I don't trust phenoms and Bonderman has improved.
No, I do not want to FIRE MACHA NOW, nor do I think Blanton is fat. Now leave me alone.

that is the word
I've been getting on Bonderman, it is just soooo tempting to take one of these kids. But I'm thinking that I can get them in the draft because I'm not playing with ANer types..you know?

I just had an idea
keep Felix...and trade him for a king's ransom. You could probably get 1 or to good-great players if someone is suckered into the hype.

it is so risky though.
if he hits the ground running in 06 then he'll have value, but if he faulters at all he'll be junk very quickly.

Just a thought
because I think he has already accumulated alot of value in the eyes of some, but I don't know the kind of baseball fans you have in your league, I'm planning on doing next year since I play with a kid that worships Joe Morgan (he's in last)

Let's get Morgan to do a fantasy league with
All-Star ANers.

Blez
Nico
Alien
Oaktoon
etc
etc..
Morgan

He might actually do ok because while I think $ball is good in trading strategy it doesn't translate into fantasy player catagories.

Rbi's anyone?

not in my league
stolen bases are worth half as much as walks and RBI isn't even a point collecting stat.Nor Wins for pitchers. WHIP is worth more than ERA as well.

Thats how
I learned everything I know about other teams.  Fantasy baseball.  Its pretty cool cuz when other players get traded to the A's then you know what they're bringing.  You know about them if you didn't know before.  Jay paywho?

You also know what players to fear other than the big name ones when playing them.  Like, oh crap, this guy's on a hot streak, I just picked him up.  That kinda stuff.

I would love an AN fantasy league.  Lets do it!  We have so many people we might have to have multiple leagues.  Who's going to manage it?

Need more info
What kind of roster do you field? Do you only play a SS and a 2B or do you also need a MI? How many OFers? Do you draft or auction?

by grover on Aug 22, 2005 8:00 PM PDT reply actions

roster
one of each normal position (3 OFers of course) and one DH. it is draft.

by capper3 on Aug 22, 2005 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Unless you're playing with a bunch of A's fans
I'd let Harden go. Keep Bonderman and Hernandez and look to take Harden in the first 5 rounds. Duke (being a Pirate) should be available late. Hernandez may be over-hyped and give you more trade leverage.

For the hitters, Abreu is going in the 1st round for sure. Keep him, but I'd consider holding on to Sheff as well. Mags is too big an injury risk, but Young will last a few rounds and I'd rather grab Tejada if the opportunity came my way.

To be blunt
Sheff is an ass but he comes to play. Manny...? He's a headache I have no interest in.

by grover on Aug 22, 2005 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Manny comes to play
just only at the plate, but thats all that matters in fantasy baseball. Manny is also 4 years younger.

Gamble
Bonderman would be the safe pick but I'd gamble and grab either Hernandez or Duke. You have to take Micheal Young, the others are injury prone and aging.
Don't count us out in '05.

Well
I don't know anything at all about fantasy baseball. So my opinions should be taken very lightly:

Keep:

Harden
Z. Duke

Keep:

Abreu
Manny

Those would be my choices too.
I'd take a gamble on Duke. If he keeps chugging along at his current rate, you'll look like a genius. If not, at least you'll still have a decent pitcher. Schilling is having one hell of a year, but as far as long-term keepers go, Harden and Duke should be the obvious choices.

How would someone go about getting involved with fantasy baseball, anyway? I'm interested for next season but have no idea how it works.

P.S. Melody, I heard a rumor you have pictures of Rich's (hot) cousin? :P

Fantasy
Couple options. Stick around AN during the spring and 3-5 leagues will pop up from the local crowd.

Or go to Yahoo and randomly join one of their leagues when that time of year roles around.

Thanks
Hopefully I can join one from around here in the Spring. :)

Fantasy baseball rocks
But don't join a random league because it's pointless. Other people won't care, and soon you're not going to either. It's only fun when other people keep up with their teams as well - every day, you have to change the pitching roster around to make sure that the right guys are starting. Some people get all hardcore and refuse to start certain players because they have bad career numbers against so-and-so pitcher, since it drags down your offensive stats and stuff. If you get into it, it all makes sense. I'm in a league with 11 other friends and it's great; despite being called "weak" and drafting my favorite players, my team has remained in the top three in rankings. It's great for bragging rights!

Well I have a picture of his (hot) cousin but he's wearing sunglasses and a cap. Also it was shot from about 200 feet away, he knew I was taking pictures of him and I felt like paparazzi - in a bad way. Do you have e-mail or AIM or something? Or I could just post a link but I don't want to hijack this thread for our own guilty pleasures.

Ah
I didn't realize their were personal leagues. I am such a dork! I really don't know anything about how it works. Hopefully I can find a good one to join next season, though. I'll keep an eye out for more info when the time comes. Thanks. :) I will probably make the same "weak" move! Be hard not to.

So the rumors are true! The real question is: is he actually hot? :P Aww, I'm sure he didn't mind! He probably felt special. I do have email and AIM but I'm reluctant to give them out here. :(

Okay, nevermind, I just made an email to use here on AN:

Keeper Leagues
What are normal keeper league formats?

I think that the best way to do it would be to keep your entire roster every year. The only way players would change rosters would be through trades, waiver wire drops/pickups, and maybe some sort of FA system. I'm not sure.

"Don't you play the flute, Huddy?"

by capper3 on Aug 22, 2005 8:19 PM PDT reply actions

I've seen very few formats like you've suggested
Most keeper league's I know of let you keep anywhere from 2-5 players, the positional thing you've got going is new to me.

by grover on Aug 22, 2005 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions

i'm in a footbal keeper league
been doing it for four years.

we keep four players each year.  this year i kept manning, james, harrison, j. jones.  very indy heavy which is bad, but obviously i had to do it.

i think keeping all would be a little silly, why even bother drafting at that point?  such a league would probably get boring.

by the way, i'd keep harden and bonderman, plus abreu and manny.  but keep an eye on duke and felix until the last possible moment.

when do you have to decide by?

by xbhaskarx on Aug 22, 2005 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Capper: I play in a bunch of $$ leagues
so I think I can help.

I think it's pretty easy assuming their arent any salaries involved that may affect a salary cap.

Pitchers:

Harden is a slam dunk of the group.  I think the second is very tough and comes down to Bondy or Felix.  Bondy is the safer bet, but I dont think the upside is there.  Hernandez is the risky pick with huge upside...I would want to see how he finishes out this year...if he keeps this up, he is your guy.

Batters:

I think this one is straight forward.  I am a huge MY fan and the SS eligibility is nice, but I think you have to go Abreu and Man Ram.  Manny's pure numbers are just sick.....You can lock up those 2 in the OF and go early for a SS and not worry about OF for a while.  Manny is just about guaranteed .300-35-120.....Dont let that go back in the draft.

Just my $.02.
