Were you there? Or: Notable Quotables

45,000 people in the Coliseum totally, as they say colloquially, "rocked my body" last night. This despite the fact that I am somewhat partial to smaller crowds where neither the beer nor my bladder control runs out before I get to the front of the line.

The crowd was amusing though, I have to give them credit. From the closet (read: no gear, all fear) Angels fan in front of me who only showed his colors after they scored (I gave his seven year old daughter one of my playoff pompoms which she raucously used to cheer for the A's the rest of the night--hah!) to this gem that I heard in line:

Man #1, looking at close up of Duke pitching in the 7th: Is that Durazo?

Man #2, confidently: No, he's not pitching today.

It was an all around almost surreal experience for us fans used to quiet cold nights. What did you see or hear?

Ready?

DISH!

The best wave I've ever seen
It just don't look the same when there are 12,000 people in the stands.
I sipped the Kool-Aid, and it tastes gooooooooood!!!

The Wave Is For Fans Who Don't Watch The Game
I believe it was 2-1 when that nonsense started.  A key point in a huge series and people are doing the wave.

Things like that just keep Boston and NY and Chicago fans laughing at fans in  the West coast.

The A's used to have a "no wave" sign on the jumbo-tron years ago when people would do that.  I'd like to see it come back.

To the fans who like that and do that during a great game like last night I say "Watch the damn game!"

~This is a simple game...You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball. YOU GOT IT!?!

Nonsense.
I watch the game.  I participated.  'Nuff said.

Respect the wave
I took two kids, ages 12 and 9, from my church to Wednesday's game.  They had never been to a baseball game before, and they certainly don't watch at home.

On the ride home, when my brother and I asked them what they liked about the game, they mentioned the wave.  They also mentioned the homers, Vlad's sliding catch, the churros, the cheering, etc.

It becomes one of those many things that kids enjoy about going to baseball games.  No harm in that!

I really hate the wave
People weren't even watching the game.  Just waiting to see when that stupid wave was going to come back around.

Rule #1 of the Wave...
It is only to be done when your team is up by 10 or more runs...Agreed?

agreed
When you team is up by that many runs, no matter how hard you try, you really can't pay attention to the game.

I was at the game on Tuesday
Some fans tried to start the wave.  Everyone in the LF bleachers just kind of looked over and dismissed.  Bleachers need to take controll.  If the other fans want to do the wave, it will be hard with the bleachers doing nothing.

friday viewing of angel fan
in section 129 there was a guy with an erstad shirt and each one of his family had their own angel's player shirt.  When vlad hit his grand slam i looked over and he wasn't even clapping or even standing up.  didn't even looked pleased, I just thought that was real strange.

fraud!
maybe someone over at halo heaven paid a homeless family to show up in order to underpin their "more of us then them at the game" claim.

I brought a friend to her first game
During the first inning, after Ellis got a hit and Crosby walked, she looked down and was like, "How does that work? How can you have two people on one base?"

To give her some credit though, she saw Fischer and Crosby both standing on first base and assumed they were both players. Oh, and later on she was taking pictures of Zito... She got one of him bending over with his ass facing our way - and then said, "I wish he would turn around."

Tsk. Newbie.
"I wish he'd turn around." Well, she'll learn in time, I imagine.

oh my freaking ears
my bladder control runs out before I get to the front of the line

Too much information, dude!

I don't know how a casual fan can keep track of the team. Here's a non-scientific test. Here's last year's opening day lineup.

Kotsay cf
Kielty lf
Chavez 3b
Dye rf
Durazo dh
Karros 1b
Crosby ss
Miller c
  McMillon ph
  Byrnes ph
  Melhuse c
Scutaro 2b
Hudson p
  Hammond p
  Bradford p
  Rhodes p

Only 5 of 10 are still on the team and only 1 of the 6 relievers and pinchhitters are here. But those Ney Guys are doing pretty well, huh?

by Apricot on Aug 11, 2005 8:52 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

hey
even I get confused sometimes. Well. Not really. But when I was first a fan I did all the time.

I think what really cracked me up about what I heard was the second guy's firm assertion that Durazo wasn't pitching that day. No "Wait, doesn't Durazo hit?" or "I don't know." Just a simple, unwavering, "No, he's not pitching today."

Classic.

I saw about 6 dudes get arrested
Didn't see why....fight, I'm sure. Also, had a British family behind me nd they were teaching their daughter the very basics of baseball, like what is a double and stuff like that. At one point, her brother yelled "In your face, Erstad" and she said "What does that mean"? That was funny.
I'll try not to swear.

Oh, and that same British dude
The Dad, went to wait in one of those 3 hr lines for beer and dogs, didn't want to wait for condiments afterwards and came back to the seat carrying an industrial size container of ketchup that he took out of the dispenser. That was pretty good.
I'll try not to swear.

Not At The Game, ON BART from SF to the Coliseum
A group of bullet headed Orange County boys and girls (early 20's) who did nothing but make really rude and ugly remarks about Oakland and the A's all the way to the ballpark.  All while on a train not only full of A's fans, but people going home to the place they loudly called a dump over and over again.

Out of the tunnel into West Oakland:

"Oh my God, how ugly!!! THIS is Oakland?"
"What a dump!"
"Well what do you expect, it's where the A's play"

On and on it went from there.

Yeah, there's nowhere in L.A. that looks like that part of Oakland. Spare me.

Before anyone tries to defend this stuff with "well that part of Oakland does look bad etc..." let me say this:

When you go into someone's house and it's not looking too nice, you don't open your mouth and talk a lot of b.s.  You smile and take a seat.  But these yahoos wouldn't have known class from a hole in their heads.

I'm sure they enjoyed the game last night too.  Because, as no nothing Angels fans, they undoubtedly left in the 4th or 5th inning.

Well you know
we really have to start cloaking those mega cargo cranes in Gucci and Prada in order to gussie up our image.

The Oakland Post Office should be revamped to look like that Los Angeles Symphony Gehry monstrosity.

That should help too.

Idiots.

Here's one:
When Chavy Lolligagged off of 2nd and did not tag an a deep fly to the OF with the OFer running away from the field I was yelled, "Man, why didn't you tag"

A friend of mine responded with, "Because you never make the third out at third base"

I said, "But, that was a layup, and he could score on a wild pitch and it changes the way the pitcher pitches, more fastballs, less stuff in the dirt!"

To which he replied, "I'm not worried about him not scoring on a wild pitch"

Two innings later...There it was...Shileds to the screen...4-2 A's!!!

9th inning
Some people started to leave, maybe to not catch traffic, Street came in and our friend from Boston asked 'why is everybody leaving', then our other friend said 'half these people are on the bandwagon, there are only like 20,000 real fans here'.
