Asshole time on AN

To avoid getting lost in the 266 comments from Saturday's game thread, I'm posting a diary on the subject of Chris Shelton.

I was extremely offended by the comparison Blez made between Chris Shelton and Sloth from The Goonies. And before some of you start thinking I'm a tight ass, I assure you that I'm not. I sometimes come to AN to read about baseball, not to read hateful (different from just 'you suck') comments from the person in charge of the site.

That same person in charge deletes posts that say "The A's suck". While we can't say the A's suck, I guess it's OK to make hateful comments about a ball player as well as make a joke about a disfigurement.

I know there are some who felt the same way.

This is the natural outgrowth of talking about Bobby Crosby's ass. It's not just for men-lovers anymore!

I think Freud says we've moved out of our oral stage and are currently in an anal stage. I don't even want to see what the phallic stage is going to look like.

Chill Out Dude
If this were the Chris Shelton fan club you'd have a point but it's the Oakland A's website run by a guy who puts a hell of a lot more time into it than anyone else (from which many of us benefit.)

It's his site - if he wants to trash Mother Teresa he can do it. Your choice (yes, it's still a free country) is to figure out whether you want to continue to visit AN or remove it from your browser destinations.

Otherwise, your opinion has been graciously noted and we can all move on to trashing the detestable Twinkies (with apologies to those who are sensitive to rude comments directed at cheap pastries.)

Saintbermetrics
Agreed. After Mo-T's peak career year at age 27 (when she opened 16 orphanages, cured 67 of 71 lepers by laying on of hands, converted 171 of 172 saves (of heathens -- although the heathen-save rule, much like its MLB counterpart, is a highly overrated counting stat that ignores the crucial role of the lay ministry and the community in saving heathens from the fires of eterenal damnation), and prevented the deaths of over 1.5 million spermatozoa, she became a free agent and was subject to an intense bidding war among the major religions. (Of course, saintbermetric analyst Chris Hitchens has argued that many of these counting stats are not only irrelevant, but possibly artifically inflated.)

Surprisingly enough, Zoroastrianism, under new ownership committed to spending money to win (converts) came in as a late underdog bidder and had a verbal agreement with Mo-T for a 25-year contract (with a prayer option for 2 aeons in the afterlife). Other high bids included offers from Scientology, Wicca, and a surprising but potentially lucrative incentive-laden contract offer from Madeleine Murray O'Hair.

But the Roman Catholic Church of Rome (yes, they changed their name to a geographical redundancy, too; perhaps where Arte Moreno got the idea) came back with an offer that included Mo-T's requested no-trade deal (re-renouncing indulgences) and she re-upped with the RC. Of course, after that, her performance metrics decreased dramatically, and the RC ended up paying for past performance. Mo-T ended up spending much of her later years on the DL, and whispers of performance-enhancing substance abuse (consecrated-wafer overdoses, high-altitude holy-water injections) dogged her til the end of her career.

Folks
Since day one on this site, I've mocked opposition players, including comparing David Ortiz to Grimace, Bartolo Colon to Shrek and John Lackey to Billy Bob in Slingblade.  I even made the comparison of our own Bobby Kielty to Syndrome and Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal.

I also compared Shelton to Alfred E. Newman.  These are fictional characters and I'm just having fun poking fun at our opponents.  I doubt Shelton will ever know that anyone ever compared him to Sloth or Alfred E. Newman.  I saw Shelton a while ago and the first thought I had was, "That dude looks just like Sloth or Alfred E."

I'm sorry you took offense to it, but it's not like Shelton is on the site.  Although knowing sports locker rooms, I imagine some of his teammates may have already made the connection and call him Alfred or even sloth.

There's a big difference between calling people idiots on the site who will most definitely read it and making a look-a-like comparison.  I'm  still not entirely clear how it's a joke about disfigurement?

And the only times I've deleted posts that say the A's suck is when people say it over and over without anything to back up their argument.

maybe blez loves the sloth, and has love in his heart for mr. shelton.  who knows for sure what blez's intentions were?
but why not assume that it was made in a lighthearted way -- oh, here's a kind of funny photo of shelton, i'll make a ridiculous comparison to a sloth to make people chuckle.  do we not owe blez the benefit of the doubt, and recognize that if you write a blog almost daily, you will write some things that perhaps you shouldn't, or that will be misinterpreted.

besides, how was blez to know that mr. shelton's mom reads his blog?  i ask that question in a lighthearted un-hateful way, and add that mr. shelton is a fine strapping young man, who would look good if only he was dressed in a more green and gold uniform.

