An Honest Question

Inspired by a raging argument over steroid monkeys in another thread....

Independent of any rule (i.e., imagine if MLB was still not prohibiting 'roids....)

Is having laser eye surgery any different than using anabolic steroids?

Both use science to make the body artifically better. Both put people who don't use the technology at a disadvantage. Both are shortcuts. Both point to a future where "clean" people can't compete. Both threaten to make records from previous eras virtually meaningless.

Personally, I think this is one of those cases where technology is outracing ethics, that the history of humanity shows that cheaters/innovators are always one step ahead, and that it doesn't matter what we think about this kind of thing, since it's inevitable. But I'm curious as to what the Nation thinks.
