Latest A's movement news.
According to ESPN, these are the latest A's movement news....
Yanks keeping tabs
<Jul. 2> Center fielder Mark Kotsay met with A's GM Billy Beane on Friday to discuss the possibility of a two-year contract extension and said "things are going in the right direction," the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "There's no rush and there's not a lot to say," said Kotsay, who wants roughly the same money he's currently earning ($7.025 million and a player option for 2006 at $7.05 million), along with a no-trade clause. The A's have rejected the no-trade clause, but could agree on a limited no-trade provision.
If an agreement can't be reached, the A's might trade Kotsay. According to the Journal News, the Yankees are monitoring the negotiations and have two scouts following the A's. Newsday reported that Beane recently spoke with Yankees GM Brian Cashman, but New York balked at Oakland's asking price for Kotsay - second baseman Robinson Cano and two former first-round picks, Class A right-hander Philip Hughes and Double-A third baseman Eric Duncan.
<Jun. 27> Peter Gammons reports that Billy Beane continues to tell teams he won't trade Zito during the season.
"Sometimes people don't believe me when I tell them I'm not trading Zito," Beane said.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, some inside the Phillies organization think that could change. If Zito is put on the trading block, Philly figures to make a bid for the left-hander with top prospect Ryan Howard being the centerpiece of any potential deal.
So basically nothing more than we already know.

too many
i know his pain.
i no longer listen to the trade talks. i'll pay attention to them after they happen. that being said, i think beane realizes kotsay's importance as a team leader. that hole can't be filled with stats or prospects.

Agreed.
As Tom Petty said, "Most things I worry about never happen anyway."

Why Cano?
No way is Cano a significant upgrade over the half dozen options the A's already have, and why waste trade capital on a marginal upgrade? You'd have thought Beane would have learned about trading for marginal players in the Hudson deal.