What's up??
with the sudden burst of overly critical posters on AN?  Its making me very sad.  I also notice, the wave of people that comes in with their subtlely insulting contributions are not regulars.  It seems with winning comes new members, and with a bigger site comes more critics.  As a result, those who come to just have fun like we do in real life are scared that they might be made to look like an idiot by some other ass just because they made a statement like "Man, I wish we had Manny on our team.  Beane should get him".  I don't want that person to stop posting but with these kind of people they will stop.

So what if one of the AN girl says Huston's ass should be casted and molded?  So what if someone has some remark about flip-flops and politics?  So what if someone makes a comment that is not true but you would only know its not true if you spent the 5 hours to research the truth?  A lot of people don't have the time to visit baseball prospectus or pour over baseball excel sheets.

I believe that a lot of people are letting the anonymity  of online forum posting let them turn our fair community into an arena of bitter baseball snobs bantering about statistics.  I know none of those people would act so aggressively eye to eye.  Theres just something about physical presence that allows people to be more courteous.  So what I am asking all those people who said "that trade is ridiculous, have you even been watching??" and "Um...no.  That makes no sense." to just pretend you are saying those things to a fellow A's fan at a local pub...and just be nicer.

I have tired of other forums for this very exact reason and its pissing me off that these baseball snobs come in thinking they are contributing by putting others down with their higher baseball intellect.  So please stop.  Its stupid.

AN had more traffic in July
than ever before.  Over 300,000 visitors over the month.

With immense growth comes growing pains I suppose...but sometimes it makes me long for the old days when I didn't get 50 emails a day complaining about this person or telling me how to make the site better or telling me I was an insensitive buffoon.

I just wanted a site where A's fans could just gather and talk about the team and have fun.

You illlustrate
my point pretty well.

I'm not saying I'm holier than thou or anyone else, I was just saying a lot of the posters I've noticed that does the aforementioned, I do not recognize their screen names - not that I have been around for very long but I hang around on gameday threads, and read the diaries enough to know who are regulars and who aren't.  I don't care if they're poster #30 or #377, if the only thing they do is come in to the bar every time the bandwagon is high to make others uncomfortable, then thats not right.  Its not when they joined, its how often they come. And once again, its not ONLY these non-regulars that do this, some regulars just aren't very friendly as well.

And ColoradoFan, thx, and no I did not just roam the site for a year before joining.  I joined practically on the day I found the page - I was just looking for other obsessed fans that could get into the spirit as much as I could.  My friends are fans but just aren't addicted enough.

please ask about the status of Durazo and Dotel, do we lose them without any picks?  For sure we can't offer arbitration, are they just total free agents?  NOt sure anyone would want them but sure do like draft picks.

by china bob on Aug 1, 2005 1:48 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Easy answer
They will become free agents and we will get no compensation, the leauge is not going to take pity on us and change the rules so we get some draft picks.  We may be able to sign them real cheap, but there could also be a small bidding war.

Although we do have exclusive negotiating rights up until a certain date so we may want to try to sign them cheap before the offseason.  I can see Octavio sticking to his word and playing for "free" meaning signing a minimum salary contract.
Ruby on the other hand would be wise to sign with a team in a hitter's park to build his stats up and then cash in on a multi-year deal.

Dead giveaways:
  1. "In my humble opinion" (always followed by an arrogant opinion)
  2. "Now no one likes a good laugh more than I do, but..." (always followed by complaint showing that everyone likes a good laugh more)
  3. "I'm no prude, but..." (always followed by complaint proving prudishness)
  4. "I'm not a tight-ass, but..." (always followed by complaint proving tightness of ass)
First of all, blee, your comment using the word "disfigurement" is the most offensive of all. We are not disfigured; we are "differently figured". I say "we" because I have 3 nipples, a 1" long nose, and a penis the size of a five-year old (don't feel sorry for me--it's about 2'4").

Blez' analogy was far from insulting. It suggested that even if you have teeth in odd places or a relief map for a face, you too could lead the league in hitting in July. And that's inspirational for all of us who have more nipples than ears.
