Battle wounds..

I have become a casualty of a good time...

Yesterday evening at the A's Game, and what a wonderful game it was, I happened to be at the tail end of a line drive foul ball... here is the story... Dan Johnson was up to bat in the 3rd inning and cracked a line drive foul up into the rows just above the A's dugout.  I had just finished telling the kids I was with, that they really needed to pay attention to the game down here because where we were sitting is definitely foul ball territory.  As I saw the swing, heard the crack of the bat, and immediately saw a whitish object hurling toward me, all I could think of was, OH S..T! it is going to hit one of the kids so I did the only thing I could do, which was stick my hand out and try to deflect the ball if not catch it... Well let me tell you, it smacked my hand so hard that it tore the nail right out of my middle finger... and to answer some of you out there.... Yes they are long and Yes the whole thing came off!!  I had to have the damaged nail bed removed this morning...Yuck!!!   Now I have this huge gauze wrapped middle finger flipping everyone off!!!

So long story short... does anyone else have any foul ball battle wounds they want to share?????

All in all it was such a good game I really don't care about the finger......

Let's Go A's!!!!!

It seems like...
foul balls are the polar opposite of me. Whenever one comes close, it always veers in some direction in order to uphold the laws of physics. I guess it's a blessing in that I've never been damaged, but a curse in that I've never caught one.

First there was "The TAG"
Then there was "The Deflection"
What a year for A's fans.

P.S. Did you at least get the ball?

Now THIS is Billy Ball

"the ball"
Hmmmm...funny you should ask.... the gentleman or should I say schmuck next to me reached behind me and snagged it..easy as pie, after I "deflected" it. :-)  Then for the rest of the game wouldn't acknowledge us for the rest of the game... Whatever!!!

That's foul
I ducked out of the way of a foul ball several years ago but it hit my shoulder and the guy sitting behind me caught it.  After I came back from the nurses station with an ice pack, he gave me the ball.

Sorry
Wilyc I didn't mean your comment was foul.  I was refering to guy who kept the ball.

everyone
that I have spoken to has said "what a jerk" for not giving us the ball... oh well...no biggie

i saw...
an 8 year old kid break his hand catching a foul ball last year...and he held onto it too.  he reached through the metal railing that splits the lower deck, and the momentum of the ball basically crushed his hand against the rail.  it just sounded awful.  but at least he's got a cool story to tell his friends...

Ouch!
My nail hurts just thinking about that :(

I have always feared foul balls because I'm really spacey and have bad luck. I must be one of the few who is always hoping one will NEVER come near me. I'm not interested in getting a ball, just want to sit there peacefully. I am always thankful if there are fans (or guys) by me with gloves to get them instead. I would totally be the person smacked in the face with one!

Near miss...
I used to sit in Sect 116 just below the overhang for the second deck.  With the net and the overhang, it takes a pretty freakish angle for foul balls to get back there.  Still, one game we did get one hit back to us.  I totally lost the ball as it came over the net but it looked like it was heading right for me.  I ducked fast and the guy sitting right behind me (who brought a glove to every game) made a perfect catch right about where my head would have been.  As far as I was concerned, he was more than welcome to the ball.  Scary.

DID they try to force you to sign release!!!
I love it when they do that. They tell you you are entering a contest but it is a medical release.
Classic.

Not advovating suing anybody over a game I jus thtink it is funny.

hahaha
they were all to happy to sign me up for a "contest"
but I never physically signed anything...

I saw in Cincinnat at the old Riverfront Stadium
they had stands a ways above the walls in the outfield, like the Vet and 3 Rivers Stadiums.  A guy was leaning down to grab a home run ball and fell over the railing at least 20 feet and landed behind the fence.  The right fielder went over and jumped to get to the top of the wall for a look.  The guy broke a leg.  It was pretty scary, though.
The face of a child can say it all, especially the mouth part of the face.

Wow that's horrible!
I had a tonnail removed once because of an infection, but I can't imagine how painful it would be for a nail to just come ripping off. OUCH!! I have a question: how did you manage to stay until the end of the game?

Also, that whole 'contest' thing is really lame... But I think just by entering the coliseum, they're not liable for what happens because of the disclaimer on your ticket.

On the bright side, the nail will grow back eventually. But you'll be stuck with a smart looking scab until playoffs or so ;)

toenail story
Once, when I was running cross country in college, I had a toenail fall off during a race.

It was a meet very late in the season, late november, and it was raining a lot.  The course actually had standing water on it in places because of the amount of rain.  I decided to use track spikes instead of my cross country spikes for the race as I could get longer spikes into the shoes.  Well, I hadn't used these shoes in awhile and they had shrunk a little bit.  Part way through the race I feel a pop around my right big toe.  I didn't really slow down because it didn't hurt that much.

After the race I went to the training room because it hurt a bit and there was blood all over my sock.  Once there it was discovered that my right big toe had basically come off at the root (due to rubbing with teh end of the shoe) and was floating around in my sock cutting my foot.  The trainers cleaned me up (who says athletic training is not a glamour job!) and sent me on my way.  Out of morbid curiosity I kept the toenail.  When I got home I took a nap, which was common after races, and when I woke up I could not find the toenail.

Months later, I am moving a couch in my apartment with a football player friend of mine helping out.  The toenail makes an appearance and my 300 pound friend is deathly afraid of it.

The point is,
Don't lose that nail......

Why does everyone keep their nail?
That's really funny, because I tried keeping my dead toenail too... Gosh was that thing nasty! I tried to wash it and instead I dropped it down the sink. I was MOST disappointed :(

Could you still run with no big toenail? Wouldn't that hurt even more, with the end of your toe rubbing up against your shoes? Then again, you're an athlete I guess you know how to suck it up and live with the pain ;)

I'm not sure how I managed
to stay until the end of the game... I just didnt want the kids to freak out that I got hurt, so we stayed and enjoyed the rest of the game... and also you the players are easy on the eyes so it really wasn't too bad...although when I went home you better believe I needed sympathy and something stronger than tylenol...hehehe

I don't think it can be a contract
Because when the guy next to me picked up a ball and gave it to a kid they had the kid fill out the paperwork and a 12 year old can't sign an enforceable contract.
